Continuous Success For Reg Wilson, Ray Mole & Partners
By Good Corn
On Friday 12th January Brotton Homing Society and the Brotton Six Bird Club once again joined forces to hold their joint 2017 presentation evening at The Spar Hotel, Saltburn. The night got under way when Brotton H/S Secretary Terry Callan took to the floor to welcome and thank the members, their wife’s, family, friends and guests for attending the joint presentation night. As always Terry gave a run down on the format of the evening which consisted of the presenting of the Brotton H/S silverware and then followed by the Brotton Six Bird Club presentation. The Turkey or Beef dinner with all the trimmings would follow, with Terry's good Lady Cath going round with the Christmas Cake, Cheese and after dinner mints and chocolates, then the Karaoke Disco, raffle, the auction of the Brotton H/S 2018 breeder/buyer youngsters, and then back to the Karaoke Disco. Terry gave a run down on the 2017 racing season where he gave praise to the members performances throughout the season, and then asked Club chairman Bill Heslop to take to the floor and say a few words, with Bill thanking Terry for all his hard work throughout the year, Bill then asked me who was accompanied by my Sister Shirley, Grandsons Hayden & Tyler up to present the trophies, prize money and prize cards to the very worthy winners.
After presenting the silverware Terry presented gifts of thanks to Shirley, Hayden & Tyler and a gift for Carole who has not attended the pay out night for a number of years due to her ill health, but is always presented with a gift, Guests Sheila Dowey who was in attendance with is Husband Bill, the east Cleveland Federation Secretary, and Pam Heslop were also presented with gifts, so too was Cath for her work for the Club, Brian McCormick who does a fantastic job in raising Club funds and little Ruby Ward. I would like to thank the Brotton H/S members for once again inviting me, Shirley, Hayden & Tyler along to present the prizes, and also thank them for the gifts.

Bill then asked Terry up to receive a special gift from the members for his 40 years as Club Secretary, I don't have to tell you that you have to be very dedicated to serve 40 years as a Club Secretary and there wont be that many who can boast that many years in the job. Terry is also a East Cleveland Federation delegate and a Vice President for the Up North Combine, Terry has enjoyed much success over the years with him being the previous winner of 1st Up North Combine Old Bird Folkestone (2) National in 1997 from a convoy of 13,980 birds. Terry is also the previous winner of the Up North Combine Channel Average in 1974 and 1979 when flying in the partnership of Callan & (the late) Jim Bowman, Terry has achieved many honours at all levels in his time in the sport. The meal went down very well, the host of raffle prizes made some good money for the Brotton H/S Club funds, the breeder/buyer sale birds also raised some money to race for and some extra money for the Club funds. The money raised from the raffle and the percentage taken out from the breeder/buyer helps to subsidise the price of the presentation evening tickets, which is a big help to the members who attend the payout night. Thanks to Hayden for taking the Brotton H/S photos, he is growing up fast now and has a eye for the Ladies. It didn't take him long to zoom in for a photo of Kirsty Carkett and her partner Dave Jones.

The Brotton Six Bird Club Chairman Golly “Graham” Peirson took to the floor to welcome and thank everyone for attending the pay out night, and then went onto thank Jackie Wynn for all the hard work she put in to the Club in her first year as Club Secretary as Jackie is also Secretary of Skelton Green where she races in partnership with her Husband Andrew, flying as A & J Wynn, Golly also thanked Jackie's Mother Brenda Reilly for the tireless work she puts in throughout the year and has done so for a great number of years. Then Golly asked me up to present the silverware to the very worthy Brotton Six Bird Club winners and prizewinners, after the prizes were presented Golly then asked Hayden & Tyler up to receive their gifts of thanks, which they thank the members for. As I have stated in previous presentation evening reports, the members are competing no more than six birds against six birds each week. Some weeks the winning bird can be a number of minutes in front of the second bird in the Club, but I did notice a number of times from the inland races in 2017, that the first and second birds were clocked on the same minute, while other weeks there was one or two minutes between them. From the longer and harder races the timing between birds is sometimes longer, but that can also happen in Clubs that have a lot more birds away than the Six Bird Club members. As always I will report on the Brotton H/S prizewinners this week and report on the Brotton Six Bird Club prizewinners in next weeks report.
