“The Original” Around The Up North Combine

By Good Corn

I will start this week’s report with the North of England Homing Union Centenary 2 - Bird Brighton race where after a one-day holdover the 584 lofts of 36 Federations 1,128 birds were liberated at 5.50hrs on Sunday 9th June flying into a light variable to south-west wind. The Brotton H/S 7/14 partnership of Reg Wilson, Ray Mole & Partners clocked both their timers a 2y and a 5y to win a top-notch 1st and 7th East Cleveland Federation from a 29 members entry of 58 birds with vels of 1508 and 1456.1. With Reg & Ray's Fed topper winning the £1, £2 and £5 Fed Noms banking £170.00. W & S Ward netted 3rd Fed with a 3y on 1473 to lift 3rd £2 Fed Nom pocketing £12.80, Mr & Mrs Bob & Babs Moore chalked up 4th Federation with a yearling doing 1471, while Mr & Mrs Golly “Graham” & Linda Peirson, Tubby “Graham” Purver, Evo “Ian” Everington & Frankie Rowland claimed 11th Fed with a 1y on 1398. Onto Skinningrove 6/12 Stafford & Wilson notched up 2nd and 15th Fed on 1496 and 1351; while Brian “Brunks” Laity potted 8th Fed on 1449 with a yearling; with Sayers Bros taking 17th Fed on 1292. Eion Richardson of Skelton Green 4/8 clocked up 10th Fed with a 3y doing 1406 and he was followed by Bowden Bros Mick & Boss and loft helper Trevor Mitchell who timed a 2y on 1376 to take 12 Fed; and Des Williams & Roger Wall pocket 19th Fed with a yearling on 1227. Charlie Featherston with Eion Richardson the scorer of 10th Fed Brighton Centenary race

Onto the Teesside Federation where the man of the moment Ali “Mac” McLeod of Billingham T U H/S is stepping up the gas again this season, after winning 1st Up North Combine and the North of England Queens Cup Roye on the very same day as the Brighton race. Ali wins 1st Fed and the £5 Fed Nom pocketing £50 on 1495 which was enough to lift 39th Open winning £100 kindly donated by Vale of Derwent Social Club. I thought I had seen it all seeing Magicians pull rabbits out of hats but Ali beats that by pulling banknotes out of different events. Mac's Fed winner was a yearling blue Koen Minderhoud hen who won 1st Club, 2nd Fed Oakham as a young bird, the hen has really proved herself this year after taking 10th Fed Bubwith on the opening day of the new season when beaten by six loftmates and she followed that up two weeks later by winning 1st Club, 2nd Fed Newark Show Ground. Things got even better out of Oakham (2) when she won 1st Club, 1st Federation Oakham (2) and quickly followed that up by taking 4th Club, 7th Fed Chelmsford (1) when beaten by two loftmates that were 2nd and 3rd Club, 5th and 6th Fed. The blue hen is proving to be a bit of a handful this season with her achieving a number of top performances, no doubt we will be hearing more of her as the season goes on. The sire of the consistent hen was bred for stock from Ali's original Koen Minderhouds while the dam was direct of Mac's number one Gabby cock from T Fowler paired onto the mother of his top racing cocks “82” & “29”. Colin Atkinson timed a yearling blue cock on 1433 for 2nd Fed while Butto Bell & Weedall had both their entries a 2y blue cock and a yearling blue cock, on the clock to lift 7th and 10th Fed on 1103 and 977.  John Pledger had the first bird at Haverton Hill with John's timer being a 2y chequer cock achieving a vel of 1375 which was enough to score a very nice 3rd Federation. Stuart “Lewie” Lewis, Amber & Coby McCabe potted 5th Fed with a 1y blue hen doing 1297 and they were followed by Paul Gatley, Bob Harrod & son Dale who notched up 8th Fed with a 3y blue cock on 1074, while Nathan Bonar in his first full season after enjoying a brilliant 2018 young bird season claims 9th Fed with a 2018 bred blue hen making 1023.

The birds were at Huntingdon (1) on Saturday 15th June when the strings were cut on the East Cleveland Federation 46 members entry of 940 birds at 07.30 flying into a light south wind, the wind got very stronger with it turning to south-east which made the birds motor along which resulted in most members seeing the birds arrive earlier than they had expected. Starting at Skinningrove 10/266 where the loft of Tich Richards & Alice Marsay recorded their second win of the season after timing a yearling achieving a vel of 2012 to win a brilliant 1st Club, 2nd Fed. With Tich & grand/daughter Alice chart-topper being the nestmate to the duo's 1st Club, 1st Fed Oakham (2) winner when there were 1,632 birds competing. The winner through Steve & Sheila Trattles of Loftus contains a host of winners in its pedigree including “Peanuts” Tich & Alice 1st Up North Combine young bird Peterborough (sub Maidstone) National winner when there were 11,967 birds competing.

