BURTON & SOUTH DERBYSHIRE FEDERATION

by Pete Wightman

WEATHER PLAYS IT’S PART IN KINGSDOWN RACE, AS JONES & BATT TAKE 1ST FED.

WELL WHAT A WEEK WEATHER WISE LEADING UP TO THE KINGSDOWN (3) RACE ON SATURDAY JUNE 15TH, HEAVY RAIN AND LOW-PRESSURE LED TO FLOODING IN SOME PARTS OF THE UK, WITH THE INCLEMENT WEATHER SAT OVER THE MIDLANDS MOST OF THE WEEK.

SATURDAY PROVED TO BE A DIFFICULT DAY FOR OUR RACE CONTROLLER, POOR WEATHER AT KINGSDWON EARLY MORNING PREVENTED ANY LIBERATION, THE WEATHER DID THEN CLEAR UP WHICH ALLOWED THE FEDS ON SITE TO START LIBERATING AT 10-45, OUR BIRDS WERE LIBERATED AT 11-15 IN A STRONG S.S.W. WIND. WITH A STRONG WIND UP THEIR BACK SIDES WE WERE EXPECTING THE BIRDS TO MAKE LIGHT WORK OF THEIR JOURNEY HOME. BUT, SOMEWHERE EN ROUTE, AND DEFINITELY TOWARDS THE LATTER STAGES OF THEIR FLIGHT, OUR BIRDS HIT SOME OF THE HEAVY RAIN SHOWERS THAT PERSISTED THROUGHOUT THE AFTERNOON, AS IS THE CASE WITH THESE KIND OF SHOWERS, SOME  AREAS WERE AFFECTED MORE THAN OTHERS, THE WEST SIDE OF THE TRENT SEEM TO BE WORSE AFFECTED? IN FACT, THEY GOT WORSE LOCALLY AS THE DAY WENT ON; WE HAD THUNDER, LIGHTNING AND HAIL AROUND TEA TIME HERE IN BURTON. THIS PRODUCED VERY GAPPY RESULTS, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY RETURNS WERE GOOD.
