"With Distance in Mind"

LOU`S NEWS FROM FRANCE

Firstly hello again to you all. It has been a month since I wrote for you as it was a busy time getting all the pedigrees done for the “Barcelona Challenge“ squeaker sale. It was a good turnout with some 40 to 50 fanciers turning up for some outstanding youngsters. We hope they do you proud so for those of you that came and bought pigeons or those of you that just came thank-you, also a big thank-you to my cheeky friend Tony Cowan for being our auctioneer. We are able to tell you that the first lot of monies raised going into the pot for prize money is £1600, with more auctions to follow to add to the pot, so there will be some cash to race for as well as the possibilities of getting up in those Barcelona results. If we have favourable winds we really think we could win Barcelona from our loft location

We have about 160 youngsters in this year, that`s including reserve birds and the latest to bring their own birds across were the “Pheasant Pluckers” syndicate headed up by our good friend Bill Woodall of Dover.

Photo left to right: My John and Sophie-Lou, John Lane, Micky Pilcher, Geoff Preece, Mick Mitchell and front Bill Woodall.

Here is what the pluckers thought about the setup

Bill “silly plucker” Woodall: “Perferct what else can I say.”

Micky “pretty plucker” Pilcher“: A beautiful day, wonderful condition of the pigeons, very smart, very nice, the birds are superb, a lovely setup, I can`t fault it."

John “big plucker” Lane: “Excellent, good lofts, good company, good day.”

Geoff “virgin plucker” Preece: “Superb setup and location, easy to find off the motorway, superb hospitality, I have no problems putting birds here.”

Mick “hawk plucker” Mitchell: "Hospitality fantastic, set up perferct, condition of birds A1.”

So thank you boys, we really enjoyed having you over and look forward to your next visit. I know Bill and Geoff are busy planning another trip over soon, so thank you for your wonderful comments, it was totally our pleasure to have you.

We have the Barcelona yearlings out training up to 60 miles south and weather permitting we are training twice a day. We also included some trainers east and west of us so they really are getting a good knowledge of the local areas. With 120 birds out training we are really really pleased to tell you that we have only dropped 1 pigeon. For one loft racing we feel this is fantastic. They will be going into their first race this weekend the 8th June, Chateaudun approx 167 miles; 15th June Mantes approx 101 miles then Montesson approx 104 miles then a break for a week then Angouleme approx 350 miles then a week's break then St Junien approx 325 miles. Results will be on our website www.thebarcelonachallenge.com .

Francis Nolmans from Bricon came out to us on the 23rd May and spent some three hours showing us how the system works. I still needed a telephone lesson of some 45 minutes but I`ve got the hang of it now. Once we`ve done it a few times we will be fine. We have been using it for training so we are quite used to it now. It`s like anything you get electrical, once you`ve used it for a week or two you are fine with it.

The following morning after Francis had been, John was in the loft at the crack of dawn basketing up the birds to issue them with their electronic rings. There are 120 birds so it took quite some time to check their ring numbers off against their electronic rings but job done now until we do the youngsters.

We are still accepting youngsters with the pheasant pluckers sending some more from their syndicate. Paul Rennison sent some more across with his son Kevin who lives down near Alencon. Brian Sheppard, Steve Radcliffe, Alan Holdaway, the three musketeers from Brighton - Roger Eason, Roy Spencer and Gerry Symmonds.

On Sunday 25th May I drove down to Adinkerque to meet some friends of Gary Inkley's who kindly bought his birds over for him and we have spoken to John Tyerman today and there are some more birds Amtraxing their way down from Ireland
