JEANETTE TAYLOR

LANCASHIRE NEWS

Hi everyone, welcome to Lancashire Life. What an awful week for training and racing, especially here in Manchester. It’s been bitterly cold, raining, and misty and some sleet and hailstone with a little bit of sunshine thrown in on a rare occasion. In between all this horrible weather the cocks have had three training tosses and I’m already three down and I haven’t had a race yet. They are still eating up the skies around home so I’m not sure where the three absentees are at this moment. However it brings me down to 18 widowhood cocks which is a more manageable number for me although I think one or two of them don’t like me very much. I can’t understand why I give them the best corn, a nice loft to live in, the occasional female company, what more could they possibly want?

I did notice that once I stopped using the peanuts for treats their attitude towards me changed somewhat, I wasn’t any use to them anymore! Because I have some yearlings in that loft I decided to let them see the hens for a few minutes on their return from training only, not after their flights around home. I’m trying to bond them to the boxes and make them realise that when they go in the basket there will be a treat on their return, it seems to be working for some of them but one or two are still quite stupid. They’ve got a mind of their own, just like Pip! The youngsters haven’t seen a lot of the outside world due to the poor weather conditions, especially the strong winds, but they do enjoy their freedom when they get the chance and the bath in the aviary has been put to good use when they couldn’t go out. The hens seem to enjoy being in there with them but will have a shock soon when they are moved to their own section. The little White orphan is still chasing a hen around and the old hen still feeds him, spoiled or what. I’ve even noticed that a couple of young cocks in there are taking an interest in the hens and they are only three months old! Their parents have bred me four youngsters, two last year and two this and all four have been cocks. I’ve still got last years and they are in the widowhood team to race this year, if we ever get a race.

The seasons are constantly changing and I think it would be a good idea if we started racing two or three weeks later, say at the beginning of May and run it to the end of September. Every year the weather at the beginning of April is rubbish and disrupts the racing, last week was an awful race according to those who sent with many lofts reporting a lot of birds missing at tea time. Thankfully I didn’t send, having studied the weather on the internet and asked the advice of one or two pigeon friends. I think I would have lost the rest of my yearlings but they are here to fight another day and will be going to Cheltenham this week if the forecast is good. We just need to take a close look at how and when we are racing and adapt our programmes to suit the ever changing weather.

I became drawn into a saga last week of trying to repatriate a stray with its owner who didn’t want it back. This bird had found its way into a garage in my area and the lads there had spent three days trying to trace the owner. They reported the pigeon and the owner contacted them and told them to give it water and throw it out, now this pigeon couldn’t even fly and was in no fit state to be thrown out. After further phone calls the owner then told them that he wasn’t prepared to pay £30 to get his pigeon back and wasn’t wasting his petrol coming to collect it. The poor guys were then at a loss to know what to do and eventually contacted me. After a quick phone call one of the guys in my Federation volunteered to collect the pigeon and relieve the lads in the garage of their troublesome guest, but I wonder how often this happens when people say things like this to non fanciers. It doesn’t do our image any good and a quick call to a local fancier would have solved the problem. Whenever I pick up a stray from a member of the public they are always concerned as to what will happen to it and would rather keep it than let it come to harm. Once you get talking to them about racing pigeons they are fascinated and want to ask loads of questions. One lady reported one of my White babies last year and said that it was the star of the village as all the locals had got used to seeing her flitting about. Happily she returned home and has stayed here ever since.

Splitting Terry’s birds for third place is Billy Bentley with one of his Haslingden Specials, a 2yo Cheq w/f hen on 1047. Billy would like me to say a big thank you to his friend Jimmy Johnson for all the help he gives with the birds.

Barnoldswick Premier Flying Club/Welcome to new Press Officer Paul Taylor – Hi and welcome to another new season from sunny Barwick! We kicked off our first race of the programme from Wollaston on the 12th April, 2008. Here at Barnoldswick Prem we have a great bunch of lads and a really friendly club which boasts some of the best flying members in the North East Lancs area, so I’ll say if you want to fly with the best come and join us. Also I believe we have a few non flying members which is a shame, so come on lads come down with your baskets of a Friday and join in the fun. Back to the race, the Wollaston birds were let go at 12noon in a West wind and making light work of it was Mr Steve “the man” Gilbert, taking the first four positions. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Steve “the man” Gilbert on 1536, 1529, 1523 and 1519. Congratulations go to Steve Gilbert on also topping the North East Lancs Fed, 1st and 2nd well done Steve. I’m hoping to put a bit more info about the members and birds once I get it passed on so if you want owt adding lads let us know at basketing, cheers the kid aka Paul Taylor. All the best everyone this season and come on someone put an end to this amazing run of 1st Feds by the man big Steve G.

