National Flying Club

Report 2005/02

Race Results Statistics

The National Flying Club comprises fanciers flying from all parts of England and has 12 Sections (A-L) operating with the Open result. As you might imagine the wind and drag are key drivers in any Open result and whilst the underlying quality of Fanciers does not vary between sections it has to recognised that Section D to the West and H to the East often find themselves trying to climb a very greasy pole in order to gain high positions in the Open. That’s not to say for that members in those Sections can’t win the Open … it is just statistically less likely.

I’ve been ferreting around the past seven years’ results in an attempt to identify merit across all Sections. I’ve started by producing a table of those Members who have achieved the most top 100 Open positions:-

The above list therefore comprises the most prolific scorers in the National Flying Club … it is these names you see the most often towards the top of the sheet. I’ll resist any temptation to comment on the league table and let the statistics speak for themselves. However please don’t make what would perhaps be an incorrect assumption that these fanciers owe their position in the table only due to sending big teams … because some in the list fly only as many pigeons as I do. The simple fact is that I too could send a big team but sending all my rubbish to a race gets no better reward than sending just a small selection of my rubbish. What these fanciers have in abundance is quality in depth.

In recognition of regional variations including wind and drag I then went on to analyse Section performances, identifying Members who repeatedly score in the Top 10 of their Section:-

Now it’s absolutely right to recognise that these Section statistics are weighted in favour of Sections sending less pigeons … basically that means that it’s statistically much harder to win a top 10 position in Section E (which sends the most pigeons) than in any other. So in order to ‘balance’ these performances I then did another analysis this time identifying Members achieving positions in the top 2.5% segment of their Section rather than the Top 10 velocities:-

Of all the tables printed above this last one is perhaps the most informative as the lumps and bumps of the Open result are effectively eliminated.

Trawling through the NFC’s database really has been an educational experience for me as I’m sure it would be for anyone else. What it does is blow anecdote and hearsay out of the water to reveal the true top performers.
