National Flying Club Results & Information Database

Report 2005/03

Further Race Results Statistics

When I joined the National Flying club in the mid-nineties it organised three old bird races and the one young bird race. The Nantes OB and the YB race would draw large entries of 8000 – 12000 and Pau around 5000. Sadly these entries are a far cry from more recent entry levels of 5000 – 9000 and 3000 – 4000 respectively … due to a marked decrease in membership plus a very high percentage of members choosing not to send to ANY of the club’s races. Quite why some 2500 of our members are happy to pay an annual subscription and then NOT race is a mystery to me. Accepted there will always be a few who are relocating, suffering ill health, or whose work prevents them racing but this surely accounts for only a small percentage? Surely what we must do is to identify the reasons WHY they can’t or won’t send. If just 10% of these silent members chose to send then entries would surely increase by a minimum of 1000 at Nantes and the cost per pigeon could be reduced for all competitors. We really do need to engineer a response to the twin threats of rising costs and reducing membership and entries … and fast!

The race program we have is diverse and always challenging and I feel there is something for everyone regardless of your loft management system and base family strains. Nowadays we have an Old Hens race appended to the race program (conjoined with the YB race) and since 2003 the Dax International has been included in the program. You won’t need reminding how successful the Dax race has proved to be … confirming that the UK has fanciers and pigeons capable of competing and winning against the very best opposition in Europe. It’s perhaps early days to construct statistics and trends for Dax, with just two results to work with, but a future article will attempt to pick out some interesting snippets and team performances.

Now, including the Hens National races and the Dax Internationals the National Flying club has had 37 races between 1998 – 2004. I thought it would be interesting to see which members have the highest incidence of timing into these results, regardless of any positions achieved. The hope was that I would find members who had been bold enough to enter into and then time in against the rest of the Nation in every race. These hopes were to be dashed but as you’ll see I did find one member who fell just one race short!

Now of course it has to be recognised that not every member feels overly inclined to enter the Hens National races, and of course a good many members fly widowhood cocks only, and this will account for a good many Members not having a higher return in the above table. Equally there are some members who prefer not to send to the Young Bird National preferring to test them as Yearlings instead. Then there are those who took a stand of principle against the Dax race being included in the race program. Below is an amended list excluding the Hens and Young Bird Nationals and Dax International Races leaving us with the 21 traditional Old Bird races:-

Here now we have six members who have timed into each and every result. Before some of you challenge this table and question why your name doesn’t appear in this list then remember that 2001 saw us flying inland to Sennen Cove and also to San Sebastian and Herstal … all because of the foot-and-mouth outbreak that year.

Next we move onto those Members who have clocked the most pigeons into our results:-

It’s worth remembering at a time when the Nation is being drowned in pre-election statistics, spin, and promises that all the above reflects the PAST and in no way predicts the FUTURE. Future success is within everyone’s grasp through hard work and commitment and we all surely aspire to take on and challenge all the fanciers mentioned above with renewed vigour this year. Best wishes to all!
