NORFOLK & SUFFOLK

with Trevor (White Feather) Harris

My racing

Well, I have received quite a few phone call telling me not to give up the sport. I will ignore the few diehard so-called fanciers who told me to go head and leave. I will say this, the situation has not been resolved.

Now to racing. No wins so far this year but still a long way to go. I can assure that will change by the end of the season so watch out all of you who are flying against me. When someone enters anything - a quiz, a pigeon race etc their intention is to win and not lose, otherwise why bother?.

To all scribes - please send photos of club members to me. They don’t have to be winners.

Charlie and his babe - a future National winner?

 Oulton Broad

Sorry to hear that you have been having a few problems. All I can say is that I would certainly miss your predictions, etc.

"Oulton Broad NR had their latest race, on the 19th April, from Malton which is about 155 miles to most members and a new race point for us. 9/127 which were liberated at 8:00 into an East wind with overcast conditions over most of the route. The birds were in for a relatively hard fly and there were a few missing at stirke-off. The top spot was a battle between two of Lowestofts top NR fliers and taking 1st was ace club secretary Derek Bryant, on 1127, with a '06 blue Janssen cock. In 2nd, on 1119, was John "The Champ" Aldred with a '06 cheq Busschaert hen which was bred by Julian Rice and is a winner already for John. Taking 3rd was Derek Bryant, 1085, with a '06 cheq WF cock of Cattryssex lines

Oulton Broad NR were at Whitby, at 170 miles, on the 26th April where 9/119, which were liberated at 8:00 into a SW wind though there was certainly an easterly element to it at the home-end and certainly a bit warmer than the previous week. Members reported a strange race with returns a bit sporadic and a few missing at clock-strike.

Taking the top two positions, 1250 and 1228, were E Aldred & Sons with two widowhood cocks, the first an 04 bred cheq of Wildemeersch x van Reet lines, which is a previous prize-winner, followed by a yearling blue pied of Cooreman lines bred by Bob Fenech down in Epping. In 3rd, on 1155, was top club secretary Derek Bryant with a yearling red of Janssen lines. Lenny Norman won the second-bird nomination.

Oulton Broad NR had their latest race of the season from Whitley Bay, about 220 miles, on the 3rd May when 8/87 which were liberated at 7:30 into a S-SE wind. Members reported a strange race with a few missing at clock strike and some bad trapping, no doubt the East in the wind did not help, it certainly makes it hard work for the birds and seems to put them "on edge" when they return.

Taking the top three positions, on 1158,1140 and 1139, were E Aldred & Sons with three widowhood cocks, the first two were, a blue pied and cheq, yearlings of Cooreman lines bred by Bob Fenech down in Epping, followed by an 04  cheq of Wildemeersch x van reet lines which has been a prize-winner before.

Michael Harrod won the Nomination and had a good race with four birds in the top 10.

Hope all is going OK? You must almost be in the Channel racing season, not too long now for the Nationals, hope the birds are getting fitter, with a few more Section wins on the way."

Karen is a complete novice this is only her 2nd race the story is a stray mealy Jan Aarden cock landed in her garden and would not leave she gave it to a fancier to toss but it came back so she bought it a wendy house to live in. She was then given a Welsh stray hen to keep it company she reported both and was told she could keep them. This is how she started, she now has a small shed with a dozen birds sent three the first week all home but one injured sent two this week not an easy race but both home well done Karen. I hope this is of interest.
