JEANETTE TAYLOR LANCASHIRE NEWS Hi everyone, welcome to Lancashire Life. Sadly I have just been informed that John Bunting of Bolton passed away this weekend. He had been flying pigeons for over fifty years and was a well liked and well respected member of the pigeon fraternity. Please join me in passing on condolences to his family; he will be sadly missed by all at Farnworth & DHS and Rawson Mid week Flying Club as well as by his own club and colleagues. I had a really lucky day last Saturday, first of all one of my widowhood cocks took the Red card in my club's race from Yeovil, a distance of just under 180 miles in what turned out to be a strange race with a gap of nine minutes before my next bird and than 8 minutes for the next one to turn up. I must admit to not seeing or even hearing the first and winning bird arrive home, thank goodness for ETS. Having spoken to one or two people the ETA was given at 3 ½ to 3 ¾ hours so I decided to potter about the garden and trim the rather overgrown box shrubs into some kind of pyramid shape with scissors. As usual all the garden shears were blunt so to stave off my boredom I got the scissors out and began snipping away giving them a nice haircut. I had no idea of the time and it was only when I heard the bob wires go in the widowhood loft I realized one of the cocks had returned, trying to sneak in without me seeing him. He must have had silencers on his wings because not a flap or flutter was to be heard, I was really pleased though because he must have come on line without messing about and went straight into the loft and in his box to his waiting hen. I’m not sure if Yeovil is a suitable race point for the Border Amal as the last two races from there have been a bit iffy with a lot of members reporting poor returns on the day. Luckily on both races I had 100% returns but quite a few didn’t, think I will go on Google Earth and have a look at the line of flight.
John Allen of Farnworth HS working hard. On checking inside the loft he was all cosied up and obviously the new feeding and motivation regime had worked (for this week at least). His hen was keen to see him so that helped 100% as some weeks I’ve found some of the hens not bothering when the cocks return, but this week all went well and that elusive Red card was mine and Eric’s. I’ve got hen boxes in their section but don’t lock them in and sometimes they pair up together on the floor. When I visited Dave Hawkin’s loft he had his hens on poles with a wire sloping mesh on the floor to prevent that so I wonder whether its worth changing their section around an housing them that way. Either that or lock them up in the boxes I’ve got, I will have to have a rethink on that one. I wish I’d trained them up now and raced them this year its such a waste, maybe next year it won’t be too late as a lot of them are yearlings and have raced down to Portland anyway. Many thanks must go to Keith Arnold from Warwickshire who is an RPRA Sprint Award winner and an excellent fancier who has won 5 out of the last 6 Fed races (being 2nd in the other one). Keith kindly gave me some feeding and motivation tips which I followed to the letter. Eric was made up when I took the result to the Hospital, he thought I was kidding and it cheered him up no end. My next piece of good luck was playing internet bingo and winning £200 followed by our club syndicate winning £20 on the Lottery, pity there wasn’t a few more noughts after it but not to worry our turn will come and then we will all employ Loft Managers to do the dirty work, well I will anyway and become a lady of leisure just watching the birds arrive and Pip messing around in the garden. She went head over heels in her excitement the other day and rolled like a log down the garden, she looked really funny but got up in a huff and took it out on the young birds by chasing them off the lawn. Accrington & DHS/David Stuttard – 8 members sent 64 birds to Lessay and The Lollipop Man strikes again, first past the post with a 2yo Cheq Pied Busschaert cock on 1209 is TA Slattery & Son. In fourth place with a 2yo Haslingden Special Mealy cock and a velocity of 1188.289 is Billy Bentley & Son. Thanks to David for your best wishes to Eric (Jeanette). Barnoldswick Premier FC/Paul Taylor - Hi and welcome to another sunny week from Barnoldswick, with some big races this weekend from the channel our Club was at Lessay. On the 31st May, 2008 our birds were let loose from at 915 and making easy work of this trip were the flying Pennington’s. Taking 1st, 2nd & 3rd Mr & Mrs Pennington on 1192, 1132 and 1126. 