NIPA & AROUND

EXCELLENT CLONMEL RACE

The NIPA, EDC and Ulster Federation decided due to unfavorable weather reports during this Bank Holiday May Day weekend that they would basket on Saturday instead of Friday for a possible liberation on Sunday. Fine and persistent drizzle and low lying mist was to cause problems for the liberating committees and as lunch time approached with none of the above liberated and with very little wind it was touch and go if the band of bad weather would pass to allow what we all knew was sitting behind, that being glorious sunshine, I would have to say it passed just on time as the East Down Combine liberated first of all in Clonmel at 1.45pm in a Light S/West wind with the NIPA following suit at 2.15pm both sets of birds clearing well, the Ulster federation where this week in Thurles and they opted to go at the same time as the East Down Combine in a South West Wind. As a scribe it’s a nightmare scenario, as it will require probably an all night job typing results to make sure the deadlines are met on a Monday morning, to be sure of reaching Thursday’s publication.

Highlight this week for myself was seeing the finished article, that being the Gibb & Byrne Stud Collection Catalogue that I worked on for a few weeks with Martin Kwakernaat of Holland who visited Northern Ireland to photograph and capture the sheer quality of the pigeons owned by Gibb and Byrne. The 16 page A4 Full Colour brochure is worth sending for, all you need to do is write to the Gibb & Byrne Stud, 6 Old Park Road, Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland BT28 3QT. Not for the reason that I worked on this myself but probably one of the best Stud Catalogues I have ever come across and without any doubt the best ever produced by a Stud in Ireland. Full credit to all involved. Take my advice get your order in for this free publication.

Had some post on Monday morning or afternoon or evening, my postman would make a bad liberator couldn’t set you watch by him to say the least, so all in all anything that arrives by post will be a week late in reaching the publications because I work during the night on a Sunday and most of the early hours on a Monday morning to ensure my column is sitting on the Editors desk when he arrives into work. But very nice to have contact even by post, fanciers making an effort to get their fellow club men some publicity can only be welcomed, first letter was from Patsy Rice with the results for the first three weeks for the Killyleagh & District HPS. Many Thanks Patsy and will have them included in Section F’s results listed below. Next it was a letter from ’The Wee Man’ as he signed it, have a photo, but it will require scanning so will have it published next week, anyway The Wee Man is writing on behalf of the Dundalk North End Flying Club and sent me a few photos of the clubs recently held presentation at Larry’s Bar in Dundalk, will have these published next week, also included was the Clubs result from Roscrea which will also be listed in the results section of this column.

Another weekend of weather problems delayed the local racing, the NIPA collections were deferred until Saturday and after many delays finally released in Clonmel County Tipperary at 2.15pm Sunday 4th May in a helping SW wind. It was all worth the bother and the Liberation team need congratulated on once again getting the race right, winning birds returned at a mile a minute in a great afternoon/early evening. It was the fourth race of the old bird season and yet again we have almost full returns.

Collections for Pilmore Beach next week are one hour earlier.

BASKETING DELAYED BY ONE DAY

The East Down Combine and Ulster Federation decided due to unfavourable weather reports during this Bank Holiday May Day weekend that they would basket on Saturday instead of Friday for a possible liberation on Sunday. Fine and persistent mizzle and low lying mist was to cause problems for the liberating committees and as lunch time approached with none of the above liberated and with very little wind it was touch and go if the band of bad weather would pass. As the afternoon approached 1.30pm the sun started to break through in the North of Ireland which is what the convoyers had been waiting patently in the South of Ireland for.The EDC and Ulster Fed liberated both at the same time but in two different areas of the country the East Down opting for Clonmel and the Ulster Federation went onto Thurles this week after two successful Kildares. As with hold overs and late basketing it has a way of effecting the quickness that we get the results in, so this weeks results round-up is somewhat smaller than usual as I send this to meet my deadline for copy.
