EAST CLEVELAND FEDERATION

by Keith Simpson

SELBY, MANSFIELD & NEWARK REPORTS

First Five In The Fed For Chapman, Sons & Swinburne

The Brotton 6 Bird Club sent to the Selby Open race on Saturday 30th March, Frank Reilly & son Wayne the Clubs top loft in 2007 took first blood, with the winner being a 2003 bred Janssen Van Den Bosche cross hen. Dave Wilson netted 2nd and 4th with the blue card going to a cheq pied Van Wil Do Son cock; and the yellow was potted by a blue Gaby Vandenabeele cock. Ricky Cush was in 3rd with a Gevaert Van Schoorisse x Soontjen, both parents were bred by Trevor Cruxon of Bridlington. Les Cropper filled a couple of caskets to notch up 5th and 6th.

The Up North Combine's first official race of the 2008 racing season got underway on Saturday 5th April, when the East Cleveland Federations 70 members entry of 1,676 birds were liberated at Selby at 10.15am into a cold North West wind. Chief convoyer Steve Profitt liberated the usual 6 groups in 2 cuts, there was a few birds still missing on dark with fanciers getting birds reported in different areas that included Ireland. What with the very poor weather we have suffered in the lead up to the first race a number of members gave the first race of the season a miss. It was surprising to see so many flocks on the coast especially flying into a North West wind. Alistair McLeod of Billingham 2y blue hen gave a victory salute as she flew over Skinningrove then calmly put her hood back up and went on her way. Alistair has flown a very good Pigeon for a number of years now with his birds putting together a string of top performances to win both Club and Fed averages.

Now onto the results starting at Skelton Green where fourteen members sent 331 birds, the loft of Bill Chapman, sons Steve, Colin & (the late) Tommy Swinburne certenly had their birds right for the first race of the new season after timing no fewer than five birds in the space of 28-seconds to win a absolutely outstanding 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Club, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Fed with top vels of 1247, 1246, 1245, 1240 and 1239. I was informed that all five birds broke a flock together and what a fantastic sight it must have been, I doubt anyone could have even dreamed of that coming true. First to be timed was a 3y dark Wildemeersch widowhood cock who is a previous winner, the blue was chalked up by a 4y dark Wildemeersch widowhood cock that topped the Fed in 2006 and is also the brother to the winner. In cell three for Bill, Colin & Steve was a yearling blue flipey widowhood cock bred by Lister Bros & Pearce of Stockton fame. The yellow was netted by a 1y Steve ‘Tess’ Collinson bred cheq widowhood hen, and this was followed by a 2007-bred blue Wildemeersch widowhood hen who is the dtr of the lads 1st UNC Folkestone National winner. The clocking did not stop there for a 1y cheq De Klak x Wildemeersch hen recording 1179 took 9th Fed and another yearling making 1159 notched up 14th Fed to round off a fantastic loft performance. The Fed has seen a number of brillient loft performances achieve some awesome results but to win the first-five Fed positions has got to be a record. Congratulations to Bill, Steve & Colin for what can only describe a once in a lifetime loft performance at Federation level, a performance that was achieved against star-studded fanciers. Roche, Terry & Daniel Bennison & Tich Crame clocked a 2y doing 1159 to chalk up 13th Fed.

The top performing Colin, Bill & Steve Chapman winning 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th and 14th Fed Selby, 1st and 9th Fed Newark.

