Topping the Combine

by

John Clements

The club I use for training my channel pigeons (Stockport Flying Club) had a great weekend last weekend. Three of their top members (those who were first three in the club from Yeovil) also had the joint honour of being the top three or four positions in the Central Lancs. Combine. These three were Bob Smith and Eastwood - Billy Holland and the Tommy Bradbury and Barnes partnership. These three are always near the top when it comes to inland racing. Most of us, including myself would never top an inland Combine race if we lived and raced pigeons for the next hundred years. It is a very difficult thing to do at any time.

Stockport Flying Club has so far this year been sending between 450 and 500 pigeons a week. They are a top club in the area with more than twenty members sending regularly every week - this is a huge club. In today’s declining pigeon atmosphere this club is an exception. . A club of this size cannot exist without a highly efficient secretary. Stockport are lucky to have one in fact you could make a case that the growth of any club is determined by how good or bad is it’s secretary. People are unconsciously attracted towards a club that is well run.   Pat Smith, Stockport’s secretary holds the reins - It is she and her husband who hold club together. She has the club running smoothly and does it without grandstanding - without rancour and without complaint. Secretaries such as this are just as rare as Combine winners. If fact top secretaries don’t ever come in threes - These days you are lucky if you get one once in the lifetime of any club. You could say Stockport topping the Combine was brought about by Pat being the secretary. If some fanciers with attitude accidentally became a club secretary, members would leave in droves and rush to join other clubs. Stockport is an exception - members are rushing to join.
