NIPA & AROUND

BY ADIE

DONNELLY BROS ENJOY THEIR DAY AT THE BEACH

A fantastic group photo of four 1st Club winners from Pilmore at the weekend, from (L) Richard Donnelly 1st Newry City, Owen Markey 1st Ballyholland HPS, Ron McKelvey 1st & 2nd Newry & District HPS and finally Malaghy & Mark Maguire 1st Millvale & Dist HPS.

The NIPA were at Pilmore Beach for the fifth race of the O/Bird programme. With a lot of apprehension during the week regarding if we were going to have a race or not due to the unfavourable weather reports that were available, the NIPA decided to go ahead knowing that had they not got the gap expected on Saturday morning they would have struggled to have the race from Pilmore before Tuesday.

Excellent move as the 25,000+  birds were liberated at 9.00am is a South Westerly wind changing to North Westerly the further the birds entered the North of Ireland. With the birds clearing very well and extremely high the secretary Fred Russell expected a fast race and he was right again with the probable winner this week being the Donnelly Brothers of Newry City who timed at 12.04pm flying 172 miles recording a velocity of 1645 a fantastic pigeon on the day.

I had a chat with Richard on Sunday evening and he told me that the pigeon in question is bred down from his successful family formed around their good pigeon that won the RPRA Selby Thomas Cup for the partnership. This week's provisional Open winner for the Donnellys is a Yearling Cheq Pied Cock racing on the Roundabout system. Four yards behind  on 1641 was the Ballyholland fancier Owen Markey who is having another fantastic season this his fourth win on the trot in the Ballyholland Club this season. Owen was telling me that the pigeon he timed a yearling Blue Widowhood Cock was never raced as a youngster and this is its third race so far, with a full brother of this cock finishing 5th Open in this race last year were the loft enjoyed 1st & 2nd  Section G. While focusing on the Newry area I consider it foolish not to contact Ron McKelvey who at times lights up the NIPA with his racing exploit’s a man never to be underestimated from any race , this week he keeps up his impressive start with the Newry & District HPS clocking two good arrivals to finish 1st & 2nd Club with the first pigeon  a 2 year old Brasspenning Blue Cheq Cock on Roundabout being the very Open winner from this race last year.

Back to my heartland of Section D the news this week is at last a Section win for D & M  Shimmons of the Glenavy & District HPS, David has been racing very well over the last few weeks and this makes it three Club wins on the trot previously finishing 3rd Section twice before finally nailing that top spot this week I must say after talking with David Senior during lunch time on Sunday he tells me that his son David is now the worker around the lofts and a lot of the recent success is down to his hard work and dedication. The racing success as far as the pigeons go are coming from Nelles De Pol pigeons obtained from Herbie Phillips about 7 years ago, and as David put it they are churning out winner after winner, I can recall last week in my column mentioning about the previous two club winners for the Shimmons also being Nelles De Pol. This weeks Section winner is a Natural Yearling Blue Hen flying to the perch timed at 12.35pm flying 195 miles. Next best was down to the Ashfield Club were the partnership of Jim Brown & Noel Burns had a flyer to win the Club doing Vel 1584, 3rd Section will be L Magee & Son Jack of the Lisburn & District HPS, funny thing is I was talking to Jack just a couple of days ago in Tesco’s and he told me he would be trying to give it a go this week, but was somewhat restricted due to working night shifts, these boys race a fantastic family of Busschaerts pigeons that have held their own in Lisburn area for many years and looking at this race last year the Magee’s also won the Club from Pilmore. In 4th spot is another loft going consistently well being that of the P & J Boal partnership they recorded a velocity of 1578 but topped the Dromore & District HPS with their second pigeon doing 1570 due to the first one being a trainer. The first pigeon timed is a half brother to ‘Noah 12’ which is a full brother to the pigeon that Michael Phearson won the Eastway HPS with a couple of weeks ago, the Club winner is pigeon named ’54’ he has been in the clock in every race this year and is a full brother to ‘Noah 96’. When out and about you always run into somebody who you have never met but wrote about this week it was Sidney McLaughlin from Killyleagh, Sid is having an excellent season and might be very well up Section F this week with yet another Club win after finishing 5th Section F last week from Clonmel. Sid is racing a lot of birds gifted to him from good friend Robert Trimble a Janssen based family that are doing the business for a few fanciers around the country.

