“The Original” Around The Up North Combine

By Good Corn

The so called early spring weather had been very unkind to us, what with cold winds, prolonged rainy days, mist and fog up and down the North East coast. Due to the very sham weather which saw a number of days being so bad the members were unable to exercise their birds, the Up North Combine members took a vote which resulted in 20 Feds to 3 voting on putting the 2018 racing season back one week. We did get a couple of good days after the outcome of the vote, which meant the fanciers were able to get a couple of training chucks in before the rain and fog returned. As it was a very good weather forecast for the Combines first race on Saturday 14th April, the birds were basketed on the Friday, with a great number of fanciers either not sending or only sending a fraction of their birds due to not enough training leading up to the first race. The first transporter reached the race point at 11pm Friday evening with the last wagon pulling in at 12.30am Saturday morning, the forecaster was now giving increasing cloud cover for the Saturday with only a 50-50 chance of a race. Come 7.30am Saturday morning the weather was poor at both the race point and Thirsk, by 8.55am the weather was improving at the race point but visibility was still poor at Thirsk. The sun was breaking through at 10am and it was also looking good at Thirsk with high cloud and the odd sight of the sun. With the very high cloud and some breaks and the visibility been 10 miles plus at the race point and the convoyers line of flight at York, Thirsk, Gabinwold, Teesside, Newcastle and Berwick been good visibility with broken cloud and some patches of blue sky, Chief Convoyer Peter Maw liberated Group 1 at 10.10am and got Group 2 up and away at 10.30am, with Group 3 hitting the sky at 10.50am flying into a South West wind.

The East Cleveland Federations 58 members convoy of 1,474 birds were liberated at 10.50am into a South West wind. With the Lingdale partnership of the late George Skidmore & Grandsons Michael & Liam Jackson timing a 2y recording a vel of 1698 to win a fantastic 1st Club and 1st Federation.    David Coates and loft helper Popeye hits the winners' enclosure at Boosbeck with the lads red card winner being a yearling. I don't have the Marske & New Marske result on hand but I will have it for next time.

Due to the weather the UNC had no racing on the weekend of 28th and 29th April, so my next report will be the Chelmsford report flown on 5th May. Any news to Good Corn 6 Boulby Drive Loftus Saltburn Cleveland TS13 4JN. Tel: 01287 643624 or Email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