Ten Skinningrove members sent 241 birds to see the loft of B & K Simpson and loft helper Gor-Gor filled a couple of thimbles to win 1st and 3rd.  The red card was won by a yearling blue Louise Cooremans gift bird bred by good friend Bob Fenech of Epping fame, with a top vel of 1194 the hen went onto score 5th Fed. Second in the clock for Brian & Keith was a 1y blue Louise Cooremans hen doing 1154 to net 17th Fed. Both parents of the green card scorer were Bob Fenech gift birds with the sire being ‘A Few Bob’, the previous winner of 1st Club, 3rd Fed, 3rd Club, 5th Fed and 6th UNC, 3rd Club, 9th Fed, 4th Club, 7th Fed and 14th UNC, 16th Fed when beaten by 3 loftmates and 18th Fed (BBLM). The dam of Brian & Keith’s second timer ‘Bob’s Choice’ is the previous winner of 1st Club, 3rd Fed and 37th UNC, 2nd Club, 5th Fed, 3rd Club, 4th Fed (BBLM), 3rd Club, 10th Fed (BBLM), 4th Club, 6th Fed (BB2LM), 4th Club, 9th Fed and 13th UNC (BBLM), 5th Club, 16th Fed (BBLM), 5th Club (BBLM’s), 8th Fed (BBLM) 16th Fed, 138th UNC (BBLM) and 96th UNC when beaten by loftmates. Probably should have named the hen Beaten By Loftmates’. Sayers Bros, Dave, Brian, Kenny and loft helper Richard timed three birds to lift 2nd, 4th and 6th with the blue card going to a 2y cheq Van Winkle that had a 3rd in 2007; with a vel of 1165 the cock went onto net 11th Fed. The yellow card was awarded to a 2y dark Janssen cock making 1153 to pocket 18th Fed, and this was followed by a cheq flipey cock that is nestmate to the yellow card potter. Mike Prokopowicz son Lee & Ewens timed a yearling pied cock bred by Bowers Son & Wilson for the Fed breeder/buyer to notch up 5th spot.

Blue Louis Cooremans hen winning 1st Club and 6th Fed for B & K Simpson.

Moving onto Brotton H/S where retired Scaffolder Mick Smithies made a good start after filling no fewer than three chambers to win 1st, 2nd and 4th from an eight-members entry of 192 birds. Pole position was won by a yearling blue Van Loon cock recording 1186 to score a useful 7th Fed, second in the clock came a 2y blue Van Loon cock making 1166 to pocket 10th Fed. Mick’s third timer was a 1y Roland Janssen mealy cock, as I have said before Mick has flown a consistent old bird in the past and I’m sure he will be up there amoungst them at the end. Reg Wilson, Ray Mole & Partners the top prize winners in the Club for the past 2 years were in 3rd spot after timing a 4y cheq flipey Fabry x Van De Weyer hen who won 1st Club, 7th Fed and 25th Section Bourges in 2007. Frank Reilly & son Wayne timed a couple of their entries to notch up 5th and 6th with their first timer being a dark cheq Marcelis x Soontjen cock, and this was followed by a cheq Soontjen cock.

Next stop is Marske & New Marske where the loft of Ian Everington & Franky timed three 2y 8-day sitting cocks to win 1st, 4th and 5th from a four members entry of 78 birds. Leading the way for last seasons top loft was a blue Rietvink cock who is the previous scorer of 3rd Club, with a top vel of 1181 the chart-topping cock went onto pocket a useful 8th Fed. The yellow was potted by a 2y cheq De Klak x Van Loon, and this was followed by a dark cheq Janssen. Geoff Bavin & Son were in the blue card position after clocking a yearling cheq Gevaert Van Schoorisse x Vandenabeele hen sent sitting 14-days. Jim Reed had a couple of birds in the clock to lift 3rd and 6th with the green being awarded to a 2y dark flipey Busschaert widowhood cock who is the previous winner of a 1st and 2nd Club. In cell two came a 1y blue widowhood cock.

George Skidmore & grandsons Mick & Liam Jackson won top spot at Lingdale where eight members entered 236 birds. Topping the Club charts for George, Mick & Liam was a yearling red Van De Weir widowhood cock bred by John Adams of Great Ayton; with a winning vel of 1161 the cock went onto lift a useful 12th Fed. These lads seem to be getting a team together now with a number of new introductions over the past couple of years. Graham Wattis & Son timed four birds to take 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th, with both the blue and green card scorers being 2y Stanghow Stuka roundabout cocks. The yellow was awarded to a 2y blue roundabout hen gift bird bred by Bill Heslop and this was followed by a blue w/f 2y Stanghow Stuka roundabout hen. Ian ‘Knocker’ Brown who won 1st Fed on the opening day of the 2007 season was in 5th with a 1y cheq hen.

