JEANETTE TAYLOR

LANCASHIRE NEWS

Hi everyone, welcome to Lancashire Life. Despite some changeable weather last week we managed to get a very good race from Swainswick in my Federation. Although the weather forecasters had predicted rain for most of the week, there were some bright spells in between when it was possible to get the birds either exercised or trained. Although it was bright and sunny on Saturday, the sky was not perfectly clear in Manchester with some murky clouds hanging around. There was a good South East wind and the birds all returned home, except one which hasn’t been seen since. From letting the widow cocks out, to training and racing them up to date I have lost ten believe it or not and they’re not all yearlings. I started out with 24 at the beginning of the year and now have 14 in the widowhood section plus a cock I thought was a hen but was last seen having relations with a rather friendly hen in the aviary. So he was taken out of his harem and is now sulking in a widowhood box in their section.

Marton Village HS Club House

He has been trained but is desperate, understandably, to get back to where the hens were so I gave him a nice Chequer hen for company whilst awaiting the return of the cocks from Swainswick, but he wasn’t in the least bit interested. I think he’s pining for his own little hen in the other section, but hey that’s life. Well I though I had prepared the cocks ok for the race and they even had their bowls and hens on return but the first one back made me see red. He arrived back in a reasonable time only to land on the roof, look down at me and then take off again flying round. He did this twice in succession and wasted a good four minutes, pushing me further down the sheet by the second. Once he had made up his mind to come in that was it, no messing around and straight to his box and waiting hen. The following two yearlings did the same, one waiting for the other to make the first move, so I’m reliably informed that they are not hungry enough and need a slight reduction in their rations.

On Sunday they were given an ounce of food each in their pots, bearing in mind they hadn’t been fed since their return from the race on Saturday afternoon. The majority of them left half of it so they weren’t hungry at all and maybe this is where I’m going wrong (again). I can’t seem to master the art of feeding widowhood cocks but will persevere, and hopefully will get better results this week. The babies haven’t been out as much as I would have liked but on Sunday afternoon a little Chequer hen appeared at the loft door waiting to go in. They hadn’t been out since the previous Thursday so where she’s been I don’t know but she made her way back on her own. Well done to her, although she did give me a grunt as I let her in because I kept her waiting. I will have to keep my eye on her!

Good Luck must go to Eric this week who goes into hospital next Monday for the operation to remove his brain tumour facing his toughest challenge yet. He was worried about missing the end of the football season and his beloved Manchester City, but I think we will just get away with that. I’ve told him he’d better hurry up and get better as he is the watchman for the birds coming back on Saturdays with him and Pip keeping their eyes peeled for the birds return. So if you remember on Tuesday give him a thought to spur him on.

Now on to a bit of nostalgia sent in by Frank Fleming via George Atherton – The photograph featured goes back to the Hey Homing Society, Lees, Oldham of the prize presentation in 1973 and has been supplied by George Atherton now of St Annes and Marton Village Homing Societies. Perhaps the two gentlemen in the centre will have a shock on seeing this as they are none other than Fred Bloor and Sid Bainbridge. Hey Homing Society was particularly strong at that time with the likes of Bill & Stuart Brooks, Sam Whitworth, Phil Connell etc. Left to right are Norman Buckley, longest old bird race and previous 3rd Lancashire Combine. Frank Howarth, young bird average and many top Federation and Combine positions. Fred Bloor, 1st Lancashire Combine Avranches 1973 and many top positions later to win 1st NFC Pau at Charlton Mackrell. Sid Bainbridge, old bird inland average and again many top Federation positions. Wilfred Atherton and son George with their 1st Lancashire Combine Nantes 1973 trophy. To Fred and Sid, I hope this brings you happy memories and my apologies for any wind ups that may result! Maybe we can meet up at next year’s Blackpool Show?

Accrington & DHS/David Stuttard – Racing from Cheltenham, 12 members sent 199 birds which were liberated in a South wind. A fast race was on the cards and this turned out to be so. Billy Bentley & Son had a great race with their Haslingden Specials taking first, second and fourth places. His first bird a 2yo Mealy cock on 1959, second bird was a 4yo Blue W/f cock doing 1954 and their third bird, taking fourth place was another 4yo Cheq hen on 1947. Splitting these in third spot was a yearling Blue cock, a Janssen x his old breed for Brian “The Shootist” Tattersall on 1950.