Top loft in Brotton Homing Society in 2017 for the fourth consecutive year was the partnership of Reg Wilson, Ray Mole & Partners, who were the winners of 6 x 1st, 11 x 2nd, 8 x 3rd, 8 x 4th, 6 x 5th, 8 x 6th and 167pts. Reg & Ray were also the winners of the “Inland Average”, “Channel Average”, “Combined Old Bird Average”, “Total Combined Average”, “Bird Of The Year Trophy”, “Best Channel Bird Trophy”, “Two Hundred Miles Trophy”, “W Rigg Trophy”, “B McCormick Trophy”, “£1.00 Trophy”, “A Marshall Memorial Trophy”, “A Hope Trophy”, “F Reilly Memorial Trophy”, etc, etc. Reg & Ray started the defence of their title by timing a couple of birds that touched down together at old bird Bubwith to pocket 6th and 7th Club. The duo followed that up a week later at Worksop by timing three of their entries in under a minute to lift a notable 2nd and 4th Club, 2nd, 8th and 15th East Cleveland Federation. Reg and Ray were in the points for the third race running out of Oakham (1) after four of their team were timed in the space of 34 seconds to chalk up a cracking 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th Club, 11th, 13th, 14th and 15th Fed.

The lads early good form continued at the fourth race Huntingdon, when a couple of birds were clocked within 12 seconds of each other to net a very nice 2nd and 3rd Club, 10th and 14th Fed. Reg & Ray who have enjoyed great success for many, many years recorded their first win of the season from Oakham (2) that replaced the Rivenhall (1) race, after timing three of their squad to win a top notch 1st and 3rd Club, 2nd, 5th and 20th Fed when there were 1,463 birds away. Reg & Ray were in the frame for the sixth race running when they racked up their second win on the belt from the Eastbourne National when no fewer than five birds were on the clock to win a brilliant 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Club, 7th, 9th, 10th and 19th Fed when there were 1,171 birds away, with the well-fancied green card scorer winning 1st £1 and £2 Fed Nom (which is run by Terry Callan on all the UNC races) banking £89.00. The pole position winner went onto score 77th Up North Combine when there were 18,257 birds competing and 78th North Of England Homing Union Open from a convoy of 26,042 birds, while the lads next three timers went onto lift 101st, 104th and 173rd Combine to round off a cracking team performance.
Onto race number seven which was from Oakham (3) where the boys timed two birds in the space of three seconds to pot a nice 2nd and 3rd Club, 11th and 12th Fed. Reg & Ray's birds were not letting up in their quest to retain their top loft status, for they were in the points again out of the first channel race Burbure (1) when a trio of birds were timed to take a notable 2nd, 4th and 5th Club, with the blue card potter claiming 20th Fed and the yellow card lifter winning 1st £1 and 3rd £2 Fed Noms banking £56.80. The inform Reg & Ray who had scored in all races so far recorded their third win in nine starts at Rivenhall, after timing no fewer than four of their squad to win a cracking 1st, 2nd, 4th and 6th Club, with their chart topper chalking up a useful 6th Fed and the blue card potter netting 20th Fed out of an entry of 1,365 birds. Three birds were in the frame out of Newark (1) to lift a very nice 2nd, 3rd and 5th Club, with the blue and green card scorers that were timed within 14 seconds of each other going onto pocket 13th and 15th Fed. The following week when the birds were at the third French race Roye, no less than four of their channel team were timed to win a belting 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th Club, 7th, 20th and 21st Fed when there were 491 birds away, with Reg & Ray's well-fancied red card winner taking 3rd £2 Fed Nom pocketing £22.80.
Reg & Ray who are lifelong members of the sport, were in the points for the twelve week running out of Peterborough which is an outstanding achievement, where they timed a brace of birds to pot 2nd and 6th Club with their blue card potter netting a useful 6th Fed. After being out of the points at Oakham (4) the duo returned to the frame at the Rivenhall National (sub Eastbourne 2), when another two birds were timed to lift 2nd and 6th Club again, only this time their blue card scorer went onto chalk up 12th Fed. The following week the birds were back over the channel for the fourth French race Reims that turned out to be a very tough race, Reg & Ray who have flown a good channel bird over the years where they have won the Club channel average on a great number of occasions, timed three birds to win a well-deserved and notable 1st, 2nd and 6th Club, with the pole position winner going onto score 12th Fed out of 287 birds and 140th UNC from a convoy of 4,193 birds, while the blue card lifter took 15th Fed and 165th Combine. Two birds were timed one second apart from Newark (2) to lift 4th and 5th Club; and then the following week when the birds were at Newark (3) three of the lads team were timed to claim a very nice 2nd, 3rd and 4th Club, 2nd, 18th and 20th Fed.
