"With Distance in Mind" Race 1 - CHATEAUDUN, 167 miles, 1050 birds in club. Liberated at 09.32 in a North West wind quickly turning to a strong North East with the weather being very overcast with the sun not breaking through until 4pm. So by no means was this an easy race and we have to be pleased with our returns as down our club the word being used was “catastrophe”. Today was the Barcelona team's 1st race and it really was a sticky one with the losses down at our club quite high. We were also due to race from Angouleme yesterday but they held the birds. We thought we would get a lib today but again they held so the weather was more unpredictable than anticipated. In race time we clocked 45 birds. We sent 99 birds from our team as we held some back which we felt weren't quite ready yet i.e late from training and there were a couple of birds that we did not send as they had come back from training and had grazed themselves on wires so obviously we would not put them out to a race. We clocked our first bird at 13.53. The birds have been coming in all day in ones and at this time they are still coming in. As I write this at 21.45, we are 30 missing but are quite confident of their return as they have been trained up really well in all directions. The birds look like they have only had a 20 mile toss; they were clapping and gliding and they really do look well. There are only 1 or 2 who are looking a bit sorry for themselves but for their first race some of these birds have flown their butts off to get home, some of them near on 12 hours. I will give you the overall official result when we have it, probably Tuesday as we have to wait for it to be put on the internet. Our race next week is Mantes 101 miles I`ll keep you posted. This is the result from the club for Chateaudun, the Barcelona Challenge team's FIRST race flying against experienced birds so we are extremely pleased. There were 1050 birds sent in the club and we took the following positions: 4th, 9th, 10th, 14th, 21st, 27th, 28th, 35th, 36th, 39th, 40th, 45th, 46th and 51st. This is the first time we have ever used ETS. You know we have the Bricon system and we are very impressed with it. This week's race is Mantes 101 miles. I`ll keep you all posted. Thank you all again, looking forward to this week's race.
