JEANETTE TAYLOR

LANCASHIRE NEWS

Hi everyone, welcome to Lancashire Life. I think I spoke too soon last week about the progress of my young birds. I decided to put them into their first race at Wollaston, a distance of around 71 miles to me and now I wish I hadn’t bothered. I felt reasonably confident they would cope with the distance ok having had some good returns from training, but I wasn’t expecting such a disastrous race. 26 entries were basketed on Friday night with high hopes of a good race. The day started off with fairly heavy rain and dark skies in Manchester but as the morning went on the clouds and rain cleared away to a bright sunny day. We only had four members in my club sending with nobody sending to the Border Amal race at Cheltenham. I didn’t feel my youngsters were ready for Cheltenham, a distance of 109 miles to me so I opted for the shorter race with the North Cheshire Fed.

The Lancashire Combine Committee in 1912 at Blackpool.

By tea time on Saturday night I only had 6 out of my 26 entries back with no sign of the others. I went to the hospital to pick Eric up for his weekend leave and hoped on my return there would be quite a lot more back but to no avail. Sunday morning saw the return of three more, one of them really tired and then I received two phone calls, one from a chap in Leicestershire and the other in Leeds to say they both had one of my youngsters in their lofts. So they’ve gone in opposite directions possible caught up in other liberations. The man from Leeds has kindly offered to bring the bird down to Manchester when he’s driving through this week but the other one will have to be collected from Leicester. The one I sent for last week with Amtrak from Stoke on Trent belonged to someone else I discovered when it arrived home. The guy on the phone said he had got one of my pigeons in so I assumed it was mine, but being the Club Secretary for Failsworth as well he must have meant it was one of my members. Anyway the member in question has paid up and had his bird returned, funnily enough it was one I bred, spooky or what?

So with an original 50 youngsters in the loft I’m now down to 11 when the other two are returned and they’ve only had one race. What’s the solution, do I keep these 11 back, or just keep the cocks back (I don’t think there are many in there anyway) and just race the hens. If I don’t do something now at this rate I will have no new stock to put in the widowhood loft next year. From what I’ve heard this is the trend in a lot of lofts up and down the country and not just mine. The birds are fit and healthy but something goes wrong on race day, is it the weather, clashing; I don’t suppose we will ever know.

I would like to take this opportunity welcome David Mills on board as the new General Manager of the RPRA. David is from Cheltenham apparently so there’s no need to move house luckily and I understand he’s ex RAF with a very good admin/finance background. Thanks must also go to our outgoing GM Peter Bryant who has done some sterling work on behalf of the organisation, especially in dealing with Defra and the like, good luck for the future Peter from everyone in the North West Region.

If you look under the Garstang notes of Isobel Billington you will see an interesting item about an Any Age Race held in 1933 with some rather unusual prizes. How about taking home a Cockerel, a fat Duck or a 1cwt of potatoes on your club presentation night, those were some of the prizes on offer for the race. Looking back at some of my old books I found a 1962 handbook for the Lancashire Nantes Club and under the clock rules it says that you could send your clock for setting by passenger train due to arrive in Manchester about noon and to insure them. You could also send them by rail for checking but a post card had to be sent by first class post stating the time bird or birds were clocked in. Should your clock stop or be rendered useless you could have it reset by a member of the Committee or time in to the nearest competitors clock, however the time allowance for reaching such a clock was at the rate of five minutes to the mile on foot and three minutes to the mile on cycle with no allowance made for motor driven vehicles. The use of telegrams was also not allowed however you could have a telegram announcing the toss on the payment of 3/- or 15p. Birds were marked at Victoria Station in Manchester on Platform 5 and competitors had to pay carriage and prepay for the return of the empty basket.

Under Rule 4 of Racing Conditions it states that all birds raced to be shown alive to the Secretary or whoever he may appoint as his deputy for verification who reserves to himself the right of tossing them within 100 yards of the competitor’s loft. You would think these rules etc are ancient and yet it was only 1962, my how times of changed. I wonder what the fanciers of the thirties and forties would make of ETS and the way pigeon racing has progressed. If anyone else has got any interesting snippets let me know and I will include them here.