4th G Thompson, well done Alan those hens are really flying well for you this year with the first two both being hens, well done. On to Yeovil this week after racing from Lessay, no doubt the clubs sprint king will be looking forward to this race. The birds were let loose at 09.30 am into a light North West wind and taking the first four is Steve Gilbert on 1292, 1282, 1268 and 1263. Well done Steve and looking like another 1st North East Lancs Fed Steve really has been flying great now for the past few seasons and also featuring on the Border Amal results which in itself is spectacular flying from a man on top of his game at the moment and most probably some of the best flying the North East Lancs Fed has seen for a while. Well done onto next week which will be from across the pond. Blackburn Fed/Diane Slattery – Congratulations Mr O'Sullivan (Oswaldtwistle), way out in front Billy, if you keep winning they will send you back to Ireland. Mr Parker your boys did well, David taking 1st and 2nd in his Club (Clitheroe) and Alan taking 1st at Chatburn. Congratulations to Geoff Williams at Padiham, Chris Westwell at Great Harwood and Mr & Mrs Grayston at Bentham. Congratulations must also go to another one of the men in my life, Brian Tattersall at Accy. Well here we go again to the Lollipop Man. He was in such a dilemma this week, with the stupid rule of Defra, should he try and find something to send or go shopping with me. Low and behold he found a yearling to send, convenient heh? Well the dozy bugger came back half an hour after every one else's. Its beak may face the other way if it is not careful! Oh the joys of pigeon racing - I always thought it was a pleasant and stress free hobby - JOKE. You all should be happy with the second channel race next weekend. What a stupid rule - no good if you do not have a big team of pigeon's is it? On to the result. 48 members sent 572 birds to Mangotsfield OB2 flown on the 7th June, 2008 and liberated at 945am in a very light North wind. 1st Billy O’Sullivan/Oswaldtwistle HS 1301 Blue C. 2nd & 3rd D Parker/Clitheroe HS 1296 Black C and 1295 Cheq W/F C. 4th H Lofthouse/Clitheroe 1294.80 Blue C. 5th G Williams/Padiham HS 1294.04 Cheq C. 6th J Holgate/Clitheroe 1282.70 Cheq C. 7th B Stuttard/Padiham 1282.39 Cheq C. 8th Mr A Parker/Chatburn HS 1280.80 Cheq C. 9th C Westwell/Great Harwood HS 1280.74. 10th GH Haworth & Son/Padiham 1279 Blue C. Castleton FC/Michael Fleming – In the Castleton race from Lessay, 6 members sent 68 pigeons liberated at 915am in a light North East turning to North West wind. It turned out to be a good race with good returns. Taking first and second on 1222 and 1220 was Brandon, Culshaw & Brandon with their Soontjens. I think the winning the last five races at Castleton and flying superbly, dedicated to the sport. Other members are looking well in the competition, beat Brandon, Culshaw & Brandon and you will be on the Fed sheet. At third and fourth on 1217 and 1215 was Malc & Janet Campbell with their Braspenning’s. Malc is flying the birds well at the moment. He was fourth Lancashire Nantes last week and Brandon, Culshaw & Brandon were second in the same race. That is the class at Castleton, next channel race is Fougeres, roll on two weeks. Cheadle Cheshire Flying Club/Glenn Moore - Mangotsfield on the 7th June, 2008 when 10 club members sent 147 birds. At 1030 the birds were liberated in to a North West wind with plenty of sunshine and blue sky. Taking 1st & 4th club is the man himself John Corris with his flying machines the Corris Concords. John’s 1st bird in the clock timed in at 13.26.09 on 1331 is a Blue bar Van Loon cock flying on widowhood. The sire & dam are via Mick McMurchie out of a son of 777 daughter of the Magician. John’s 2nd bird in the clock timed in at 13.26.34 on 1328 is a Blue Pied cock flying on widowhood and is Koopman blood lines self bred. Taking 2nd & 3rd club is the lovely couple and partnership Mr & Mrs Palfreyman with their family of pigeons that have outstanding results over the years for them. 1st in the clock timed in at 13.24.11 on 1329 is a Dark Chequer cock on widowhood. 