NEWS FROM SCOTLAND Reports by Joe Murphy Neil Redmond writes: ‘Hi Joe, unfortunately I have been unable to forward our last two West Lothian Federation results for your column, Charnock Richards & Uttoxeter open, the reason for this being my birds have caught some type of virus and I have virtually spent the last two weeks attending to them. Regrettably my efforts and time spent administering medicines have not worked and to date I have lost 12 yearlings and 24 young birds so I just have not had the heart to do any reports. However, after reading this week's Joe Murphy Column and the way you portrayed our federation I need to get going again so hopefully I will get these results to you as soon as possible. If I may touch on this virus Joe, at this moment in time it would appear that 6 members within the federation all have the same problem with high mortality rate amongst yearlings and young birds. In all my years (50) of keeping and racing pigeons I have never witnessed anything like it, not even PMV. First signs are that the birds have not digested their food then watery droppings to very green slime droppings with small like pellet type deposits, no interest in food and want to drink large amounts water. From there on it is very much downhill; birds lose excessive body weight and generally are dead within 12 to 24 hours from the first signs. No matter what medicines are given nothing appears to work and this is common within the other five lofts. I myself have tried Strike, Orego Stim, White Sesqui, Amoxycare, Baytril, Ad Herb, Natural Yogurt, Osmond’s Electrolytes and I’m afraid all without any success Joe. At present West Lothian Federation are not racing and have birds away for testing but I do feel working with and seeing this virus first hand that we will hear more of it in the coming weeks. I will try and keep you up to date for your column should we receive definite feedback on what this is as the prelims have not come up with anything as such - yours Neil’. Well I wrote to Bilco regarding Neil and his fellow fanciers' predicament and Bill wrote back saying: ‘Sounds like Circovirus; if birds are dying it is not Young bird sickness. As far as I know there is no cure, but I had something similar some years ago and I used one teaspoon of Tiamutin 12.5% in the drinker every day for a week and this shifted it’. I have passed this onto Neil and let's hope it helps him out and this information may be of use to other fanciers who have similar problems. I am more than grateful for going out of your way to try and obtain help in this problem which is increasing as every day that passes I am almost certain that this is Circovirus as I was on Sunday when I e-mailed you and can assure you that I will today try and source this product that Bilco has used. My daughter Beth gave me Vet’s Tips for Fanciers book for Christmas and I have tried to contacted Dr Zsolt Talaber, editor of this excellent book, asking permission to quote from an article written by Pascal Lanneau on Circovirus and what is its influence on the vaccination against paramyxovirus on pages 87 to 90 in the book. Dr Lanneau wrote, ‘For a few years now, circovirus has represented a new threat to our young pigeons, less than a year old, especially those less than 4 months old, are highly susceptible to circovirus infection. Transmission; For the moment the mode of infection is not very clear, but the circovirus probably spreads through the droppings, perhaps also via food or water that is infected, or maybe through inhalation. Transmission via the egg is probably also possible; recent literature suggests the possibility of such transovarian spread, as the virus has been observed in newly hatched youngsters. Damage Once a pigeon is infected, the circovirus will especially attack those organs that are very important for building up resistance. (These are called the lymphoid organs, such as the thymus, the spleen, bone marrow, Bursa of Fabricius etc.) Because these organs are damaged, the pigeons are not capable of good, valuable resistance, even against the most common and ‘harmless’ infections, and it is possible that they will fail to build up any immunity’. Symptoms; Young pigeons in the nest that become infected will become thinner and perhaps die. Symptoms such as lethargy, no appetite, becoming thinner, diarrhoea, respiratory problems and decreasing performances are very common with this disease. Sometimes the feathers do not grow as they should but there are also plenty of infections that are without any signs. Diagnosis; Formerly it was only possible to diagnose this disease after an autopsy on a pigeon by means of a PCR test on internal organs such as the Bursa of Fabricius, but now it is also possible to have a PCR test done on the droppings of the pigeons. Treatment and Prevention; At this moment, it is not possible to cure or to attack the virus itself by means of any medication. On the other hand, in times of infection with circovirus, it is very important to treat secondary infections; these can be