Ashton-under-Lyne Flying Club/Harry Kenyon – 11 members sent 138 birds to Swainswick on the 3rd May, 2008 liberated at 10am in a South East wind. 1st R Clarke on 1724 with a Herman x Hartog, also taking all pools and nom. 2nd J & S Ward on 1722 with a Van Der Merwe. 3rd H Kenyon on 1715.24 with a Gaby Vandenabeele bred by S Knowles of Widnes. 4th K Wroe on 1715.06 with a Hofkens.

Atherton HS/Brian Vout – The Club was racing from Cheltenham on the 26th April, 2008, and the birds were liberated at 1110 in a South West wind. Mr & Mrs Dickens were 1st on 1944 with a 3yo Dark Cheq Vandenabeele hen. K & E Shaw were 2nd on 1871 with a Red yearling Soontjen cock. B Vout was 3rd & 4th on 1840 with a 4yo Cheq Lefebre Dhaenen hen and 1829 with a yearling Cheq Soontjen x Thas cock.

Barnoldswick Flying Club/Paul Taylor – Hi and welcome to sunny Barwick, another week another race but the same man or should I say terminator has got his birds in smashing form at present. Steve the man Gilbert has taken the first four in the club for three weeks on the trot, now also taking 1st Fed three weeks on the trot but has failed to win the nom so we may have a wee bit of hope. I think you all would agree this is exceptional flying. Barwick held its 3rd race of the season from Cheltenham on 26th April, 2008. It was a touch warmer than last week waiting for the birds but with the South West wind a fast one was expected, so birds up at 1030 and the results are as follows - Taking the first 4 is the Terminator Steve Gilbert on 1998, 1987, 1982 and 1978. All widowhood cocks I believe but Alan Pennington quite proudly told me he bred Steve’s second pigeon so well done. 5th Mr John Skelton taking the Nom with a hen on 1968. Well done again Steve on taking the top spot in the North East Lancs fed again, and to John on collecting the nom!

I must say we have seen some exceptional flying just lately from Steve Gilbert who I believe took 9th Border Amal from Kempsey on the 19th April, anyhow onto the serious stuff now and we were at Swainswick for our 4th old bird race on the 3rd May, 2008. At 10am our birds were released into a South East wind and another fast race was on the cards. Could anybody end the Terminator Steve Gilberts amazing string of results? 1st Mr John Skelton with a game hen which I believe has scored from across the pond on 1759. 2nd Mr & Mrs Pennington on 1736 with a widowhood cock. 3rd Steve Gilbert on 1735 with a widowhood cock and 4th Mr & Mrs Pennington on 1734 with a hen. Well what a race we have been waiting for some one to end Steve’s great run then two finally beat him, well done John and a great race for the flying Pennington’s. Two members from the elite here at Barnoldswick Prem will gladly tell you that the serious races are yet to come as both enjoy flying with the National Flying Club with both putting some good performances up. At the time of press I believe Mr John National Skelton is topping the North East Lancs Fed so I will say a big well done, with Steve taking home the nom and for once not a Red card. I would like to add that Barnoldswick Prem Club will be holding a Country & Western bash at Barnoldswick Football Club, all organised by the one and only Nancy Pennington. Now these bashes have gone down well in past years with plenty of fun for all the family to be had with a foot stomping disco and great prizes to be won in Nancy’s super raffle, so get your tickets booked now to avoid the disappointment of missing the event of the year. The date is Saturday the 21st of June, 2008 and the ticket hotline number 01282-850243 Nancy Pennington, That’s all for this week and thanks for everyone’s nice comments, the Kid aka Paul Taylor.

Blackburn & District Fed/Diane Slattery - Well the top two from last week have changed places. So congratulations go to Mr & Mrs Grayston second last week, topping the Fed this week and also winning Bentham. Billy O'Sullivan won Ossy and 2nd Fed. All change at Clitheroe with Joe Holgate winning not only Clitheroe but 3rd Fed. Wheatcroft & Hodder took Great Harwood and 6th Fed. Pete Robinson took Padiham & 10th Fed. Our illustrious Treasurer Bob Vallance won Chatburn. Billy Bentley remains on a roll and won Accy again. Congratulations to all. Well flown, the pigeons - not you lot. The Lollipop Man went to a dear friends funeral on Friday, Mr Alan Heap, one of the stalwarts of Padiham Flying Club. Our condolences and prayers are with his family. Now, I had a slight accident in my car on Friday, front spoiler, fog lamp and front grille but that is nothing compared to what is going to happen to the Lollipop man if he doesn't pull his finger out and get his name back on the Fed sheet, as I do the result it is getting very embarrassing - so I hope he reads this and takes notice. Please give him some stick from me if you see him. On to the result.