Accrington & DHS/Dave Stuttard – In the Club’s race from Niort the first two places go to Billy Bentley & Son with two of their Haslingden Specials. The first bird is a 2yo Cheq W/f hen doing 753ypm followed by a 3yo Blue hen on 694. TA Slattery & Son “The Lollipop Man” takes third with a yearling Schallie Janssen cock with a velocity of 673ypm. On to the first young bird race from Stafford when 5 members sent 57 birds. Dower Bros & Mowle had a stormer being 270ypm in front of the second placed bird. This going young Red cock they say is a Tatt Special bred by Brian Tattersall with a velocity of 1373. Second to time in was Lawrence “The Quiet Man” Eddisford with a Blue Vandenabeele x Janssen hen on 1104. Billy Bentley & Son take the next two places with their Haslingden Specials. Barnoldswick Prem RPC/Paul Taylor – Hi welcome to another report from Barnoldswick Prem from sunny Barlick. We were onto our 3rd young bird race this week from Wollaston. Well with the birds basketed up on the Friday night and some good banter was had, and all we had to do was wait for our birds on Saturday, easy. Well on the 2nd August, 2008 the birds were released at 1115 into a West South West wind. 1st P & B Taylor on 1513 with a hen flying to the perch from A Walker bloodlines. 2nd P & B Taylor on 1512 with a Jansen cross again flying to the perch. 3rd Steve the terminator Gilbert on 1510 with a wee hen. 4th Mr & Mrs Pennington on 1508 with a cock but no details, come on Nancy reveal your secrets? Well I’ve finally won one this year, it still has not sunk in but it looks good and feels good, well done to all and to M & J Barnes for taking the nom money yet again, on what was a good day all round. The pigeons were back in good time and good returns were had by most members.

Blackburn & District Fed/Diane Slattery – Congratulations to Sanderson & Ramshead at Padiham, Jimmy Jackson at Chatburn, Dave Stuttard at Accy, Alan Lewis at Great Harwood, Carey Bros at Ossy, Ken Croft at Clitheroe, Mr Burrows at Bentham. Well I had Lollipop man all to myself today as he did not send and boy did I make a meal of it – if you know what I mean- and before your minds start racing away – I had breakfast in bed then he took me shopping to Preston, then he bought Chinese for tea, I had four bottles of Stella, went to bed and fell asleep. You can’t get better than that. Some good news on the horizon for the Lollipop man, he entered a bird in the One Loft Race (for his local school) and she came 1st school in a Hot spot Race and has won a trophy for the school. The third time in four years of entering. On to the result – 47 members sent 789 birds to Penkridge n the 2nd August, 2008 liberated at 1130 in a South West wind. 1st & 3rd Sanderson & Ramshead/Padiham HS on 1410 & 1402.06 with two Cheq cocks. 2nd B Stuttard/Padiham 1402.35 Cheq C. 4th G Williams/ Padiham 1375 Cheq C. 5th, 8th, 10th & 11th P Robinson & Son/Padiham 1360 Cheq C, 1345 Cheq C, 1344 Cheq C & 1342 Cheq C. 6th Derek Thompson/Padiham 1353.34 Cheq C. 7th & 18th J Jackson/Chatburn HS 1353.10 Blue C & 1309 Blue H. 9th J Sudderick/Padiham 1345.00 Cheq C. 12th DJ Stuttard/Accrington & Dist 1338 Blue H. 13th B Sharples/Padiham 1335 Cheq C. 14th A Lewis/Great Harwood HS 1320 Blue C. 15th Dower Bros & Mowle/Accrington 1317 Cheq H. 16th Maylor & Son/Padiham 1316 Cheq C. 17th P Nellany/Great Harwood 1313 Blue C. 19th Carey Bros/Oswaldtwistle HS 1308 Blue Cheq Pied C. 20th C Westwell/Great Harwood 1306 Dark H. Castleton FC/Michael Fleming – Racing from Kempsey 126 birds were sent. Taking the first three was yours truly Mick Fleming. The cock on 1419 was bred off John Dearden from his Belgium classics where John goes every year and T Chorlton from Gerry Tom’s stock. This cock was third last week so better this week. In second place on 1415.26 was a bird bred by Ned Cordwell of Ireland and Gerry Clements of Manchester off “Hatton” a superb pigeon. In third place on 1415.24 was a hen bred off a Combine winner Pete Gater and a Van Loon bred by my Brother Frank. In fourth place on 1379 was Joe Whelan with a Staf Van Reet bred by George Newton. Joe’s young ones are flying well and consistently. It was a bad race for returns I have 13 missing, Malc Campbell 15 missing, Chris Cullen 19 missing and Joe Whelan 8 missing. I had no answers, I’ve heard warm weather, gagging for water, clashing with other races, you can go on and on, but it happens every year I just hope they will return.

Pete Gater & John Turner.

