WHAT TO DO ON CHRISTMAS DAY?

I admire the dedicated souls who let their birds out on Xmas Day. Some will be reading pigeon books and enjoying DVDS- hopefully mine. As for myself it will be walking, talking and reading with an eye on the computer -why alter habits for a mere convention.? Boxing day would see me out rough shooting for a nice cockbird, hare or rabbit. It was for sport, yet we dined like Kings on shot game. The keen fancier will put his pigeons first, the pairings, eggs and young. It is so mild that some wild birds are nesting, with young ferals and woodies about. Christmas is for serious contemplation about birds and racing-my favourite show is The Snowman as always, as it is deeply spiritual and magical.

2018 CRYSTAL BALL GAZING.

I like to make sense of future possibilities. Next year may see some noble attempts at distance and marathon racing to Ireland and the UK. We are not likely to crack the top 50 open Barcelona International with our best birds and will-it is so difficult in race reality. The BICC, in expansive mode will go from strength to strength with some new members in the North. International marathon racing into the North of England has to be the ultimate challenge to them, since it is on the far horizon of quality and difficulty. I am helping some young men to have a go with my sourced birds-they have it all to do. As usual, and despite hype, very few great birds will be good enough for iconic status, contrary to popular thought and ego, and dream. Wise to dream big-think it do it, in practice. Beyond the human element, the personality is the reality of hard results. All the best, and give freely to the sport.

RECORDS TO BE BROKEN IN 2018

There are plenty of these to have a go at. We have the longest flying birds in race time at Tarbes @ Barcelona International in UK/Ireland, A good one is times having flown Barcelona. There is the longest flying young bird on the day in any organisation, and the highest velocity of any pigeon. We can expand the list to stimulate more people to have a go for a bit of fun. It is all good stuff and adds to the sport. The Squills has a list of good and some record performances to cogitate over. Birds will need to be in great condition.

LET US TALK ABOUT THE TOP RACE FOR 2018.

As usual this will be The Barcelona International in July. The ultimate test for man and bird will produce the normal test of speed/endurance and onerous difficulty for the UK and Ireland. The entries, being relatively low, will act as an indicator of how serious a race it is. With no hiding place, quality and reputation are on the line. I see all other race points as preparation for this one glorious, seminal and epic race. The magnitude of a good timer is monumental in the conscious memory. Race preparation has to be perfect as the condition of the entries needs to be optimal. Have a go to alter your perspective on life and produce a truly memorable experience. You may produce a champion strain -maker for the future of the sport.

EMPATHY FOR THE BIRDS.

Pigeons are sensitive beings, with individual responses to you the fancier. The essence of good husbandry is the health and welfare of the colony. You are crucial to this task and objective. Study with your mind and senses each bird until you think you know and recognise the character of it, as this will aid in the preparation for racing, and nomination in the key events. If birds do not turn you on then you are working blind. It helps to consider the beauty of each bird and potential as a breeder/racer. The secret to success is in your own head, as the basis of the sport is human, and personality based. Study why certain men have got to the top of their game, as good pigeons are uncommon.