trichomoniasis, coccidiosis, paratyphoid, adenoviruses, fungi, etc. VACCINATIN IS NOT AVAILABLE AT THIS MOMENT Protection is difficult, and should focus especially on prevention, Prevention your young pigeons from having contact with the virus means being hygienic, and to this end it is very important to keep the new pigeons for a while in quarantine. Unfortunately, sometimes even strict hygienic measures and isolation cannot prevent this infection. Currently, circovirus is far too widespread, and according to European researchers, may be carried by hens symptom-free, and thus its transmission through the egg goes unnoticed in almost all instances. The circovirus is very stable in the environment, e.g. it can resist a temperature of even 75 C for 15 minutes. This means that disinfecting a loft against circovirus is a very hard job to do. All this is important for the paramyxo-vaccination; the virus will especially attack all those organs that are very important for building up good and strong immunity. If this immunity fails, pigeon can die due to some banal infection. But this also means that pigeons, after an infection with circovirus, cannot build up strong immunity after a vaccination!! Suppose you vaccinate you pigeons against paramyxovirus (PMV), but at that moment your pigeons are already infected with the circovirus. After the vaccination, the pigeons are not able to build up immunity as they should, because the organs that are responsible for this are damaged and do not work properly, not due to the vaccine or the method of vaccination, but because there was an infection with circovirus at that moment. To prevent all this it is much better to vaccinate young birds against paramyxovirus as soon as possible; this means when the youngsters are 3 weeks old (when the birds are weaned) In this way we can provide some immunity to PMV before the youngsters are exposed to circovirus. Experience has shown that pigeons which are vaccinated against paramyxovirus very early seem also to have a greater resistance e.g. to adenovirus’s There is of course no certainty you will not have any problems with all the other diseases, but we all see a very positive effect on the immunity of the pigeons if they have been vaccinated when they were very young. Vaccinating before three weeks of age is of NO use because during that period the youngsters receive maternal immunity from the parents (through the egg and crop milk) because you vaccinate at the age of 3 weeks, this means you cannot vaccinate at the same time against pox (nor with bivalent vaccines, paramyxo and pox). To build up much resistance against pox it is necessary that the pigeons be at least 6 weeks old.'
The above was written by Dr Pascal Lanneau from Belgium and I take no credit for any of the above, however I feel that this extract from this wonderful book will allow me to help my fellow fanciers who have this problem with their pigeons. It seems to me that once these people had vaccinated their youngsters the problems started. Neil Redmond wrote back saying, ‘Thanks Joe for your help, if there were more people like yourself within our sport we would be a very much a better organisation. I will let you know the outcome here in West Lothian Federation but I do strongly feel we are not alone. Thanks once again Joe, yours Neil’. SHU on Line "While talking to Linda Brooks, the SHU secretary, she informed me that they have the new type of transfer form on the SHU web site. Fanciers can now down load this form fill it in and add their email address and SHU loft number. Have the vendor sign the form as well as the new owner and send it back to the SHU offices along with their £1.50 transfer fee. If both fanciers are on email then no need to send stamps and Linda will forward the form back to the fanciers by email. This can then be kept in each fanciers own ‘Folder’ and they will have these transfers on file and can view them at the click of a button. It is the same with stray reports all strays can be reported via the web site. All you have to do is give the office your name; SHU Loft Number; and email address and Linda will add your details onto the data base. Do this either by post or by email to www.enquiries@shuonline.co.uk If you wish to download a transfer form or any of the other forms issued by the office just have a look at the documents on the SHU web site on www.shuonline.co.uk Apparently many of you have already provided your email details and Linda tells me that those already on her database will receive communications by email from now on unless they intimate otherwise. Please also remember that if you change you email address you must let the office know! To report any stray pigeons online (not only SHU's) please log on to the website on www.shuonline.co.uk where there is an easy to follow process to enter details into the Windows provided. This may suit those of you who can't ring the union during office hours. Also check out the photos sent in by members being harassed by sparrow hawks, we are still hopeful that Mike Russell, Environment Minister, will