Darwen HS/Chris Ainscough –Saturday 2nd August, 2008 flying from Wollaston (2), 9 members sent 212 birds liberated at 11am into a light South West wind. This week I'm sure every report is gonna mention once again the losses of young birds in their clubs. I for one am fed up of writing the same old thing, and everyone jaded in having to read it week in week out. Well this morning (Sunday) I for one, have been having a good think about it, and maybe it’s not down to all the mobile phone masts, the wind turbines and what ever else is knocking about up there. Could it be a little bit of ignorance on our part, and not knowing everything that’s going inside our little feathered friends? My young uns are flying round at home like troopers; they have come good from training, and look good. Apart from the odd feather missing here and there, I’m pleased with them. We each have 5 fingers and 5 toes, each and every one there for a purpose, but yet we send the birds to races missing these odd feathers, could this play a part in the losses? Something to think about. Anyway this morning, having sent the young birds all fit and well (I think) and after losing another 12 in yesterdays race, quite a few of my perches were full of seed that the young uns had brought up. My first thought was the dreaded young bird sickness but there were no loose droppings. I will be making a phone call for advice, because I'll admit it, I don’t know what’s wrong. We can give them this, that and t'other but if the first one doesn’t work we try something else, and it goes on for weeks, no change, and before we know it we’re half way through the season. Is it worth guessing? Now for Darwen’s result. The farmer’s on top again with a Cheq cock flying 83 miles on 1477. 2nd & 3rd Franco Ponti’s Blue Cheq cocks flying 87 miles on 1446 & 1438. 4th Thornley & Kennedy’s Pied cock flying 86 miles on 1416. Franco wins the weekly Lotto. Well done.

Deane & Dist FC/Chris Ainscough – Saturday 2nd August, 2008 flying from Wollaston (2) 5 members sent 126 birds liberated at 11am into a light South West wind. 1st Mr & Mrs Lomax with a Pied hen flying 80 miles on 1555. 2nd, 3rd & 4th A Wicker/K Hardman with a Grizzle C, and two Blue cocks flying 79 miles on 1530, 1530 & 1523. After a terrible chuck for the Cotton Wool boys last week, a good rest for the young uns could see them in action next week. Hoping so and good luck. Well done Droylsden Flying Club/John Bancroft –8 members sent 106 birds to Cheltenham liberated in a South West wind at 1215. 1st with a Cheq hen is Norman Johnson on 1522, his winning pigeon is a Joop Groenen bought at a T Horton sale bred by Mr Haslam, this was its first race. 2nd Chris Delahunt & Son on 1519 with a hen bred by Patrick Dempsey of Dover. 3rd Brian Jackson with one of his Van Reets on 1515. 4th Mick Kelly with a Blue hen on 1493. The Young Bird Average for the first three races sponsored for £50 by Club Secretary and Club HQ Landlord George Fairclough was won by Mr & Mrs Bancroft. The nom winner this week is C Delahunt & Son.

Taking the top four places is JP & S Maylett on 1526, 1525.76, 1525.45 & 1525.14 no bird details to hand.

Falinge Mid Week Club/Mick Fleming – Racing from Penkridge, 410 birds were liberated in a light South wind. Taking first place was Brian & Sandra Fisher with a Delbar cock in what was a fast race and a winning velocity of 1938, and Brian told me he had a good team of youngsters so watch out for him. In second place on 1937 was Glyn & Glyn Bennett with a Rietvink. This partnership has a big team of Rietvink’s off Jack Cornes and they are delighted with their flying. In third place on 1930 was Pete Hardman who won last Saturday at Rochdale. The pigeon is a Gaby Vandenabeele which comes off a winning strain for Peter. In fourth place on 1927 was Gavin Buckley with a Wim Van Leeuwen, Gavin had a fantastic season with old birds and has carried on with young birds. It was a bad race for flyers devastating lofts with losses, it was the same on Saturday and there is no answer what went wrong. I was with the Race Controller and he phoned sixty miles down the road, it was beautiful. He phoned all the points at Congleton, Manchester, lovely weather and then it was a shocking race. He’s done his job but what went wrong there is no answer.

Garstang HS/Isobel Billington – The 26th July saw 12 members sending 286 birds to Stafford for the first young bird race, when the birds were up at 12 noon. The nom bird was won by Ian & John Noblet. Peter & Isobel were 3rd & 4th North West Lancs Fed from 1,070 birds and Terry was 20th position, and finally Ian in 23rd place. Here’s a bit of nostalgia for you with details of the Garstang HS any age race. “On the proposition of Mr J Fairclough and supported by Mr J Winstanley, it was unanimously resolved to hold a race from Bath on September 2nd, 1933 upon the following conditions – Four bird limit at 2/6d each.