2nd in the clock timed in at 13.24.16 on 1329 is a Mealy cock also flying on widowhood. Mr & Mrs Palfreyman have picked up the pools as well. Well done to you all from all in club. Darwen HS/Chris Ainscough - Flying from Mangotsfield on Saturday 7th June, 10 Members sent 14 birds liberated at 1030 into a light North West wind. Well this week I went down to the club with my birds feeling a little more confident and enthusiastic, as the birds had had nearly a fortnights rest, hoping I would be further up the sheet, and ready to knock the man from the top spot. Having only had two tosses from Kearsley would they be ok and would they be fit enough? Keith put my birds through and did say they felt well, the birds are well and flying well round the loft, so Saturday’s race will tell. Basketing went off well but the ETS lads had to revert back to their T3’s due to a slight problem, and after Brian read the manual, all will be well for next week. The result and my wish was not to be. 1st Keith Nuttall’s Cheq cock flying 153mls on 1295. 2nd Keith Nuttall’s Cheq cock on 1258. 3rd working their way up Thornley & Kennedy’s Blue cock flying 153mls on 1244. 4th Keith Nuttall’s Blue cock on 1243. Keith collected 1st & 2nd Noms and 1st & 3rd PM. Steve & Janice had 2nd PM and a big smile. Keep up the good work & well done. So till next week ta ra. Deane & DFC/Chris Ainscough – Mick Haslam reports Saturday 7th June, 2008 flying from Mangotsfield 5 members sent 56 birds liberated at 1030 into a Light North West wind. As we all know Chris hasn’t been seen around Darwen since Saturday’s race. She was hoping for the birds to be on track this week, but not so. I believe the birds were in good condition on Friday basketing night, but still haven’t done the business. Maybe she needs to go and see her old friend Bill Duckworth. Chris has been sighted in Blackpool entering the Hall of Mirrors, maybe she has seen Bill? Now for the result. 1st W Haslam & Son & The Silver Grizzle with a Blue cock flying 145 mls on 1293. 2nd W Haslam & Son & The Grizzle with another Blue cock on 1283. 3rd W Haslam & Son, what another Blue cock on 1281. 4th Mr. & Mrs Lomax with a Cheq cock flying 146mls on 1267. Well done. Droylsden Flying Club/John Bancroft – 8 members sent 65 birds to Yeovil liberated at 930 in a North West wind. In first place is Chris Delahunt & Son with a yearling Grondelaer cock getting his first red card on 1248, closely followed by John Smith & Son with a 2yo Mealy hen bred from his Ronnie Whitworth x Geoff Kirkland pigeons on 1445. Chris Delahunt & Son got their nom bird for 3rd with his good 2yo cock a winner of 5x1st and a Fed topper this year from Cheltenham on 1230. 4th goes to Norman Johnson with one of his Robbie Byford pigeons they have done well for him, he only sends a handful to each race on 1226. Eccles & Winton HS/Jerry Thomas – 14 members sent 196 birds to Portland on the 24th May, 2008 liberated at 1015 in a North East wind. 1st & 2nd Wall, Lunt & Green on 1287.780 with a Blue Janssen cock and 1287.309 with a Cheq Janssen hen. 3rd A Nixon on 1264 with Blue Delbar hen and 4th G Capps on 1187 with a Blue Janssen x Gaby Vandenabeele cock. Failsworth Flying Club/Jeanette Taylor – 8 members sent 75 birds to Yeovil on the 7th June, 2008 liberated at 930 in a North East wind. Taking the Red card this week is me and Eric aka Mr & Mrs E Taylor on 1285 with a Blue Leo Rijsdik widowhood cock. 2nd, 3rd and 4th is Dave Beaumont on 1269, 1252 and 1245 with his Janssens. Eric and I also took the £1 Nom with our third bird home. Not quite a straightforward race for some with the birds taking over four hours to fly the 180 miles home with returns rather gappy, good returns for us though with a full complement on locking up. Farnworth DHS/Mary Green – The Club held their comeback race from Mangotsfield and 21 members sent a total of 277 birds that were liberated at 930 into a light North West wind. In top spot once again was John Allen with the same Chequer cock, this is four wins for this bird and five for John this season, on a velocity of 1301. Second was Paul Riley with a Chequer hen on 1292, third was Mr & Mrs Ken Green with a Barker Chequer cock which was a gift bird from Frank Wardle on a velocity of 1277.676 and a very close fourth was DH Johnson on 1277.653. I am afraid to say that several members said that birds arrived home with muddy feet after going down for water or they made a beeline for the drinkers when entering the loft.
