“The Original” Around The Up North Combine
Good Corn
Before I go onto the young bird report I will give the Marske & New Marske Ypres report, where Geoff Bavin won 1st Club with a 14 day sitting 4y chequer pied hen from Rutland Lofts. Jimmy Reed filled a couple of chambers to lift 2nd and 4th Club with the blue card being awarded to a blue roundabout hen from Brian Maude stock, while the yellow card went to a yearling blue roundabout hen from Graham Jones of Guisborough fame stock. I would like to wish Graham a full and speedy recovery after his hospital stay. The late Jack Brown & Tony Hunt filled two cells to lift 3rd and 5th Club with the green card being awarded to a 2y blue Seppers/Van Gompel cock who is the previous scorer of many positions. Tony's second timer was a 3y red cock who like the green card potter, is a frequent scorer.
The Up North Combine nine race young bird programme was due to start on Saturday 28th July but on the morning of Friday 27th July the majority of the weather committee voted to delay basketing for 24 hours, which was very puzzling for a number of fanciers for they believed we would have got a race on the Saturday. On the Saturday morning the majority of the weather committee once again voted to delay basketing for another 24 hours, this resulted in a number of fanciers asking “What about the working man who will be working Monday?”. As it panned out after looking at Monday's weather forecast the majority of the committee voted to cancel the race. Thinking we had lost the race due to the ruling “If a race is cancelled it will not be re-instated”, we would be going to the second race the following weekend. But on Monday morning the members were asked to vote on either to put the young bird race programme back a week or continue down the race programme, which resulted in putting the race programme back a week just like they did for the start of the old bird season. We all have our opinions but I believe it's only right that we stick with the programme that was passed at the UNC AGM, members will have booked holidays after racing and now the race programme has been changed. I know its only a weeks difference but the day light hours are getting shorter with the working man struggling to get his birds out before leaving the loft for work. The same as on a night with the nights taking in, it really hits home the further we get down the race line when we suffer a later liberation because if the weather turns it shortens the time for the birds to make it home before dark. And don't say it doesn't because we have had it before and just to jog your memory, it happened in 2016 when the Maidstone National birds were brought back closer to home and liberated from Peterborough at 10 minutes to 2 resulting in the top end flyers youngsters dropping at the loft on dark, with a number of birds still missing at the end of the day.
So the East Cleveland Federations first race was from Bubwith (1) on Saturday 4th August when the 75 members convoy of 2,092 birds were liberated at 9.30am flying into a light variable wind for the 50 - 53 miles fly home. Starting at Skelton Green the partnership of the late Peter Winspear & son Derek and his son Mark timed no less than four of their young bird squad to win a top notch 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th Club from a nine members entry of 351 birds. With Derek & Mark the 1st Club, 1st Fed old bird Oakham (1) winners from a convoy of 1,606 birds, red card winning youngster recording a top vel of 1342 to win a brilliant 1st Fed. While the lads who won the Club Young Bird Average in 2017, yellow card scoring baby racking up a vel of 1326 to go onto chalk up a notable 5th Fed. Bowden Bros Mick & Boss and loft helper Trevor Mitchell the 1st UNC Ypres Gold Medal winners, potted 3rd Club on 1219, while Alan & David Wright took 5th Club on 1208.
It was no surprise to see the loft of Mr & Mrs Bob & Babs Moore topping the Brotton H/S charts as the duo have flown a very consistent young bird in both Brotton H/S and the Brotton Six Bird Club for a number of years now. The young bird specialists Bob & Babs timed three of their squad to win a most impressive, 1st and 4th Club out of a fourteen members entry of 397 birds, 2nd, 6th, 20th Fed with vels of 1333. 1323, 1226. Lifelong member and mate Brian “Brunks” Laity wins the red card at Skinningrove from a twelve members muster of 484 birds, with pole position being won by a chequer cock recording a chart-topping vel of 1296 which was enough to score a notable 8th Fed. The sire of the winning cock is a grandson of Dirk Leekens Lucky Luke x Gaston Van De Wouwer, while the dam is a De Neve Marnick x Antoine & Rudi De Saer Vandenabeele. Brian started racing at a very young age when flying in Skinningrove with his late father, Brian flew in the Club for a number of years before moving house to Carlin How. It was at Carlin How when Brian flying as Albert Breckon & Laity won the Up North Combine “Danish Cup Of Friendship” for the best two bird performance from the Eastbourne National in 1983 when they won a most impressive 3rd and 11th UNC from a convoy of 18,609 birds. Carling How disbanded a few years back due to lack of membership, so the members rejoined Skinningrove H/S, where Brian flew with Albert on the Carlin How allotments until he decided to race on his own. Brian won a very impressive 4th UNC Maidstone Yearling National in 2012 when there were 7,125 birds competing. Brian moved from off the allotments and now has his loft in his house garden, where space is very limited but he is happy where he is.

While the dam of the youngster is a granddaughter of “Shadow”, so the young blue hen has the same sire of the hen that won 1st Club, 1st Fed, 1st £2 Fed Nom potting £51.00, 1st Section 7 winning £148.19, 8th Up North Combine Reims from a convoy of 3,265 birds and 3rd North Of England Championship Club banking another £177.85 for Ian & Liz this season. Keith Wren & Margaret Stone notched up 19th Fed on 1251 with the duo's timer being a home-bred darkened down blue white flight hen bred out of a cock who is a son of Terry Elliot & John Watson of Gateshead fame 1st Up North Combine Ypres Gold Medal winning “Passhendaele Poppy” out of 7,905 birds, 1st North Of England Homing Union Open from a convoy of 14,325 birds in 2014. It turned out to be a disaster race for the members, for it took almost 2 hours to fill the first 20 Fed positions which is heart-breaking for the fanciers and their birds. The Beechwood & Easterside partnership of Bunney, Pedelty & Hudson were the well out in front winners after timing a blue pied cock achieving a chart-topping vel of 1072.4 to win a brilliant and well-deserved 1st Federation. The pole position winners was the only Beechwood & Easterside loft to feature in the Feds top 20, which must have been soul-destroying for the rest of the Club members for they must have been wondering when they were going to get their first bird. Congratulations to the partnership on their Federation winning performance.
Young Nathan Bonar hits the winners' enclosure at Haverton Hill after timing a couple of youngsters to win a top notch 1st and 6th Club, 2nd and 19th Fed with vels of 891.2 and 622.6.