Reg & Ray's most impressive old bird run continued from the final old bird race Burbure (2), when they recorded their third channel win from five French races and sixth win of the old bird campaign, after timing a couple of birds to win an awesome 1st and 3rd Club, 3rd and 10th Fed from 907 birds, 51st and 205th UNC from a convoy of 10,689 birds. The old bird season consists of 14 inland races from the distance of 52 miles to 269 miles, and five French channel races from the distance of 313 miles to 540 miles, with Reg & Ray scoring in all but two of the 14 old bird races, which takes some doing. With their first pointless race being Oakham (4) and their second being from the longest race Bourges (assuming they sent to this race), where no birds made it home on the day in the UNC and only three birds made it home in the Fed and 37 birds made it home in the UNC from the 3 day race. Reg & Ray never had the best of time with their young birds in 2017, with them notching up 20th Fed out of Worksop (2). I'm unsure if they scored from any of the other young bird races as I don't have all the results on hand.
Reg & Ray have really gone to town with their racing achievements the last four years with them churning out top performances after top performances to keep them on top of their game. They have tried a number of different breeds of Pigeons over the years which has seen them win both inland and over the channel, winning numerous averages along the way. Reg & Ray's continuous success has seen them become a force, which has seen their birds often performing as a team, that has often seen them timing two, three and up to four birds in the space of seconds of each other to rack up some very impressive performances. No doubt Reg & Ray will be hoping for much of the same in 2018.
The up and coming partnership of Mr & Mrs Golly “Graham” & Linda Peirson, Tubby “Graham” Purver and loft helpers “ Evo” Ian Everington & Franky, enjoyed a fantastic season with the gang winning 6 x 1st, 9 x 2nd, 8 x 3rd, 8 x 4th, 6 x 5th, 8 x 6th Clubs and 164pts. Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky received the “Young Bird Average”, “Runner Up Old Bird Inland Average”, “Runner Up Channel Average”, “Runner Up Total Combined Average”, “Best Young Bird Trophy”, “Club Cup”, “T Shaw Memorial Trophy”, “Metcafe Cup”, “Eddie Ward Memorial Trophy”, “Les Rigg Memorial Trophy”, “Bortner Young Bird Cup”, “Vaux Tankard”, “Bubwith (3) Young Bird Trophy”, “F Reilly Memorial Young Bird Average Trophy” etc, etc. Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky's tally of 164pts started with them pocketing 3rd Club, 17th Fed out of old bird Bubwith, and then the following week when the birds were at Worksop a couple of their entries were timed within three seconds of each other to lift 5th and 6th Club, 11th and 13th Fed.

Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky won their first of six wins at the third race Oakham (1) when their pole position winner went onto score a notable 8th Fed from a convoy of 2,191 birds, the partnership was out of the points at Huntingdon but hit back the following week at Oakham (2) when no less than three of their squad were timed to net a notable 2nd, 4th and 5th Club, 4th, 8th and 10th Fed. Onto the Eastbourne National where a nice 2nd Club, 7th Fed, 82nd UNC and 83rd NEHU Open was taken, and this was followed up by claiming 5th Club Oakham (3). Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky were enjoying their run of form when they had three birds on the clock out of the first French race Burbure (1), when they won a cracking 1st, 3rd and 6th Club, with their chart-topper going onto chalk up 16th Fed when there were 848 birds away. After two races without getting on the points chart, Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky reloaded at Roye where a very nice 2nd Club, 14th Fed was potted, and then another single bird was in the frame out of Peterborough to net a useful 5th Club, 6th Fed.
Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Frank's first season together was making a very big impact on the partnerships performances, the introduction of Evo and young Franky, who proved to be a force at their former Club Skelton Green, was really getting the best out of the birds. So much so Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky recorded their third old bird win at Oakham (4) when three birds were timed to win a belting 1st, 4th and 6th Club, with the winner lifting a useful 8th Fed and the yellow card potter claiming 15th Fed when there were 1,268 birds competing. Another three birds were in the frame a week later when the birds were at the Rivenhall National to chalk up a nice 3rd, 4th and 5th Club. Moving onto Burbure (2) where no fewer than four birds were timed to score a notable 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th Club, with the first three birds on the clock going onto pot 7th, 11th and 12th Fed, 157th, 224th and 226th UNC.
Moving onto the partnerships young bird average winning season, where a trio of babies were on the clock at Bubwith (2) to net a very nice 3rd, 4th and 5th Club; and this was followed up a week later by pocketing a notable 2nd and 3rd Club out of Worksop (1). Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky hit winning form a week later from Worksop (2) when a couple of youngsters were timed one second apart to win a belting 1st and 2nd Club, 10th and 11th Fed out of an entry of 1,830 birds. Melton Mowbray saw three birds in the frame to lift a very nice 3rd, 4th and 6th Club with the green card potter netting 16th Fed. Another three of the partnership entries were timed at Peterborough to net a tidy 2nd, 4th and 5th Club, with the blue card lifter claiming 8th Fed. It was all systems go a week later at Rivenhall when no fewer than five of the inform Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky's youngsters were timed to win an awesome 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th Club, with the red and blue card scorers that were timed 13 seconds apart going onto chalk up 18th and 21st Fed when there were 1,048 birds competing. Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky's impressive run of form continued at the Maidstone National when a couple of their squad were timed to lift a very nice 2nd and 3rd Club, with the blue card potter going onto pot a notable 6th Fed and 75th UNC. Young bird win number three and Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky's sixth win of the 2017 campaign was achieved at the final race of the season Bubwith (3), when 1st Club, 17th Fed was won out of an entry of 791 birds.
Golly, Linda, Tubby, Evo & Franky will be well pleased with their 2017 racing performances but that wont stop them looking for improvement in 2018, where they will be fighting tooth and nail for top spot. I for one believe they have the birds to compete for top honours, there is enough in the team to spend the time needed with the birds to achieve more success.
The loft of Mr & Mrs Bob & Bab's Moore were the winners of 5 x 1st, 3 x 2nd, 2 x 3rd, 5 x 4th, 2 x 5th, 3 x 6th Clubs and 75pts, with Bob & Bab's being the winners of the “L Riddiough Trophy”, “Selby Cup”, “Joe Wright Memorial Trophy”, “Retford (1) Cup”, “Young Bird Grantham Trophy” and “Runner Up Young Bird Average Trophy”. Bob & Bab's made their mark from the second old bird race Worksop, when they won a most impressive 1st Club, 1st Fed from a convoy of 2,368 birds which was a fantastic achievement. The duo were back in the frame from race four where another single bird was on the clock to chalk up 4th Club, 19th Fed Huntingdon. Onto the young bird racing where Bob & Bab's have always churned out a number of winning team performances in the past, and 2017 was no different for Bob & Bab's timed no fewer than four of their small young bird squad in the space of three seconds at Bubwith (1) to win a top notch 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Club. Race number two from Bubwith (2) saw Bob & Bab's time a couple of babies one second apart to win a cracking 1st and 2nd Club. Bob & Bab's recorded a hat-trick of young bird wins out of Worksop (1) when another two youngsters were clocked to win a notable 1st and 4th Club. Lifelong member of the sport Bill and Shaun next chalked two week later when 3rd Club was scored out of Rivenhall. Bill & Shaun recorded their second win of the old bird season in great style at Peterborough when no fewer than three of their squad were timed to win a brilliant 1st, 3rd and 4th Club, 3rd, 7th and 8th Fed when there were 1,408 birds competing.

Bill & Shaun's impressive old bird season got even better when they timed a couple of their Newark (2) entries one second apart to win a top notch 1st and 2nd Club, 8th and 9th Fed out of an entry of 1,045 birds away. Bill & Shaun had enjoyed a very good run with them achieving three wins in the space of four old bird inland races, which is flying at its best. The two lads were in the frame again at Newark (3) to notch up 6th Club to round off a very notable old bird season.