Mr & Mrs Harry & Audrey Garbutt enjoyed a winning start at Liverton Mines after timing a couple of yearling Busschaerts to win 1st and 2nd Club from an eight members entry of 192 birds, with the red card winning cock beating his hen to record 1155 which was enough to chalk up 16th Fed. Its welcome into the frame for the new kids on the block Lancaster & Garbutt who net 3rd position with a 2007 Scotch rung Gaby Vandenabeele hen. It looks like it was a yearling day for Darren Lowe pockets 4th and 5th with a couple of 2007-bred birds; Chris Harris notched up 6th after clocking a Louella Gaby Vandenabeele. Shot Gun Kelly has gone into early season hiding after failing to feature in the result.

The Loftus partnership of Geoff Bowers, son Nicky & Mark ‘Sparky’ Wilson are aiming to work their way back to the top, this weeks performance of winning 1st and 2nd from a ten members entry of 241 birds has put them on their way to achieving their goal. Leading the way by 10-seconds was a Marcelis cock recording 1150 to chalk up 19th Fed, the blue card was awarded to a Soontjen hen bred by Frank Sheader on 1148 which was enough to pocket 21st Fed. Jan ‘ETS’ Bailes & Family were in 3rd spot with the green card scorer being a yearling cheq Janssen cock bred by D. Walker. Keith Arkless, son Matthew & John Mead clocked a blue pied Rudi Hendrix x Janssen roundabout hen that scored twice last year to take 4th position. Alan Tose & Dtr are in 5th with a blue pied Van Loon natural hen, and the newly formed partnership of Ray Welburn & Eric Maynard take 6th with a cheq Busschaert widowhood cock from Lentle & Platt.

Dave ‘Ralf’ Coates and scraper boy Popeye got off to a winning start at Boosbeck, the up and coming stars timed a couple of birds to win 1st and 2nd. The red card was won by a Janssen cock bred from the late Tony Calvert of Skelton stock; the blue was potted by a Janssen hen that again was bred out of Tony’s stock. The new formed partnership of Eric Leach, Mick Passmore & Terry Hopper took the next four positions, with the green being awarded to a blue Van Loon roundabout cock bred by Peter & Trevor Mitchell & Dave Drinkhall of Guisborough fame. In cell two came a Janssen x Van Loon flown on the roundabout system, with the yellow card scorer being bred out of former Boosbeck aces Bob Burton & Son bloodlines. The Tony Calvert, Mitchell & Drinkhall and Burton & Son family of Pigeons are having a big affect on the results at Boosbeck as a number of their birds won the honours for the two mentioned lofts in 2007.

W & S Ward of the Brotton 6 Bird Club start their season off in the winners’ enclosure, after the duo timed two birds to win 1st and 3rd. Leading the way for Bill and g’son Shaun was a yearling blue Van Loon x Van Reet widowhood hen. The green card was awarded to a 2007-bred blue pied Van Loon x Soontjen that is also flown on the widowhood system. Mr & Mrs John & Cathy Richardson are in the blue card position after timing a 1y blue pied Van Reet x Huybregt cock sent sitting. Merv Pearson & Son filled a couple of thimbles to lift 4th and 5th with the yellow being potted by a yearling gay pied cock bred by Barry & Eddie Gill of Ormesby; hard behind the gay pied cock came a yearling Thei Hanson cheq cock. Ovington, Laker, Brown & Cole take 6th position.

The birds were at Mansfield on Saturday 12th April where the 121 members entry of 3,013 birds were liberated at 9.15hrs in a South West wind, I don’t have to tell you that this was a much different race than we had from Selby the previous week. Like Selby a few birds went down with some being reported in Scotland, they get their heads down with the Border Pigeons and before they know where they are they’re miles from home and end up being sent back in a cardboard box.

