JIM EMERTON'S
ALL TIME TOP 10 SECTION K LOFTS IN THE NFC GRAND NATIONAL
No 1. Neil Bush of Amcotts. For consistent excellence since 1982, this gifted intellectual pigeon master has no equal. Flying a natural open loft system, historical statistics from the Pau, San Sebastian and Tarbes results demonstrate his peerless brilliance over 700 miles. Bush is a man who does not court extroversive fame and mainstream popularity - a lone star in the nebula of genius.
No 2. Brian Denney of Strensall. We know much of the image of this Tarbes genius, who enjoys a charmed life in pigeons. Brian is the epitome of patient dedication with a wonderful record with his inbred and line bred family at all distances to Tarbes 748 miles. His Open Tarbes results are truly spectacular - everyone should study his preparation methods to learn the mind of the marathon man. I would love to see him tackle Barcelona International. Brian is a charismatic role model in pigeons. Just try and emulate him at Tarbes - a really big ask!!!
No 3. Chris Gordon of Snydale. Chris is a powerful businessman, official, RPRA stalwart and great pigeon flyer at all distances. A former Tarbes record holder with Snydale Express, he is a shrewd and versatile man who loves to win. Aware of the value of genes, he is creating the Gordon strain with his brilliant Section K results and BBC performances up to 840 miles - a good candidate for best UK fancier!!!
No 4. Frank Cheetham of Yorkshire. Old Frank peppered the Pau Section K results with regularity. A little before my time, he was a source of inspiration for genius Brian Denney. By all accounts his birds were in the mix of Palamos 800 milers into the Malton area, where Mr Wales found fame. A pioneer then of marathon racing - ahead of his time.
No 5. Eric Fox & Son of Bakewell. Eric was a lovely old gentleman who dedicated his singular life to pigeons, forming his own strain. The genes are present now at Chris Gordon’s and others. A proper pigeon man with 4 x 1sts Section K from Pau 683 miles and 7th open. Eric is recalled with much respect and affection. We need more like this man now!!!
No 6. Shackleton & Son of Yorks. Old Shack, as local characters call him, has hit the ceiling with Pennine Heights winning 1st Open NFC Tarbes 740 plus miles in 2011 - an exemplary, unique performance. It is so so hard to do that!!! John Highley was very important in the bird’s perfect race preparation. This bird will scoop many awards and should produce a dynasty. An outbred bird, 2 of his grandparents are the famous Snydale Express and Snydale Prince. An historical, revered and magical race result.
No 7. Mr & Mrs Wright & Dtr of York. Jim was 2nd Open Pau in 1990 flying 734 miles with the lovely blue pied hen Anne’s Choice - the best 700 mile York result. Jim was a fastidious, perfectionist man. He sent a small team in great bodily condition from a small neat loft. On his retirement he gave me the champion, and she lived at Holtby. One of the pretty hens with 11 flights.
No. 8. Trevor Robinson of Patrington. Trevor, a dedicated ex-Para, has been 9th open Pau 700 plus miles and had 3 great birds in the top 5 four-race averages up to Tarbes. He is a good administrator, former boss, and is building a nice strain. His Marseilles BICC winner at 748 miles was life changing. A self-possessed man of distinction.
No. 9. Brian Riley of Wakefield. Brian was 8th open at Tarbes 724 miles. He is a rare individual character with stellar performances in marathons. He shows a great skill in individual bird preparation. He flew the peerless Riley’s Duchess - 1st Section K Pau and 2nd BICC Barcelona - an unmatched hen in Yorkshire. The stuff of folklore and legend.
No 10. Mick McGrevy & Son. Mick is a dedicated marathon enthusiast, NFC official and outstanding personality in Yorkshire. He is single minded in speech and in his approach to pigeons, with a good grasp of race conditioning. He has a 17th open Pau and many Section K positions to his name. Watch this partnership go at Barcelona.
About Jim Emerton:- ‘I love pigeons! I feel a special empathy with all birds and nature. Since 1976, I have been obsessive in my desire to create my own strain to perform at all distances and in this objective I have enjoyed success from 71 to 879 miles in the epic Barcelona International. Dax My Girl in 2004 and Barcelona Dream in 1995 were the longest flying birds I know of in the 2 European Internationals when clocked at Holtby, Yorkshire. I will help any fancier up the success ladder of pigeons, especially with birds of my origin. I have studied with a close eye the art and science of pigeon racing, and my feature articles have and do appear on the Internet and the BHW magazine, through which I hope fanciers will give thought to my ideas, perceptions, insights and experiences. I still develop the birds based on Dark Destiny and Daughter of Darkness. My abiding interest is the concept of UK marathon racing. My motto is think it, do it, mind above the material!!! My reflections are subjective and in no way indicative of absolute fact. Be lucky.’ Jim.
