NIPA & AROUND
As a scribe I always look forward to this time of the year when all the racing is over. It's only then that you can make plans for the weekends ahead and the one just past saw myself down in Dublin along with Ian & Peter Gibb of Lisburn. Our first call was with the Sandyhill Proprietor Henry Byrne just on the airport side of Dublin. Henry and Ian have been the best of friends for a very long time and together along with Peter run a very successful stud with most of the pigeons for sale housed at Henry’s excellent array of lofts to the back of the Sandyhill Feed Store.
Snapped in Dublin after one too many, Ian and Peter Gibb, Adie McCormick and Christy Bradley (Dublin Homing)
After unloading this week's arrivals we headed onto the Dublin Homing where Henry was conducting a couple of Auctions but not before stopping off at the local for a bite of Sunday Lunch, which was superb, and with Henry settling the bill what more could you ask for. The hospitality was outstanding as was the Guinness and the Whiskey, so much so that we returned home around 2.30am on Monday. Now that’s what you call a day out, although both Ian and myself were some what a little tender on Monday. Many thanks to everybody I met at the Dublin Homing who made me very welcome indeed and of course thanks extended to Ian and Peter Gibb, especially Peter who stayed off the juice as he volunteered for the driving job.
I have a lot of news this week from different sources with much of it centred on awards with all the big organisations announcing their respective winners for 2007. In the Irish National Flying Club the Ballyclare & Dist partnership of C & L Woodside won the J M K McGugan Perpetual Cup for 1st Open Sennen Cove Young bird Nat and also win the Jarvis Cup Best average in the two Young Bird Nationals from Sennen Cove and Skibbereen North. Colin & Leslie Woodside have a wonderful record at the long distance racing; previously they have won the INFC National Championship for the Best Ave in All Nat Races in the one season but had never won 1st Open. That was put right in our very hard YB Nat flown from Sennen Cove in late August when the loft took the winning position in a photo finish with club mate Andy Gault. C & L Woodside recorded velocity 844 flying 324 miles, their Blue hen now named Skilgan Choice had races from Navan (1), Navan (2), Roscrea and the training toss the week previous from Mallow with the Glenavy Gold Wing the bird flying seven and a half hours. She was sent mated up to an old cock for a few days. The sire was a 2006 late bred from Arnold Thompson, his 5th Open Yearling Nat bird Smyth Bros breeding when mated to a hen of his own that has bred 20th Open Dinard, 11th Open INFC Friendship Nat etc and g/dam of 18th Kings Cup of the Smyth Bros Kenyon lines. The dam was a Blue hen from good friend Billy Matthews of Bray bred from his No 1 Stock Hen. This hen has bred the loft many good birds that have scored from Skibbereen, Yearling Nat and Penzance/Sennen Cove YB Nationals. Her breeding is Janssen. A well deserved winner for C & L Woodside although the result was too close to call, they also collect the Jarvis Cup for Best Ave 2 x YB Nationals as well as the famous J M K McGugan Cup.

BEATTIE PRESENTATION EVENING
The Seagoe Hotel in Portadown was the venue for the awards night of H Beattie & Son in conjunction with Versele Laga who had sent a team of three members over from Belgium to entertain the guests. They were Mathieu De Clippel, Stefan Mertens and Vet Wim Boddaert. Each in turn said a few words covering their particular role in the Versele Laga business. In the short time available they were able to cover some of the products for, feeding, breeding and racing and then Wim explained some of the disease problems, what to look out for and some ideas to go about fixing problems. Fanciers attended from as far apart as Coleraine and Monaghan and guests included the leading officials of both the NIPA and INFC, both of those organizations do enjoy extensive sponsorship by Versele Laga through H Beattie & Son of Tandragee.