Mr & Mrs John & Claire Harrison of Staithes receive this weeks congratulations after filling no fewer than three thimbles to win 1st, 2nd and 5th Club, with the winner going onto win 1st Fed with a pole position vel of 1758. The chart-topper was a 11-day sitting yearling blue pied Janssen cock bred out of a D. Mothersdale & son Steven of Whitby gift pair, this is the cocks first chalk and what a first chalk it turned out to be. John & Claire obtained the parents of their memorable winner in 2007, with the family originally being obtained from the Fountainhead Lofts. The family are known to excel from the longer distance races as Steven has won four times from the channel with a sister of John & Claire’s winner. The blue card was awarded to a 1y cheq Janssen cock sent sitting 12-days, and third in the clock for the overjoyed John & Claire was a yearling cheq Janssen cock sent sitting 8-days. Like the winner John & Claire’s second and third timers were both bred out of the Steven Mothersdale’s stock. John & Claire have not being in the game very long with them starting out with some 2005 latebreds, they were given 4 or 5 races as yearlings and then the duo concentrated on their ten young birds they had bred to be raced that year. John & Claire started their first full racing season in 2007 with birds obtained from Steven Mothersdale and the top Whitby loft of the late Stan Mallinson & son Robert. With John’s work commitments and Claire having to care for their baby time is very limited at the loft, their set up is a very small back garden loft with the birds trapping to sputniks. The 20 odd old birds are flown on the natural system with them having the freedom of an aviary through the day, because of the limited space John & Claire will be only flying ten youngsters again this season. Mr & Mrs Mike & Val Crooks timed a cheq pied hen to pocket 3rd with the green card scoring hen having 2x1st, 1x2nd Club and a 7th Fed to her credit. Not surprisingly the pied hen is very well bred with her sire being the ‘Ace 556’ who is responsible for Fed winners when paired to ‘Hakuna Matata’ and ‘Shadow’ who are both 1st UNC winning Soontjens for Mike & Val, the dam of the duo’s timer is ‘Chronicle Lass’ the mother of ‘Valerie’. Dave ‘Sparky’ Simpson is in 4th spot after clocking a 2y cheq pied cock who is a previous Selby winner.

John Harrison of Staithes holding his 1st Club and 1st Fed Mansfield winner.

Fourteen Brotton H/S members sent 365 birds; Bill Heslop and loft helper Les Rigg timed two birds to win 1st and 4th. With the red card being won by a Keon Minderhoud x M & D Evans Herman recording 1753 to score 2nd Fed, the yellow was taken by a M & D Evans Herman x J & M Walton Van Loon. Frank Reilly & son Wayne are in 2nd spot after timing a 2007-bred dark cheq Marcelis x Soontjen hen on 1719 to pocket 12th Fed. Mick Smithies clocked a couple of birds to net 3rd and 6th with the green going to a Van Loon x Vandenabeele late-bred cock making 1713 which was enough to pick up 14th Fed. Second in the clock for Mick came a 3y cheq Braspenning hen. Reg Wilson, Ray Mole & Partners timed a 2y blue pied Van De Weyer to take 5th position.

Sayers Bros were the winners at Skinningrove from a large entry of 541 birds; with Dave, Brian & Kenny and loft help Richard’s chart-topper being a 3y blue hen that won 1st Club Lillers in 2007. The winner bred out of the partnerships own stock recorded a top vel of 1749 that was enough to chalk up a well-earned 3rd Fed. White Bros were in 2nd spot after timing a yearling cheq Janssen x Busschaert hen making 1747 to pocket 4th Fed, both the parents of Malc & Stuart’s blue card potter were bred by Keith & Kenny Homer & Dave Williams of Grangetown fame. The sire of their timer is the previous scorer of 7th Fed young bird Selby and 8th Fed Lillers. B & K Simpson and Gor-Gor are in 3rd with a 2y blue pied Busschaert cock on 1743 to net 5th Fed, the cock who is a son of the ’25 Cock’ and ‘Young Dorothy’ is the previous scorer of 24th Fed Melton Mowbray when beaten by 2 loftmates and 2nd Club, 2nd Fed Melton Mowbray when beaten by a loftmate. Mr & Mrs Ian & Liz Purver filled a couple of thimbles to take 4th and 6th with the yellow going to a 2y blue cheq cock doing 1742 to lift 6th Fed. The sire is a son of B & K Simpson’s ’10 Cock’ and the dam is a dtr of Colin Brown’s ‘The Mean Machine‘ (‘001 Cock’). Second in the clock came a 2y M & D Evans lines Gaby Vandenabeele hen doing 1707 to notch up 20th Fed. The sire is a full brother to ‘Jenny’ 3rd UNC in 2007, while the dam is a full sister to ‘Gaby Girl’ who was 4th Europa one loft race in 2003 for M & D Evans. Brian ‘Brunks’ Laity clocked a 2y widowhood cock recording 1735 to chalk up 8th Fed.

