LAURENT
STULENS

The
first thing that was pointed out when we went to see an excellent team
of pigeons is that Laurent is a wing theory fancier and over the years
has bred his pigeons based on that theory. Having
said that we handled a Black Krauth cock that had an exceptional eye and
would have taken some beating in any eye sign class. They are a powerful
racing type that we all look for in a quality pigeon.
One
thing you can be sure of is that if you are in Belgium then there are
plenty of lofts to visit, generally they should be by appointment. On
this particular trip we just called in because right there in perfect
sight across from our hotel was a loft and being a scribe we have to be
nosy. Because we were just on our way out to lunch we did not have the
camera with us so while I knocked on the door Elizabeth popped back into
the hotel and collected it so that a few more pictures could be added
to our articles. As this fancier answered the door we hit our first stumbling
block he could not speak a word of English, however in the good tradition
of fanciers travelling abroad that was soon overcome, when one of his
neighbours came to the rescue. Laurent them made a phone call and a fellow
fancier who was a regular visitor through his work to the UK came along
and did a fine job of interpreter.
Not
many fanciers in the UK will have heard the name Laurent Stulens but no
doubt the slightly older generation will have heard of the partnership
with his father. However Laurent has won well but because of the way that
publicity is done on the Continent there is little known of the modern
day Stulens racing performances. It was obvious that this was not an also
ran when it came to racing the pigeons because he pulled from a drawer
a pile of paper cuttings with a whole host of performances of himself
and his late father. We were also informed that in the last six years
prior to our visit this loft had won the Provincial 6 times and also a
semi National from Argenton plus a considerable amount of cards from the
local club. This club is a good one and has around 40 members competing
for the shorter distances but as the distance increases like all clubs
there are less competing members.
The
first thing that was pointed out when we went to see an excellent team
of pigeons is that Laurent is a wing theory fancier and over the years
has bred his pigeons based on that theory. Having said that we handled
a Black Krauth cock that had an exceptional eye and would have taken some
beating in any eye sign class. This family has been bred on the lines
of the old Black Krauths that were so successful in the UK in the late
60's and throughout the 70's and 80's. there were also the Janssens and
Desmet Mathjys both also being very good winning lines. What Laurent did
say was that the Krauths and Janssens are bred down from the originals
that were purchased in the mid 60's with no introductions since. Laurent
has also purchased pigeons over the last couple of years from the long
distance Champion of Belgium but at the time of our visit none had been
tried, even so Laurent is happy with the introductions and is confident
that they will do the job expected of them.
The
range of lofts are impressive with individual breeding pens for the stock
birds on the ground floor and the racing lofts above. There is plenty
of room for all the pigeons which is no doubt why they are racing so well
and I would have every confidence that they would win in the UK., based
on the fact that they are a very good type of pigeon. They are a powerful
racing type that we all look for in a quality pigeon. Because of the quality
housed we shall be visiting these lofts again in the near future to see
how the new introductions are compared to the established team that have
won for so long.
