Mid Cheshire

The racing is now getting to the harder end of the season for old birds with plenty of channel races in the North West to have a go at whether National or Classic events. This has caused a few not compete in their local clubs and that was the case with the first channel race of the season for the Middlewich FC racing in the Mid Cheshire Fed when 3 of the 7 clubs did not enter any birds. However, these races are there to be won and the Mid Cheshire Fed saw 44 members sending 478 birds to Coutances when the red card went to N & S Harvey from the Wrinehill club. There are still quite a few who like the club races because they are also competing in the Three Counties Combine. The club then came back for a sprint race at Cheltenham between the channel races when 9 sent 124 that were liberated at 10.30am with the Mid Cheshire Fed when 65 members sent 909 birds. The red card went to W Wilson & Son who were also 6th fed with a vel of 1554ypm. The next two positions go to the lofts of Peter & Dawn Latham who are 2nd & 3rd club 9th & 10th Fed on 1547/1543ypm leaving 4th to Mark & Heather Smith clocking up 1540ypm.

The other local club being the Middlewich 5B had two races on the go the first from Frome when 17 sent 191 birds liberated at 13.30pm in a strong SWW. The red card plus 10th fed went to Peter & Dawn Latham with a 4yo blue chequer cock on 1894ypm. Mr & Mrs Dave Healey are getting them together are collect 2nd on 1881ypm ahead of Alan Groom 1844ypm and Ken Bosson & Son with a vel of 1834ypm. These were racing in the South West Cheshire Fed when 66 sent 870 birds that was topped by P & M Child from the Moulton club. The fed was also at Coutances when 33 entered 215 birds when T Wright topped the list by nearly 90ypm. The Middlewich 5B winners plus 2nd fed is Mr & Mrs Dave Healey with a yearling dark chequer hen of 1587ypm. The partnership was also 4th with a yearling chequer hen clocking up 1527ypm. 2nd & 4th go to Jimmy Smith recording vels of 1577/1514ypm the first being a yearling chequer cock. The 5B then went to Bath with the South West Cheshire Fed where 70 members entered 852 birds liberated at 10am in a west wind. W Wilson & Son are continuing with a good season taking 1st & 2nd in both the club and fed with a chequer and blue both cocks recording vels of 1567ypm both being 2yo, either one could have been the winner. 3rd & 4th club 5th & 9th fed go to Alan Woodcock with two cocks a 2yo chequer and 3yo dark grizzle on 1563/1561ypm.

In the Acton Bridge club race from Cheltenham where 5 sent 92 the first 4 positions in the club and fed go to Curtis-Wall-Lunt. First in the clock is a 2yo blue cock known as “Blue Denver” (see photo) who also won 4th Central Lancashire Combine 5,464 birds only beaten by 3 loft mates. 2nd is a chequer cock who has won before and is a g-son of the great racing and breeding cock “Grey Jem” 3rd is another 2yo chequer cock “De 617” a top racer being direct from their "Box 9 Pair" responsible for generations of winners. 4th is another 2yo cock “628” winner of 2 x 1st federations and again a g-son of the famous “Box 9 Pair” who must be one of the very best breeding pairs around. It was disappointing to see the NFC have such a bad race from Messac, these are the races many wait for all year.