MID-ANTRIM COMBINE REPORT

Mid Antrim had just under 3,000 birds competing in the weekend race from Pilmore Beach, the birds were released at the earlier time of 9.00am in a helping south west wind and cleared very well. The race was a bit erratic and it appears the birds had to contend with some heavy showers in Southern Ireland. Some club winners were on their own, and a number of birds were still missing at tea time. Most of those have now turned up and local fanciers will be making plans for the future races which include next weekend the first National from Rosscarbery.   The best bird in the local area was timed by Houston Bros at 12.57pm to record velocity 1548ypm to take 1st Club Randalstown and the winner of Mid Antrim Combine and the NIPA Section B. The Randalstown HPS had a fantastic result and others well placed will include John Millar, Houston Bros with a second bird, Simon Millar and Stewart Bros with two birds. Big strong competition in this club.

The rest of the Mid Antrim Club winners include: Joe Devlin 1st Ballymena & Dist 1543, Harry Smyth & Son 1st Broughshane & Dist 1523, Gary Gibson 1st Cullybackey HPS 1514, George McDowell 1st Kells & Dist 1494, K & K Kernohan & Sons 1st Harryville 1493, Willie Greer 1st Ahoghill 1492, Davy Jackson & Son 1st New Antrim 1471, and J & D Surgenor 1st Rasharkin & Dist 1466.   The local fancy extend their sympathy to Ballymena & Dist member Bertie Blair on the death of his mother in the last week. Arrangements for Rosscarbery Inl Nat are that the entry fees etc will be collected in the Cullybackey HPS on Wednesday 16th May between 8.30pm and 9.30pm. Birds will be race marked in the Cullybackey Centre on Thursday 17th May between 4.00pm and 6.30pm, weather permitting the race will be flown on Saturday 19th May. Clocks will be available on Friday evening at the Cullybackey Centre and on the same night a demonstration on the new Electronic Timing System by Tauris. Ray Knight will host an evening for the Unikon ETS System in Chimney Corner Football Club on Monday 21st May and the next night in Ligoniel & Dist, both at 7.00pm. Best reported birds in East Antrim were in the Glengormley HPS, four early arrivals for D & J Campbell & H Bigger with the winner timed at 12.53pm recording velocity 1569. All four were cocks racing widow-hood, the winner was a two year old Cheq Cock Janssen x Cosworth Stud bloodlines. This bird was winning for the fourth time and was the NIPA Champion OB of the Year in 2006, a season the loft won the Sect C Fancier of the Year Award. A small kit of youngsters similar to the winners will be ready shortly contact either Davy Campbell Tel: 07886451205 or Hugh Bigger Tel: 07796848484. The loft was just decimal points ahead of Bingham & Seaton who had 1st Ligoniel & District, this is the first prize this yearling hen has won. She is sister and half sister to birds that have won prizes in the Section & Open and also birds to win prizes in the Ulster Federation for other fanciers. BRANIFFS HAVE A FIELD DAY FROM FERMOY WITH THE FEDERATION

Joe Flood writes that the Ulster Federation were in Fermoy County Cork some 190 miles into Belfast for the fifth race of the old bird programme. With bad weather forecast for the afternoon an early liberation was planned and the convoy was released at 8.30am. In a helping light Southerly wind it proved to be a very good decision with most lofts reporting full returns. With most of the results at hand the likely winner of 1st Open Ulster Federation and probably no surprise considering the way this loft has been racing in recent weeks. It was a fantastic result for Joe & Davy Braniff of the Wheatfield, they take top spot on velocity 1620 with the top seven positions in the club. The icing on the cake has to be 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th 7 10th Open Ulster Fed and the other two birds placed in the top 20. A cracking result in any man’s books and with the Skibbereen Championship Race coming up next week – the loft to watch. They are followed in 3rd Open spot going to another loft having a great start to the season Ricky (legs) McCullough of the Fortfield recording velocity 1618. Passing the Milltown Estate last week I saw big Ricky flagging the birds like a good one – it must be working! Tom (Ruby) O’Reilly of the Andersonstown takes 5th open on 1611, he was telling me a lot of his clubmates were racing on the East to West system. He said he was trying something different this year the South to North System, a good result Tommy. Looking down the results I see P & K McCarthy of the Grosvenor take 1st & 2nd and a Top 10 finish in the Federation. Big Jimmy McGann has the top three in Britannia and Rab Fear has 1st & 2nd in South Belfast. Keep in touch lads, Tel: (90) 225999, Fax: (90) 200848.