help us find a solution soon and discussions continue to this end. RESULTS Kennoway Homing Society news from Alex Wight who tells us that from the Leicester race the first of the Fife federation open races this turned out to be a very strange race indeed. The birds were liberated at 08:00:00 into no wind, and cleared within minutes it was a glorious day for the birds arriving home when they eventually did. Jock Scott who has his birds doing a fantastic job for him was 1st to time in at 14:18:18. His bird was Sweep (nicknamed because he kept on lifting the weekly sweep money) whois a Vandebeele bought from Red Star lofts along with its partner who is also doing well. You have already read about this bird in earlier races, and now he has done it when it matters most. Jock has claimed yet another 1st open federation which is a great achievement. Sweep is a 2 year old widowhood cock that has gained the following positions: Eastbourne 46th open 17th region in the national and also 8th open and 7th section Fife federation. From Maidstone he has won 77th open 2nd region and also 2nd open as well as 1st section in the Fife federation. He was 1st federation from Wakefield as a yearling and has had a club 2nd this year with many minor federation positions up till now. Henow tops it all off with a 1st open from Leicester all the club members would like to send our congratulations to Jock. Norrie Smith claimed 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 9th club, and was 2nd open toJock in the Federation he had a great race. The bird in second place was a 1/2 brother to his 2006 Maidstone 1st open Fife federationwinner which was crossed with a Mick McMurchie. This yearling cockis on the widowhood and has won a 1st club as a young bird, and was 2nd in the 3-bird club from Otterburn this year. Third position also goes to Norrie this time with a 2 year old widowhood cock which is a pure Mick McMurchie bloodlines, this bird has previously won 1st club and 3rd federation, once again Joe can we send our congratulations to Norrie on another successful race. There was a lot of scratching of heads about this race Joe on how it all unfolded with only a hand full of birds coming through early then a gap of about 20 minutes or so before the rest started to make an appearance before drying up again. (I would think that this leading batch caught up with some of the tail enders of a convoy liberated before the federation, with the bulk of the convoy arriving as you say Alex 20 minutes behind the winners) There were reports of quite a few empty perches on the night and not many birds returning on the Sunday, just hope they work their way home. On a personal note I maintained my 100% record with 3 out of 3 and done not too bad in the club as well, justglad to bepartof it all my thanks to Alex for his news and so promptly after the race well done to the Kennoway lads on topping the federation. This was our first federation open race from Peterborough Joe and John Bird kept up his fantastic season with another 1st and 2nd club which translated to 1st and 2nd federation also. The winning pigeon is John's good 5 year old blue cock who has been a fine servant over the years. He is bred from a sister of Bits n Pieces and has won tickets in federation and national races previously including 18th open SNFC Newbury last season. He was in the first 3 of the federation earlier this season and it was no surprise to anyone in the club when he won this week. If anyone has a pigeon to beat him next week in SNFC Newbury they'll be taking a high position! John's 2nd placed bird was a yearling who has already featured in these reports having been 2nd club, 2nd federation beaten by a loft mate earlier this year at Thirsk, he is Soontjen bred from Frank Sheader stock. They way John is going it will be no surprise if this cock turns his second places intoa 1st in the next couple of weeks. Lost Pigeons I have received a couple of phone calls with non fanciers reporting dead pigeons the first was Mr Roberts from Berwick on Tweed who used to race pigeons in Lesmahagow in Lanarkshire he found a dead bird which looked like a red pied ring number SU 07 A 5504 in what he thought was a peregrine nest as it had pieces of rabbit skin as well. If the owner of the pigeon would like to phone and thank Mr Roberts his number is 01289 330510. The second dead bird reported is going to be a bit of a puzzle to solve, David Peel from County Durham phoned with the details of a chequer hen SU 07 N????3 the ring had been squashed as the poor bird had been run over. This bird had a yellow rubber ring 5847 on its other leg and it also had a grey marker ring on the leg with the rubber on (no phone number just a plane marker ring) If anyone recognises this as their pigeon can they contact David on 0191 581 4629. My thanks to both gentlemen for taking the time to go out of there way to report these birds one of them went on the internet to obtain my phone number so speaks volumes that they tried to help out fanciers in this way. This week's Photos