On the 19th April, 2008 the lads from Barnoldswick had their second race from Kempsey. I know a few was scared of the cold forecast and every reason to be it was freezing waiting for the birds on Saturday, god knows what it was like in the skies, anyhow the terminator Steve Gilbert was back at it. Kempsey birds let go in an East North East wind at 10am and in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place was Steve Gilbert on 1281, 1231, 1227 and 1212. Congratulations again to the terminator topping the NE Lancs Fed again well done and to P & B Taylor on winning the nom with a 2yo Braspenning hen. Well done to all members on a very bitterly cold day, let’s hope it will be a bit more like summer next week from the kid aka Paul Taylor

Young John Brandon has joined the partnership with Father Bobby Brandon & “Bacon” Culshaw, what a team. The winning pigeon is a Busschaert which has won many a race before, like the rest of the team. In second place on 1594 was Dean Andrews with his team of Staf Van Reets. Dean generally works on young birds but not a bad start with yearlings. Dean is a good worker at the Club and is a dedicated flyer. In third place on 1560 was Joe Whelan with a Delbar. Joe is renowned for channel races so well done Joe getting them right for a short race. In fourth place on 1553 was C & D Cullen with a Van den Pol, once again Chris is a very good member of Castleton, loading, marking and helping out the President if any problems arise. Without flyers like Chris it would be hard times.

Darwen HS/Chris Ainscough – Hi Flyers. It’s Friday night and here we are again. Sat here pen in hand and ready for the first birds to be marked for Cheltenham. Everything’s all nice and bonny, everyone mucking in until Jimmy arrives and 'the get at night’ starts. Looks like it’s gonna be Chris Mather again. The rubber doll conversation starts (wish I could tell you the whole tale), Jim asked where he keeps her, and Chris tells us, she's looking out the window, keeping an eye on the lofts, and its better than being on your own Jimmy, you should get one. She’s no hassle, and unlike all women, she doesn’t answer back. Anyway on to more serious business, two members are having a trial run with their ETS systems, and Brian is looking for two members to learn how to do the result, so any volunteers see Brian. Last week was the start of our club KO and this season there's only three rounds, due to the lack of competitors. This week Chris Mather flies against Keith Nuttall, and I will be taking on Bruce Peacock. Bruce is doing well with his very late, latebreds from the back end of last year.

It’s gonna be a hard race tomorrow again, with a strong East wind forecast once again. So you on your allotments, get well wrapped up, you’re in for a long wait. Saturday morning and they've got it right, it’s really cold and it’s that Easterly wind, and it’s strong. My loft is on top of the hill, so I'll be sat inside today. The birds are taking such along time to arrive, I think I'm froze to the seat, (should have got the thermals out). I was so cold I didn’t even go to the club for the result, Dolly (Janet) offered to take my clock, so I stayed home to defrost. When I got the result on Sunday morning, I thought to myself, this result won’t take long to write; so here goes.

Saturday 19th April, 2008 flying from Cheltenham and liberated at 1115 into a SE wind. 10 members sent 136 Birds. I only need to mention 1 name Franco Ponti 1-2-3-4 flying 124 miles on velocities of 1172, 1148, 1146 and 1117. Franco picked up 1st prize monies. WELL DONE Franco. It was a stiff wind to tackle the winner with a 2yo Blue Cheq Gaby Vandenabeele cock is Mr & Mrs John Bancroft on 1244. This cock was due a win having been beaten for first place as a yearling by a loft mate, its previous form being 2x2nd, 1x3rd, 1x4th and a 5th. It had to beat a good bird to win the race by beating Chris Delahunt & Son; they got last week’s winner again the 4yo Grondelaer cock on 1185. This cock is a winner of 4x1st and 2nd Border Amal also picking up monies in the Lancs Nantes, this pigeon picks up a 10 pointer in the points league and the nom and they also got 3rd Club with the same yearling cock that was 3rd last week. Second was Graham McKay with a Red hen on 1162, third was Jack Chadwick’s Red cock on 1158 and fourth was Wicker & Hardman with a Chequer cock on 1152.
