By Good Corn
The Up North Combine had held-over from Roye on Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th June due to the weather conditions been foggy at the liberation site, on the morning of Monday 11th June the conditions on the liberation site was still not suitable for a liberation, so all the organisations who were competing for the Queens Cup decided to take the birds back to Burbure as the weather conditions were suitable for a liberation from the shorter distance. When the transporters arrived at the Burbure site there was a blue sky and sun, the birds were watered and rested before Chief Convoyer Peter Maw gave the go ahead to liberate the UNC convoy of 4,051 birds at 8.40hrs flying into a fresh North East wind, with the birds having to put a good shift in to reach their lofts.
Ian Stafford & Mark Wilson timed five birds to win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th Club Skinningrove H/S, 1st, 8th, 10th, 13th, 14th East Cleveland Federation, 1st, 21st, 47th, 73rd, 7th UNC. The lads timed another couple of 2y to notch up 238th, 249th UNC, with their latter timer being their Burbure (1) Federation chart topper. The loft of the late Gordon “Shang” Peirson MBE, sons Sack & Jim and loft helpers Bever & Bobby McConnell, fresh and still buzzing from their previous weeks 1st Club, 1st Fed Oakham (2) timed a 3y blue roundabout Busschaert hen bred from John Soderlund & John Maddison South Shields fame doing 1282.3 to pocket 188th UNC. Tich Richards & Alice Marsay clocked a 2y to net 234th Combine.
The Brotton H/S loft of Mr & Mrs Golly “Graham” & Linda Peirson, Tubby “Graham” Purver and the very helpful Evo “Ian” Everington & Frankie Rolands who were the Clubs second highest prize-winners in 2017, enjoyed the race of all races after timing the first six birds into Brotton to win 1st, 2nd, 3rd Club Brotton H/S, a fourth bird was later timed to take 5th Club and 1st, 2nd, 3rd Club Brotton Six Bird Club. The grand/sire of Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Frankie’s winner is brother to “Den Dromer”, while the grand/dam a double daughter to the sire “Lucky 77” a half-sister to “Den Dromer”. The blue card was awarded to a yearling blue hen making 1327 to chalk up a respectable 6th Fed, 14th UNC; the young hens sire is out of George Davison (Mr & Mrs Davison) of South Shields fame has proved to be a very good racing cock after winning 7 x 1st Clubs. The pole position winning “Elton” who is of Ray Horton success lines crossed into Evo's equally successful bloodlines, is the son of a cock who won an awesome 6 x 1st Clubs for Golly & Linda, Out of his six red card winning performance the cock won four times from the channel, with him winning 1st Club Lillers and 1st Club Clermont in both Brotton H/S and the Brotton Six Bird Club, and if I'm not mistaken he achieved this from two different loft locations. Andrew & Paul's fourth timer was a 2017 bred blue cock, who like the previous two yearling timers will have their chance to prove themselves from the channel in the next couple of years.
Andrew & Paul have enjoyed a brilliant season so far after taking 2nd Club, 11th Fed out of Newark and then winning 1st and 3rd Club, 2nd and 20th Fed the following race from Chelmsford (1). While Stephen & Jeanann's yellow card claimer being a 2015 bred blue hen making 1249 for 20th Fed.
I have said it before and I will say it again, that the Teesside Federation is nowhere near as big Club and birdage wise as it once was when there were up to 7,000 birds competing from the inland races. But what they lack in numbers they more than make up for in performances when competing in the Combine races, this is the UNC's third Combine race of the season and the three Teesside Federation winners have won the following. Tommy Clarke & son Gary's Eastbourne (1) National winner went onto win 1st Section, 4th UNC from a convoy of 18,545 birds. Onto Burbure (1) where Andrew Appleton & Paul Longstaff's Fed winner went onto win 1st Section, 3rd UNC winning a Combine Bronze Medal when there were 10,633 birds competing. Now we have Colin Atkinson the winner of 1st Fed, 1st Section, 9th UNC out of an entry of 4,051 birds. If that's not racing at it's best, then I don't know what is. Well done lads, I wish the Federation continuous success at UNC level.

The partnership of Andrew & Gavin Doe, John “Dillon” Swales and the late Sandy Sanderson are in 6th place with a yearling.
The Skelton Green loft of Bowden Bros Mick & Boss and loft helper Trevor Mitchell returned to the winners' enclosure in great style after timing no fewer than four of their entries to win a top notch 1st, 2nd, 4th, 6th Club to record their fourth win of the season. With the red and blue card winners that were clocked one second apart being both yearlings achieving vels of 1529.3 and 1529.1 to score a useful 8th and 9th Fed. The lads next couple of timers that were clocked 17 seconds apart were also yearlings making 1517 and 1515 to notch up 18th and 20th Fed. Alan & David Wright are in 3rd spot with a yearling doing 1526.6 to claim 12th Fed; while the late Peter Winspear, son Derek and his mark timed a yearling doing 1516 for 19th Fed.
The partnership of the late Jack Brown & Tony Hunt got back to their winning ways at Marske & New Marske to record Tony's fourth win of the campaign. With Tony's pole position winner being a 2017 bred blue flipey Dirk Seppers/Van Gompel widowhood cock achieving a top vel of 1521 which was enough to score a useful 13th Fed. The red card winning cock who was 2nd Club out of Oakham (1) when beaten by a loft mate, is the previous winner of 1st Club Worksop (1) as a young bird. Geoff Bavin timed a 2016 bred chequer roundabout hen bred from Rutland Lofts stock to score 2nd Club. While Martin Hogarth nets 3rd Club with a 2y chequer roundabout hen of his own breed, the hen was a very close 2nd Club Rivenhall as a young bird when beaten by her own nestmate. Martin also win the Club Nom. Jimmy Reed is in 4th spot with his inform yearling blue w/f roundabout hen off Geoff Kirkland stock, with the yellow card scorer chalking for the fifth race running after winning 5th Club Oakham (1), 5th Club Worksop (2), 1st Club, 19th Fed Huntingdon when there were 1,076 birds competing, 1st Club, 33rd Fed Oakham (2) out of 812 birds. The partnership of Paul Longstaff, Jeff Moore & Ron Mackay pockets 5th Club after timing a 1y blue Van Loon widowhood cock bred from Anth Moore of Guisborough fame, the young cock is carding for the second time in as many weeks after lifting 3rd Club Huntingdon. In over 30 years as being a scribe I can never remember there being five different card scorers like this week in all the races I have reported on in that time.
Down at Staithes ex Boosbeck member Golly “Derek” Foster makes it his third win of the season after timing four of his squad to win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 6th Club. While Chris Cooke had a couple of his entries on the clock to pocket 4th and 5th Club.