Farnworth members busy basketing.

I think John going to call this pigeon if only or near miss I think it’s the cock that went over his shoulder the other week. Hindley Green Homing Society/Barrie Rhoden – 8 members sent 124 birds to Mangotsfield on the 7th June, 2008 liberated at 1030 in a light North West wind. 1st F Chadwick 1279 Blue C. 2nd K Smith 1278 Blue C. 3rd, 4th & 5th Chadwick Bros 1274 Blue H, 1263 Cheq H and 1262 Red H. Lymm FC/Derek Woodward – The birds were liberated from Lessay at 915 in a North West wind on the 31st May, 2008. 1st & 3rd A Gough & Son with a Blue Van Bruane x Van Hee widow cock on 1253; their second bird was a Blue widow cock off Brougemann Bro doing 1210. The birds were held over until Sunday due to bad weather conditions on Saturday. At 9am in a North East Wind veering to North West the birds where released. It was always going to be a tough race and so it was, but even so the form birds came through once again. Roy & Mark Acton had five in the first eight taking 1st. 2nd. 4th & 6th. Their first and fifth bird taking all pools and ten points for the league, ensuring them of winning same already with one race to go. Their first pigeon was a 3yo Mealy cock. This cock was not flown as a young bird being a late bred. It has previously won 1st Club, 1st Fed, 12th Combine Kingsdown (5135 Birds), 1st Club, 2nd Fed, 6th Combine Fougeres (2628 Birds). The sire is a Red Marcelis and the Dam is a Light Cheq Marcelis crossed with an Acton Special. The other birds they clocked in have all been in the clock this season on a regular basis, and they must be looking forward to the Channel racing with their team hitting form at the right time. David Farrell splitting them once again taking 3rd and 5th his 3rd prize bird a Leen Boer cross, a consistent pigeon being seven times in the first four including Fylde 2B. It is also the daughter of last week’s winner and nest mate to “87” which won 1st Penkridge. The 5th prize bird a Soontjen cross from the “77” Cock a gift bird from fellow member Alan Cornwall. On to Lessay when 10 members sent 97 Birds on the 31st May, 2008. The first race from France being Lessay was a tough old race, released in a North, North West Wind at 630am. For some their birds were well split up and others had them falling in. The best at Marton was Les Barrow who is no stranger to success; he won with a Blue W/F Staf Van Reet Yearling cock from Mark Cauldwell on roundabout. This was the best young bird for Les last year. His 2nd bird taking 3rd Prize a Cheq Yearling cock on natural flying to eggs, over sitting. This cock is his old Busschaert lines going back to Arthur Beardsmore “Terror Lines”. 2nd Club went to the ever popular David Morrison with a Janssen bred bird from J & S Isles of Lytham. The yearling Cheq cock is the same way bred as David’s famous pigeon that won the Combine a couple of years ago. David will make the top table at the “Social Circle” if he keeps this up. David always seems to come good at the distance. Roy & Mark Action in the prizes once again 4th Club with a Light Cheq hen. The partnership were a little disappointed with the overall performance of their birds this week and are hoping for better things next week, we shall see. Anne & Steve Nicholls who won this race last year started favourites and didn’t disappoint us they will be delighted with 5th club after winning the Fed. Two weeks ago, still plenty of form in this loft. David Farrell who was 1st. 2nd & 3rd last week had to be content with 6th club this week but still up with leaders and taking a card, but knowing David he will not rest on his laurels. Roy and Mark Acton take the 60% share of the pools with David Farrell taking the 40%. Middleton DHS/Budgie Crathorne – We are pleased to report that 18 members sent 192 Birds in a light North West wind to Mangotsfield on the 7th June 2008.
