GREAT FANCIERS WHO HAVE TAUGHT MANY OTHERS.

I think there is more to pigeons than mere results and making money along the way out of fame and publicity. Some have written books, made films and have educated the fancy and added to its collective store of knowledge. This has been done to enhance the sport along with self-gratification. Geoff Kirkland fills many of the criteria, where many other icons fall short. I am thinking of the global impact of knowledge and insights into many diverse areas of pigeon racing. Have a dip into my 3 books to learn a trick or two-over 1200 pages on Amazon. Great books inform/educate and entertain the reader. Zsolt Talaber is a genius in this respect. Men of this calibre function at a very high level and lead the pigeon racing culture.

INBRED TO INBRED.

A clever way of starting a family is inbred birds direct from ace performers paired with similar from a different source. Test the progeny to the limit and go from there. You will need acumen to pick the right birds and a clever racing system. Inbreed birds from your own top results and maintain the system for say 30 years or so. Birds will reflect your own unique personality and become a strain, which will cease with the death of the creator. The whole process is fun and a little eccentric. It needs a great deal of focus, dedication and few will achieve it today with birds changing hands and outbreeding going on. I love inbred birds to Barcelona birds for stock. The Marco Wilson dark cock is the best UK performance bird of his generation, despite the hype heaped on others.

BIG PICTURE BIG IDEAS.

I like the world, the global impact of the sport. With modern technology an International club like The BICC should be seen and understood in many parts of planet earth. Education in the finer, more esoteric aspects of the sport needs refinement, and a few sophisticated writers can come to the rescue here. We need to project high standards at all levels of the game to encourage others into the various levels of pigeon racing. Real, specialist knowledge is in the hands of the minority, and it needs to be widely available to the many. This comes down to clever authors and the way they communicate information. I see many are linking up with The Canadian International Pigeon Magazine and Elimar. Communication goes hand in hand with publicity, and should be of a deep, probing and exacting nature-far removed from shallow lists of results reporting.

REWARDING INITIATIVE.

As a teacher and mentor, I encourage flair and talent. A man may show promise in many areas of the game. The essence is to spot potential and nurture it big style. It may be for writing like Ghenty, Barcelona like Nick Harvey, or potential racing prowess like Craig Wilkinson. The teaching is done by phone, e-mail books and articles. We all start from nothing, and I recall all the personalities who have helped me over the years especially old Jack Ross who started me off in club racing in 76. Today the key asset to pigeon racing is not pigeons perse but the people in it-critics should note this fact.

THE LONE INDIVIDUAL

I support and belong to many groups of individuals with shared interests. It strikes me that talent, eccentricity and originality are more often generated on a personal level. This type of activity may be based in ego, which may be negated as vanity or narcissism. For example, I learned a great deal in wilderness pursuits, reflection and study, and from silent contemplation. However, why be an isolate when you can link up to the mainstream in books or film? There are rich rewards on a personal note for creative self-expression as truth, art or other cerebral activities. I do admire oddball characters, as a rich vein of humanity.

DO GOOD BIRDS TAKE YOU TO THE TOP?

It takes a good fancier to tackle the top races. Without brains, method, system over many dedicated years, then success will escape you. A good man breeds and races some good birds. The essence of the whole sport is knowledge and the top ones all have it in the head, between the eyes. If you practice good technique, then the race points will produce good birds for you. By all means start off with performance bred birds to start -all will be of mixed origins and breeding despite what is written on the paper. Study the pedigrees you can trust and choose from there. Your results and contribution to the sport will demonstrate your prowess. The top is relative, and many rely on written publicity to become famous icons. To me our birds must cope with Barcelona International races.

BEST OF ENGLAND/SCOTLAND/WALES @ IRELAND

For me the quality performance bird of a whole generation is The Marco Wilson Cock at 844 miles. England is championed by Mark Gilbert/Wales by Vince Padfield/Ireland by Ronnie Williamson and Scotland by Jim Donaldson. They are all great fanciers on any level of analysis and perception. There is plenty of literature on these chaps as exemplars of the fancy. Think why they have got where they are today in the public eye of the sport. More to greatness than good birds me thinks. Why go abroad when world class fanciers and birds live in the UK@ Ireland??