Ian Harris & son Ian (Shot Gun Kelly) win the red card at Liverton Mines, with top spot being won by a 3y Bowers, Son & Wilson bloodlines Van Reet roundabout cock making 1735 to score 7th Fed. Darren Lowe filled a couple of chambers to lift 2nd and 6th with the blue card going to a 5y doing 1727 to pocket 10th Fed. Chris Harris clocked a couple of his Louella Gaby Vandenabeele family to take 3rd and 4th, while the new-formed partnership of Steve Harris & Geoff ‘Bubbles’ Winspear nets 5th place.

Moving to Loftus where the loft of Kev Locker, Kev Breckon & Chris Vasey hit top spot after timing a 2y blue Soontjen cock recording 1730 to lift 9th Fed. The chart-topper who won 1st Club and 5th Fed Huntingdon last year is half brother to the trio’s 1st UNC old bird Folkestone National Gold Medal winning ‘Just A Lad’ and two other Fed winners. The very laidback Ray Welburn & Eric Maynard move up the charts to pocket 2nd spot with the blue card scorer being a 2y Geerinckx x Huybregt. Derek ‘Seaweed’ Breckon & Danny McConnell filled a couple of chambers to take 3rd and 5th with the green being awarded to a cheq w/f cock of Rob Coney bloodlines. Second in the clock came a Pearson & Dransfield blue Busschaert cock. Bowers, Son & Wilson are in 4th place after timing a Marcelis x Huybregt. Alan Tose & Dtr notch up 6th after timing a natural yearling Staff Van Reet x Van Loon.

The late Jack Brown & Tony Hunt who gets help around the loft from his lovely wife Una timed two birds to win 1st and 6th at Marske & New Marske. Pole position was won by a 1y blue Rietvink x Van Loon widowhood cock doing 1721, which was enough to score 11th Fed. Tony & Una’s second timer was a 5y red widowhood cock of mixed Belgium bloodlines, the old cock is no stranger in the clock for he is the previous winner of 3x1st Clubs and numerous of other minor positions. Ian Everington & Franky enjoyed their second good clocking day after timing no fewer than four widowhood cocks to lift 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th. The blue card was awarded to a 2y cheq Rietvink making 1718 to net 13th Fed and the green was taken by a 2007-bred blue Van Loon on 1711 to pick up 16th Fed, with him notching up 5th Club as a young bird. In cell three came a 2y blue Rietvink cock, and the fourth bird to be timed was a 2y blue pied Soontjen x Busschaert who has a 2nd Club to his credit.

Barry ‘Smiler’ Kettlewell hit the heights at Lingdale after timing a couple of birds to win 1st and 3rd with the red card being won by a Bob & John Burton bred 3y blue cheq natural hen doing 1712 to chalk up 15th Fed. The chart-topping hen is no stranger in the winners’ enclosure for she is recording her third 1st Club. Nine-seconds behind the red card winner in the green card position came a 6y blue natural hen bred through Chapman, Sons & Swinburne. The old hen has been a trusted Pigeon for Barry for she has won for him a few times, if it had not being for being beaten by loftmates she would have had 7x1st Clubs in her pedigree. Barry has flown a good old bird at Lingdale in his time in the sport, with the lad winning the old bird inland average a few times, with that title also helping him on his way to being Lingdale’s top loft on a number of occasions. Ian ‘Knocker’ Brown filled three chambers (pity he never filled his diesel tank, if he had he would have got up the bank) to lift 2nd, 5th and 6th with the blue card going to a 2y Soontjen bred by John Adams through the sister of his good cock ‘Henry’, with a vel of 1710 18th Fed was lifted. Second in the clock was a yearling cheq pied hen and this was followed by a 2y red Huybregt x Van Reet hen. Graham Wattis & Son are in 4th with a 2y cheq Stanghow Stuka roundabout cock.

