BURTON & SOUTH DERBYSHIRE FEDERATION

by Pete Wightman

DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND FROM MESSAC AND FROME PROVIDES PROBLEMS

SATURDAY JUNE 24TH SAW ANOTHER DOUBLE HEADER WEEKEND, THE THIRD ONE THIS SEASON, AND STILL ANCENIS TO COME, SURELY ONE TOO MANY? ALL IT DOES IS CREATE MORE WORK FOR CLUB AND FEDERATION OFFICIALS. PERSONALLY, I THINK THREE CHANNEL RACES IS PLENTY FOR OUR FED, WITH THE MIDLAND NATIONAL, NORTH MIDLAND AND NATIONAL FLYING CLUB ALSO HOLDING THEIR RACES, MEMBERS HAVEN’T GOT THE BIRDS TO ACCOMMODATE THEM ALL.

IT WAS A WEEKEND THAT PROVIDED A FEW PROBLEMS FOR THE FED AND ITS MEMBERS. FIRST OF ALL, THE MESSAC BIRDS WERE HELD OVER TILL THE SUNDAY, DUE TO POOR WEATHER IN FRANCE. THEN TRANSPORTERS COULD NOT GET ON TO THE FROME SITE AS ENTRANCES WERE BLOCKED OFF! NOBODY AT THE R.P.R.A. WERE INFORMED ABOUT ANY PROBLEMS AT FROME, HENCE NO FEDERATIONS WERE INFORMED. ALYS THEN TOOK OUR BIRDS TO BATH RACECOURSE, THANKS TO THE NORTH CHESHIRE FED DRIVER AND CONVOYER FOR THEIR ASSISTANCE.  AT LEAST OUR BIRDS WERE SETTLED AND WATERED NICE AND EARLY, BUT AGAIN, DUE TO POOR WEATHER IN THE AREA, A LIBERATION DID NOT TAKE PLACE UNTIL 2-00, BUT ONCE UP THEY MADE SHORT WORK OF THEIR JOURNEY HOME.  I KNOW SOME MEMBERS WANTED TO KNOW WHY WE DIDN’T TAKE THE BIRDS TO SOMEWHERE FURTHER LIKE YEOVIL, BUT LOOKING BACK AT THE DAY, WE HAD A LOT BETTER RACING THAN THE FEDS DID WHO WERE AT YEOVIL. THE BIRDS WERE PUT FIRST, AND A SETTLED TRANSPORTER WITH WATER ON HAS TO BE THE PRIORITY SURELY? JUST A PITY THE WEST WIND GOT UP AND ALOT OF BIRDS WENT WHIZZING PAST THEIR LOFTS UP THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE FED, BUT WE CAN’T HELP THE WIND AND WEATHER, WOULDN’T IT BE NICE IF WE COULD?
