***Something Special*** “GEORGE” our 7yo Vandenabeele x Soontjen cock,
a winner of 9 x 1st club and 2 x 1st fed,
winner of Bird of the year at club and federation level.
George was retired from racing at the end of this years’ Old Bird season, he only had the audacity to win 1st club, and 9th fed 1284 birds in his last ever race!!! His winning velocities have ranged from 1290 to 2068 ypm, club birdage in races he won averages out at 140. He won 1st Burton & South Derbyshire fed Bath 1295 birds vel 2068ypm, 1st fed Hullavington 2916 birds vel 1846 ypm, 2nd fed Frome 2417 birds, vel 2029, 3rd fed Yeovil 2353 birds, vel 1314 ypm, plus loads more club and fed prizes. Our loft lies in the middle of the Burton & South Derbyshire fed, so no advantage here with West or East Winds, Nose winds or tail winds, and definitely no drag.
The Vandenabeeles George was bred off are the cream, in 2007 we purchased 2 late breds off the Rugeley aces Mr. & Mrs C.Lycett & Sons, this pair bred 3 sons who all won, one of these brothers was “Portland Bill” a winner of 5 x 1st club, he won 21 prizes at club level. When we stooped rcing “Portland Bill” he was sold back to Mr & Mrs Lycett, that’s how much they treasure these bloodlines. The sire of “George” was also a winner on the road, he was named “Peg Leg”, due to a bad leg break ending his racing career, he won 1st club Portland in a cold NE wind 3 days after my Mum “Peggy” passed away, “Portland Bill” was 2nd club 5th fed the same race, we took the first 3in the club that day.
Back to the Vandenabeeles we purchased from the Lycetts, the cock was GB 2007 J 63108 Blue, his sire was “Merlin” a direct son off “Westkapelle” and “Band of Gold”. Merlin won1st Kingsdown,1st West Bay, 1st West bay, 1st Wincanton,4 x 2nd clubs and 2nd fed 2814 birds, 3rd fed 1462 birds, 5th fed 3,662 birds, 12th fed 2380 birds, 11th fed 6108 birds, and 25th open MCC Portland, plus many more prizes. Merlin was the highest price in the Entire Clearance Sale of Mrs C.Lycett & Son
Westkapelle was a direct son of Koen Minderhouds’“De Orleans winner” this 1993 cock was a winner of 1st champion pigeon middle distance, 1st champion General yearlings, 1st general old birds, 1st Orleans 752 birds, 1st 1339 birds and 1st 11,435 birds etc, and a superb breeder for M & D Evans, he also bred “Gareth Gates” for the Lycetts, he won 1st fed 5129 birds, 3rd fed 5663 birds and bird of the year Worcester fed, and West Midland region award winner
The mother of Merlin was none other than “Band of Gold” she won 1st NE section, 1st MNFC gold ring and 3rd open Picauville , 312 sent 2395 birds, and 17th open 690 sent 5004 birds for M & D Evans, then went on to be one of the top breeding hens in the M & D Evans stock lofts, breeding winners right up to and including National level.
The mother of 2007 J 63108 was “Perfect Girl” late bred in 2003, bred especially to pair to Gareth Gates in 2004. Their first daughter won 21st open MCC Portland, dropped with loftmate who won 9th open. She also won 11th section, 19th open in MCC Picauville gold ring. “Perfect Girl” was the best daughter off “Cassie” the Lycetts ever had. Perfect Girl was a daughter off “The Assassin and “Cassie”, who were off “Shadow”;”Ebony”; “Jester” and “Carrie”, no better lines anywhere?
Now to the original hen we purchased, GB 2007 J 63111 Blue Pied, her sire was “Jumping Jack Flash” GB 05 A 41744 bred by jack Walker, and one of the Lycetts top racing cocks. He won 1st Newton Abbott, 1st Lulworth, 1st Portsmouth, 1st Kingsdown, 1st fed Lulworth 1462b, 2nd fed Portsmouth 1560b, 3rd fed Kingsdown 2400b, plus many other prizes.
His sire was a direct son off “Armstrong” x “Miss Uno”, Armstrong was a direct son off “Godfather” winner of 1st St Ghislain 5449 birds, 1st Roye 4614 birds, 1st Nijvel 3510 birds, 2nd Roye 5029 birds, 2nd Roye 3931 birds, 2nd Roye 3111 birds 3rd Reims 3538 birds, and 1st National Ace pigeon Middle Distance Holland from 55,000 fanciers.
The mother of Jumping Jack Flash was Myrtle lofts “Diamond Spirit” a direct daughter of “Blue Diamond” x the sister of “Wittenbulk”. Blue Diamond was a son off the Wittenbulk x Sissi pairing.
The mother of 2007 J 63111 was “Playful” a full sister to “Bobby Dazzler”. Playful was Mike Lycetts favourite hen at the time, she was a daughter off “Gareth Gates” x “Pale Rider”. Bobby Dazzler won4 x 1st including 1st section, 1st open NMCC Yelverton, winning by close on 10 minutes and the fastest bird on the day from 7 organisations out of Yelverton, from approx 5000 birds!! You’ve read about Gareth Gates, but Pale Rider, what a pigeon. Everything she bred either won or bred winners whilst at the Lycetts, Pale Rider was a full sister to M & D Evans top breeding hen “Band of Gold”.Pale Rider bred “Donovan” West Midland Award winner 0-250 miles, and “Super Frank” winner of 1st Portland, 9th open MCC Portland, 1st Wincanton and Newbury etc.
Like I said, the best Vandenabeele lines about at the time. The original cock we purchased was lost around the loft in the first year, and the original hen was sold on to Northern Ireland. We only race to a 19 foot loft, 2 sections each holding 8 widow cocks, and one yb section. We have no stock facilities, that’s why we sold the hen to Ireland, she was just too good for a widow hen.
This hen 07J63111 is a full sister to “MATILDA” who bred “CHURCHILL” for McGimpsey Bros in Northern Ireland. In 2017 “CHURCHILL” is the CHAMPION OB of the NIPA and the CHAMPION OB of the IRISH REGION.Good blood never goes out of fashion.
The Soontjens we had were off Anslow Farrar & Son of Derby, they originated from Brian and Mavis Clayburn of Pontefract, they were one of the first UK fanciers to visit the lofts of Jos Soontjen. Anslow was winning out of turn with these birds in the Burton & South Derbyshire federation, his top bird at the time was “Buster”, he bred us a son off “Buster”, he went on to breed “The Maltster Cock” in 2003, this cock won numerous 1stincluding 2 x 1st fed, when we retired this cock we gave him to Anslow.
The mother of “George” is a daughter off “The Maltster Cock” unfortunately we had no pedigrees off Anslow, when your gifted birds like these, it didn’t seem right demanding paperwork. I do know that they were off Soontjens “Red Ring” and “Black Ring” cocks. Trust me, these Soontjens were good, we have one 7yo cock cock left, he’s a grandson of The Maltster cock, he also finished racing in 2017, he’ll be up for offers at a later date, when he has moulted through. He is a winner of multiple prizes. You don’t keep pigeons till 7yo unless they are good, very very good. Don’t let the fact that we have no pedigrees for the Soontjens deter you.
This is a class cock. Sure to please. Only retired in July we have no Stock loft.