Bourges Specialists Mr & Mrs John & Cathy Richardson leads the way at the Brotton 6 Bird Club, with their chart-topper being a 2007-bred blue pied Van Reet x Huybregt cock who was 2nd last week. Frank Reilly & son Wayne clocked a 1y mealy Marcelis hen to pocket 2nd, and Ricky Cush timed a 2y blue Rees, Stone & McCormick x Mike & Val Crooks Flor Engels x Soontjen hen to chalk up 3rd. Les Cropper takes the yellow after timing a Chapman, Sons & Swinburne Wildemeersch, Chukka Ovington & Bob Laker, Merve Brown & Bill ‘Sacka’ Cole collect 5th while Merv Pearson & Son notch up 6th position.

Eric Leach, Mick Passmore & Terry Hopper hit the winners’ enclosure at Boosbeck by winning 1st and 5th with the red card being won by a Janssen roundabout hen bred by Mitchell & Drinkhall. Ralf Coates & Popeye filled three thimbles to pocket 2nd, 4th and 6th, with both the blue and yellow card scorers being awarded to Van Loon cocks bred by Knocker Brown. New Club secretary Don Smith & Dtr come into the frame in 3rd spot after clocking a Janssen hen bred by Bob Boag of Guisborough. Don is now enjoying his free time after retiring from work on 17th March of this year after completing almost 41 years service. Don started his career as a Fitter for the chemical giants ICI before becoming a Production Technician, the lad went onto work for the American company Huntsman when ICI sold out and ended his working career with the Saudi Arabian company Sabic who bought Huntsman out.

Next stop is Skelton Green where the partnership of Renty Shaw & Andy Wynn come good after timing three birds to win 1st, 2nd and 6th, with the winner being a blue Huybregt hen. Second in the clock was a blue Marcelis cock who was timed 7-seconds after his red card winning loftmate, in cell three for Renty & Andy came a blue Herman x Busschaert hen. Chapman, Sons & Swinburne follow up their outstanding Selby performance by timing three birds in the space of one minute to lift 3rd, 4th and 5th. The green was awarded to a previous winning 4y blue Wildemeersch cross hen and this was followed by a 2y blue pied Wildemeersch cross cock. In cell three was the 4y dark Wildemeersch cock that scored 2nd Fed Selby.

The weather forecast was not good for Saturday 19th April for the birds going to Melton Mowbray, a number of fanciers didn’t relish the thought of the birds spending a number of days in the baskets so they decided to give this weeks race a miss. As the worst of the weather was forecasted further down the Country the UNC had decided to try and get onto the Mansfield liberation site to avoid the poor weather but if that was not possible then Newark was going to be second choice. As luck would have it the poor weather further down the Country just so happened to be around the Newark race point, this saw the birds being held over on both Saturday and Sunday. Monday 21st brought a much better day with chief convoyer Steve Profitt getting the first birds away at 8.05hrs, with the East Cleveland Federations 99 members entry of 1,996 being liberated into a North East wind. A number of fanciers saw the forecast and decided they didn’t want their birds to spend a couple of days in the baskets. All credit to Steve Profitt and his team for keeping the birds in good condition while in their care at the race point, a number of fanciers over the years have said how bad a condition their birds were in when returning from a holdover race. Sometimes this is an excuse for them having a bad race, if the birds in the baskets are in good condition there is a good chance they will hold that condition when corn and water is offered to them. A holdover is no different to the birds going to a channel race, and by hell you don’t hear of any excuses then. There was mixed returns from the Monday race with some fanciers getting 100% not long after clock opening, where others suffered a couple of losses. We were one down but unfortunately that was reported killed by a Hawk in Scotland. White Bros had a Hawk attack one of their birds returning from the race, just as it was dropping in through the door the Hawk attacked but failed to get to grips with his victim.

