The birds were liberated at 7.30am
Report by Pam Gladwin
1st. Open and Central Section. Mr J Davies & Son from Hackney.
Jimmy is 55 and has had pigeons all his life. He flew as partners with his Farther up to two years ago when he died of cancer. He still carried on racing at his mother’s house up until this year when she sadly died in February. He had to get rid of all his racing birds because he did not have access to the garden. Jimmy decided to give racing a rest for a year, but having had birds all his life it was very hard to be without them. He had a stock loft at his own house in Walthamstow. On the spur of the moment he went with his wife to Louella Lofts and bought 13 young birds just to keep his mind ticking over, just for a bit of sport as it were. Unfortunately the first young bird race he sent to he ended up with only four left. He was going to call it a day for the season but the pigeon bug got to him again and he decided to train these four birds and send them to the BICC. They have had three tosses from Brighton and a few from Basildon. The bird he got was a Louella Staff Van Reet, Blue cheq H. It is a darkness youngster sent unpaired. Unfortunately, He only had one cock and three hens to send. Jimmy’s garden is not very big and this is only the second time he has raced from there. He only fed these youngsters once a day gradually increasing the carbohydrates as the week progresses.

2nd. Open and Central Section P & L Gorringe from Brighton. Their Mealy Hen is a Louella Kirkpatrick sent racing to the perch. The henhas had two young bird races from 80 and 130 miles prior to going across the water, she will probably race the rest of the Young bird programme. As always, the pigeon from the BICC was in excellent condition on the return from the race. This is a Father, Son partnership, Paul has been racing pigeons for 35 years, and his son Luke started racing assoon as he could pick up a scraper. They race from there back garden and the Pigeons are fed as much as they want twice a day. Corn comes from Melvin Barton of Brighton. They would also like to thank Chris Mears for helping them train the pigeons while their vehicle was off the road.

He has been racing at his present address for ten years, before that he raced in partnership with his Dad and Brother. The young bird hen is of Soontjen bloodlines of Frank Sheader, which is now called (Eddie's Girl), as his Dad bred the young bird. The young bird was sent to the race after four Chelmsford’s with Browston flying club, approx 80 miles, Basingstoke with East Anglian fed, 150 miles, and St Albans with Norfolk and Suffolk 100 miles. The hen had been coming steady and was sent sitting 10 days and in good feather hopefully, she will go to the St Malo NFC race. Clayton would like to thank Keith for all of his help through the year and his dad for coming over and pointing him in the right direction, it was nice to have a good result after a quiet season. He wouldalso like to thank both Gorleston and Browston station secretaries Bob Hodger and Tony Batterbee for all the work they do for the clubs.

Micky came down to see us and brought me a lovely bunch of flowers; we had a chat and put the world to rights with a cup of tea, before I took his photo. He came armed with the breeding of this young Hen. The sire being a nine-year-old cock and the Dam is a seven year old. This pair has bred many winners, being half brother and sister. Both being bred from the Golden cock who is a full brother to “Beckham” first Combine and 4th. NFC amongst his many wins. A fantastic stock cock sire and Grandsire of many winners including “Baby Beckham” a champion race cock for the late Brian Long. Micky says he has five full brothers all bred this way. All have bred very good channel winners. They are all bred from direct J. L. N. Houben pigeons. Micky wants to thank Mike Greighton for all his help and advice over the years.

26th. Open and 6th. Central section P Abrook from Cowes.
17th. open and 5th. North section Roy Etherden from Lowestoft
The young cock bird was hatched in March and kept on the darkness system up until 21st June. Raced to the perch only.On sending to the race, it had cast its second flight.
The sire of the bird is a direct Jim Biss pigeon and the Dam was a gift pigeon from his very good friend John Barber of”Barber & Wilkinson" which in turn was bred from two direct Jim Biss pigeons.
Roy has been racing since 2008 only after being out of the sport for over 20 years, but being retired, when he became 70 years old the old pigeon bug got him again and he was keen to get back in the sport. When he last had pigeons he specialised in the short and middle distance races but this time he wanted to graduate to the extreme-distance i.e. Barcelona, but at 70 he thought you have not got enough years left to go to be able to achieve your ambition. Fortunately, we do not know how long we have to go, so he decided in 2008 to have a go at achieving his latest ambition, because if he didn't and lived to say 85 he would look back and say what an idiot he was for not going for it.
Getting back to the pigeon in question it has had every young bird race, flown with the Norfolk and Suffolk SRCC and has been very consistent but not actually winning. One ofthe reasons for sending this bird was that they had a hard race from St Albans and this bird was one of his first birds home and looked as fresh as a daisy on arrival as it did from Falaise, you would not have known it had been in a race by looking at it. Roy thinks that it has earned its perch for another year.
