DERBYSHIRE REPORTS
by Adrian Duggins
It is with great personal sorrow that I report the death of my great friend William (Bill) Byard of Crich. Bill, who was in his eighties, was a real gentleman and the secretary of the very successful Crich HS right up until he passed away. He was also a very successful fancier. He loved the long distance races and was very successful, topping the NDSRF from Saintes over 500 miles; I remember him taking the first 4 places from Nantes, also topping the fed. Many years ago he loved racing on the north road. He had a fantastic red cock which topped the federation from the longest races on the north and when the club turned south the same bird won over the water from France. He will be sadly missed by all his friends and all who knew him; he was a true gentleman.
I was talking to Jeroen Meeder of the Leo Van Rijn & Jeroen Meeder partnership of the Netherlands and we were discussing how successful their fabulous pigeons are at the moment in England and Ireland. Whereever they go they win and win big. These fantastic pigeons descend from the Merckx line, the famous Oude Merkx of the Janssen Brothers. The second line is the Kadet from Karl Meulemans and the third line is based on the old Tournier strain, and more recently they have introduced the best from Jan Ouwerkerk with great success.
Leo and Jeroen are dedicated fanciers. The way they breed birds, they pair up nephew and neice and then cross them afterwards. By crossing the three golden lines this fantastic strain was developed and it is of exceptional class. They keep their pigeons in fantastic condition, only using natural products and they do not keep a lot of pigeons; next season they are racing only 25 couples. They compete with both cocks and hens every week and their pigeons have to fly from 70 miles through to 500 miles. The basket decides what birds are to stay. They are only happy with the very best, which ensures their success for these two dedicated fanciers.
In the last two seasons they themselves have been: 1st Middle distance champions, 1st Overall Ace Pigeon Champions, 4th Long distance champions, 4th Young bird champions. These are just some of the top competitions in the Massive Westland De Kuststrook. These are some of the prizes won against big birdage: 1st 2071 pigeons, 1st 4,492 pigeons. 1st, 2nd, 5th 4240 birds, 1st, 2nd, 2949 birds, 1st, 2nd, 5586 birds, 1st 4371 pigeons. National results: 1st NPO Ablis 4371 pigeons, 1st, 2nd, 5th Morlincourt 4240 birds, 4th Nanteul 5334 birds, 5th Nateil 6946 birds, 5th Tours 3277 birds, 1st 1608 birds, 4th National Sens 3862 birds, 8th National Sens 19432 birds, and many more prizes, too many to mention.
I myself race these fabulous Leo Van Rijn & Jeroen Meeder pigeons with great success, also B & K Hawes have had sensational results with their Leo Van Rijns. Since 2006 they have won 81 x 1st Feds, 9 x 1st Combines, 50-500 miles and 10 RPRA Awards. Another big winner and just started up again with Leo’s birds, is Phil Dunstall winning in only seven races with young birds 2011: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and many more top 20 positions, London & South East Classic Vire 1700 plus birds (Open); 9th NFC Fougeres 4776 birds (open), 1st 10 positions BB&O Fed Seaton 2366 birds; 27 fed positions in five races, racing in one of the strongest clubs in one of the strongest Federations in the south of England; nine birds in the top 20 of the L&SECC from Vire YB 2011. All clocked into a T3.
I also spoke to Lee Fribbins, Editor The Racing Pigeon and Pictorial, about his fabulous success with the small team of Leo Van Rijns & Jeroen Meeder he races. He describes these pigeon as the best he as ever had. They are consistent, honest, reliable and extremely hard working. He has won many firsts this season up to Combine level, only racing a very small team.
