By Good Corn

The Up North Combine members basketed their birds for Newark Show Ground on Friday 12th April for a Saturday 13th April liberation. The Saturday morning got off with a frosty start at the home-end, but as the morning moved on the sun got out and it started to warm up a bit. The first message that came through was that the Combine were looking to start liberating at 9am, both the West Durham Amal and Durham Combine were also at Newark. It was all systems go for the UNC at 9.00 as Group 1 were liberated into a light North-East wind, with Group 2 hitting the skies at 9.20. Group 4 were up and way at 9.40 and they were followed by Group 5 which included the Teesside Federation at 10.00. The fifth and final liberation was Group 6 which includes the East Cleveland Federation who were on their way at 10.20. There was a strong Easterly wind blowing at the bottom end of the Combine with plenty of white-horses showing out at sea, with this helping the birds on and them doing a bit faster times than first thought.

The Brotton 6 Bird Club partnership of W & S Ward had their bird in fine form after timing no less that three of their six entries to win a brilliant 1st, 2nd and 5th Club, 1st and 6th East Cleveland Federation from a 68 members entry of 1.767 birds. With top honours being won by a yearling self-bred Leo Heremans recording a chart-topping vel of 1547.3, while Bill and grandson Shaun's blue card scorer was “Ruby 74 ” a 3y Van Reet hen knocking out a vel of 1536. The very reliable hen is no stranger in the frame for she won the Brotton 6 Bird Club Bird Of The Year in 2018, and now has 4 x 1st and 5 x 2nd Clubs to her credit and a number of other minor positions along the way. Bill & Shaun's third timer was a 2y blue hen who won 1st Club Bubwith the previous week. Mr & Mrs Golly (Graham) & Linda Peirson & Tubby (Graham) Purver and loft helpers Ian (Evo) Everington & Frankie Rolands also had three birds in the frame to lift 3rd, 4th and 6th Club with the green going to a George Davidson of South Shields blue hen and the yellow was potted by a yearling dark chequer Lambrecht hen, while third on the clock came a 2y blue pied hen of John Soderlund & John Maddison lines.

W & S Ward's day got even better for Bill & Shaun followed up their outstanding Brotton 6 Bird Club winning performance by timing no fewer than four of their Brotton H/S entries to win a fantastic 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th Club, 2nd, 14th, 15th and 16th Fed with vels of 1547.7, 1523.7, 1522.6 and 1522,2. With the duo's red card winner that touched down the same time as their Brotton 6 Bird Club Federation winner being a 11 flighted blue Leo Heremans hen bred of a on loan pair from Barnard & Burke of Guisborough. The form-hitting Bill & Shaun's next three timers were a 3y and two yearlings that were timed within seven seconds of each other to round off a awesome days racing. The loft of Reg Wilson, Ray Mole & Partners timed four of their squad to chalk up 2nd Club, 9th, 19th, 20th and 21st Fed with vels of 1525.0, 1520.4, 1519.8 and 1519.6.