Onto the third race where the Skelton Green loft of Chapman, Sons & Swinburne continue to hold the ace card after filling a couple of thimbles to win 1st and 3rd. Congratulations are in order for the second time in three race for Bill, Colin & Steve’s winner that recorded a top vel of 1325 win 1st Fed. With the pole position winner being a 2y cheq hen bred by Lister Bros & Pearce, the hen that is the previous winner of 1st Brotton H/S breeder/buyer and £2,000 prize money now has 3x1st Clubs to her credit. The green card was awarded to a yearling shallie hen achieving 1304 to chalk up 9th Fed, the hen is scoring for the second time in three races are netting 4th Fed Selby. Alan & David Wright the Clubs top loft in 2007 are in 2nd spot after timing a 2y cheq Busschaert hen recording 1306 to pocket 8th Fed. Johnny Hood the onetime loftman for Mick Bowden & Dave Drinkhall takes a well-earned 4th Club and 18th Fed on 1292, with the yellow card scorer being a yearling blue cock through Roche, Bennison & Crame. Johnny has got one over his old mucker Mick for the loft of Bowden Bros & Weldon timed two birds to lift 5th and 6th. With the first timer being a 3y Brian Long & Cox blue Busschaert cock making 1290 to net 19th Fed, second in the clock for Mick, Boss & John was a 5y blue cheq J & M Walton Van Loon cock.

Twelve Brotton H/S members sent 286 birds which sees Bill Heslop and loft helper Les Rigg record win number two off the belt, with the chart topper being a Gaby Vandenabeele bred by M & D Evans and making 1322 to score 2nd Fed. Reg Wilson, Ray Mole & Partners clocked a 3y blue Pepperman doing 1315 to chalk up 2nd Club and 4th Fed. Frank Reilly & son Wayne lift 3rd Club and 10th Fed on 1304 after timing a blue Marcelis yearling cock. Mick Smithies filled two chambers to take 4th and 6th Club, 11th and 15th Fed with vels of 1302 and 1298, the yellow was potted by a 2y Van Loon hen while Mick’s second timer was a yearling cheq Van Loon x Soontjen cock. Mick ‘Chukka’ Ovington, Bob Laker, Brown & Cole lift 5th Club and 13th Fed on 1301; the partnerships timer was a yearling Wildemeersch x Busschaert hen.

Ralf Coates & Popeye produced a 5-star performance at Boosbeck this week after filling no fewer than three cells to win a very impressive 1st, 2nd and 3rd Club, with their red card winner recording a pole position vel of 1316 which was enough to score 3rd Fed. The duo’s chart-topper was a yearling roundabout Janssen bred out of Tony Calvert stock, both the blue and green card potters were Knocker Brown Van Loons also flown on the roundabout system. The book on ‘Ralf’s Winning Ways’ will be on sale very soon, there will be no signed copies as he hasn’t got enough ink in his pen to give details on his timers age, colour or sex. Leach, Passmore & Hopper lift the next three positions with the yellow card going to a Janssen roundabout cock bred out of their Burton & Son stock.

Ian Harris & Shot Gun Kelly record their second win on the trot at Liverton Mines after timing three birds to win 1st, 4th and 5th, now I know why I have been handed the results. Top spot was won by a 2y Van Loon roundabout cock that has had a number of minor positions, with a vel of 1311 the chart-topping cock went onto score a well-earned 5th Fed. The yellow card was awarded to another 2y Van Loon roundabout who too has a few minor chalks to his credit. I bet Shot Gun Kelly’s chest was stuck out after this race; it was his dropped jaw that came to everyone’s attention after the Selby race. I have to be honest and say the lads not only fly a good Club Pigeon, their Fed performances have improved over the past couple of seasons. Mr & Mrs Harry & Audrey Garbutt timed two birds to net 2nd and 3rd with the blue card being awarded to a 3y Busschaert achieving 1302 to pot 12th Fed, the green was also taking by a Busschaert only this time it was a 2y. Derek ‘Jocky’ Barrett picked up 6th place.

Ian ‘Knocker’ Brown tops the Lingdale charts from a thirteen members entry of 225 birds, with the red card being won by a 2y cheq hen bred by Steve & Sheila Trattles of Loftus. The hen is recording her second win for she won 1st Club, 1st Fed and 1st Section Selby on the opening day of the 2007 season. Graham Wattis & Son timed a couple of flying to the perch 2y Stanghow Stuka cocks to lift 3rd and 5th. Skidmore & Grandsons take 3rd and 5th with the green being awarded to a flying to the perch 2y cheq hen of Frank & Wayne Reilly bloodlines. Second in the clock for George, Mick & Liam was a 1y slatey hen, the flying to the perch timer scored well as a youngster. Keith ‘Tash’ Welford notched up 6th with a 4y cock.