B & K Simpson timed no fewer than five of their widowhood team in the space of 17 seconds to score 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th Club, 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th and 10th Fed with vels of 2005.9, 2005.5, 2002.8, 2002.6 and 2001.8. With brothers Brian & Keith's blue card scorer being a home-bred yearling blue Dirk Van Den Bulck of good friend Bob Fenech of Norfolk fame bloodlines, with the sire being “Red 32” the previous scorer of 3rd Club, 3rd Fed. While the dam of the blue card potter is “36” the previous winner of 1st Club, 4th Fed, 4th Club, 9th Fed and a 19th Fed. The green card was awarded to a 2018 bred chequer Louis Cooreman cock who is out of a home-bred cock who has bred winners, while the dam is direct Louis Cooreman who has also bred winners. The yellow card was chalked up by a 1y mealy Dirk Van Den Bulck cock bred by Bob Fenech who wins the £5 Club Nom and he was followed by a blue Willy Jacobs cock, who is the son of a cock who has a 2nd Club, 2nd Fed, 4th Club, 4th Fed and a 18th Fed to his credit, while the dam of the blue cock is the previous scorer of 2nd Club, 8th Fed. Fifth on the clock for Brian & Keith was a previous scoring 3y dark Busschaert cock who is scoring for the second time this season after netting 2nd Club, 4th Fed Oakham (2). The sire of the dark cock has bred a 1st Federation winner, while his dam had bred 2 x 1st Federation winners when paired to two different cocks.

Stafford & Wilson timed a couple of birds to lift 8th and 9th Fed. While Mike Prokopowicz & son Lee had a single bird on the clock to notch up 13th Fed on 1974, with the lad’s timer who has a few minor Fed turns to his credit being a 3y blue cock bred by Wayne Doonan. White Bros Malc & Stuart potted 15th Fed on 1966 with a yearling blue Heremans Ceusters cock bred from a pair of Homer & Williams stock that is the same way bred as the duo's 1st Club, 6th Fed Chelmsford (2) winner. Mr & Mrs I & E Purver timed a couple of yearlings two seconds apart to pot 17th and 18th Fed on 1964 and 1963, with first on the clock for Ian & Liz was a blue Gaby Vandenabeele cock who is the son of a cock who is off the same sire as the duo's “Dream Girl” winner of 1st Up North Combine Reims from a convoy of 4,193 birds in 2017. While the dam of the timer is the “Temple Park Hen” of Stuart Knowles that Ian & Liz purchased at a North of England Homing Union Show sale, who bred a bird to win 1st Club, 1st Fed, 1st Section and 8th UNC Reims in 2018 out of an entry of 8,775 birds. Second on the clock was a blue cock off Peter Fox Syndicate Lofts whose sire is a son of “Amadeus” who is off “Di Caprio”, while the dam is a Marina Van Der Velde.

Onto Brotton H/S 8/181 where the loft of Reg Wilson, Ray Mole & Partners recorded their fifth Club win of the season after timing a 3y and a 2y to win 1st and  4th Club, with the red card winner who racked up a top vel of 1981 going onto chalk up 12th Fed. Club Secretary Terry Callan comes into the frame after timing a 2y bred by  Ali McLeod to pot 2nd Club. Mr & Mrs Golly & Linda Peirson, Tubby Purver, Evo  & Frankie Rowland notched up 3rd and 5th Club with a 2y and a yearling who took 6th Club Ypres, 5th Club, 23rd Fed Chelmsford (2) beaten by three loftmates that won 1st, 2nd and 4th Club, 1st, 2nd and 22nd Fed.

Onto Skelton Green 6/127 where the loft of Bill Chapman, sons Steve & Colin and the late Tommy Swinburne were the clear winner after timing a yearling blue Wildemeersch hen recording a top vel of 1973 to win 1st Club, 14th Fed. Bill, Colin & Steve also clocked a 3y chequer Soontjen hen to chalk up 3rd Club and round off a notable performance. The lads hard work has paid off for them this week, which is always good to see. The inform partnership of Bowden Bros Mick & Boss and loft helper Trevor Mitchell had no less than four of their squad on the clock to lift 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th Club with the blue card going to a 1y Syndicate Lofts Drum lines x Van Loon chequer cock, this is the cocks third 2nd Club this season. The lads other three timers were yearlings flown on the widowhood system with the first one a cock and the other two hens.

The loft of Kevin & Merv Brown & Sacker “Bill” Cole have hit winning form with the lads timing a couple of birds to win 1st and 5th Club at the Brotton 6 Bird Club 6/36, to record their second straight win. With the red card winning 3y chequer Van Osch x Veenstra hen knocking out a vel of 1965 to net 16th Fed. Tony Hunt recorded his second win of the season at Marske & New Marske 3/40 after filling a couple of chambers to win a very nice 1st and 2nd Club, 25th and 36th Fed. With both the red and blue card winner being 2016 bred Seppers/Van Gompel blue widowhood cocks, with the winner scoring numerous positions through his racing years, while the blue card potting cock is the previous winner of 1st Club, 11th Fed Peterborough in 2017 from a convoy of 1,408 birds and 1st Club, 12th Fed Oakham (4) in 2018 when there were 660 birds away.