Jim Reed hits winning form at Marske & New Marske after filling three cells to win 1st, 3rd and 5th, leading the way was a 1y dark cheq Busschaert widowhood cock recording 1307 to score well-earned 7th Fed. Jim’s second and third timers were both yearling blue Wildemeersch widowhood cocks. Ian Everington & Franky timed two yearlings to lift 2nd and 4th with the blue card going to a blue flipey Meldart cock sent chipping eggs, the cock who scored a 3rd as a young bird achieved a vel of 1296 to notch up 16th Fed. The duo’s yellow card potter was a dark Gaby Vandenabeele widowhood cock. Brown & Hunt were in 6th with Tony’s timer being a 1y blue Rietvink x Van Loon widowhood cock.

Mike Prokopowicz, son Lee & Ewens filled to chambers at Skinningrove to win 1st and 5th from a ten members entry of 262 birds. The red card was won by a 2y Soontjen x Van Reet roundabout cock doing 1298 to chalk up 14th Fed, the winner who is the previous scorer of 25th Fed Selby is bred through Kevin Lawson x Homer & Williams bloodlines. Second in the clock for Mike & Lee was a 2y Soontjen cock bred by Nuttall Bros, with the cock being the previous potter of 5th Club, 11th Fed Maidstone National. Mike & Lee were one of the fanciers who had 100% returns, they had 19 out of their 20 on clock strike and the other one was there when Lee returned after clocking opening. Sayers Bros had a good clocking day after timing three birds to lift 2nd, 3rd and 6th with the blue card scorer making 1290 to collect 20th Fed. White Bros timed a 3y blue Ferry Van Loo/Busschaert x Soontjen hen to pocket the yellow, with the hen having a 13th, 19th, 22nd and 40th Fed to her credit.

Keith Arkless, son Matthew & John Mead shook the foundations at Loftus after timing three birds to win 1st, 2nd and 5th, pole position was won by a yearling blue pied Van Loon widowhood hen bred by Terry Craggs of Sunderland, the hen recorded 1295 which was enough to lift 17th Fed. In cell two came a 1y schalie cheq Janssen widowhood hen bred out of Herman Beverdam stock, third in the clock came a cheq Terry Craggs x Huybregt widowhood cock that won 1st Club young bird Maidstone National in 2005. Bowers, Son & Wilson clocked a blue Huybregt roundabout hen to pocket the green, and Alan Tose & Dtr took 4th after timing a 2y blue Van Loon roundabout cock. Ray Welburn & Eric Maynard are in the frame again after clocking a blue w/f Soontjen widowhood cock to notch up 6th position.

The party poppers were out once the news came through that the right honourable Vic Garbutt topped the Brotton 6 Bird Club charts, with the red card winner being a yearling blue pure Van Garbo roundabout hen. This win will have cheered Vic the Clubs highest points scorer without a win in 2007 up no end, he will have probably called at the Chinese take-away for a mixed grill and also ordered a ticket for the Clubs 2008 prize presentation evening. Frank Reilly & son Wayne were in the blue card position with a mealy Marcelis cock, and Les Cropper netted the green with a blue pied Bowers, Son & Wilson Huybregt x Terry Callan Van Loon hen. Mr & Mrs John & Cathy Richardson chalked up 4th with a Gaby Vandenabeele cock bred by Andrew Lawley of Ellesmere. Les Rees, Brian Stone & Brian McCormick were in 5th place, and the loft of Ovington, Laker, Brown & Cole pick up 6th with a Busschaert x Wildemeersch.

Brotton 6 Bird Club's Vic Garbutt winning 1st Club Newark.

It was a very close finish down at Staithes where Dean Ward won the honours after timing a couple of his roundabout team to win 1st and 3rd. Leading the way for young Dean was a blue pied Van Reet hen bred out of stock obtained from Vic Emberson & Son, while the green was netted by a cheq pied Van Loon hen bred by former Clubmate Brian Clennan. Mr & Mrs Mike & Val Crooks were in 2nd spot with the same hen that chalked up 3rd Club Mansfield.
