Brotton6 B Club Payout

EAST CLEVELAND FEDERATION

by Keith Simpson

Close Finish At The Brotton Six Bird Club

Brotton Six Bird Club held their 2007 presentation evening at ‘The Arches’, Brotton on Saturday 27th October. Hard working Club secretary Barbara Moore welcomed the full house to the Club's big night, and followed that up by asking if everyone had enjoyed the Sunday carvery meal and had enough to eat? The packed house showed their appreciation by giving a round of applause to Jean and her staff for the lovely meal. Barbara welcomed guests Bill & Sheila Dowey, saying Bill puts a lot of hard work in all the year round for the East Cleveland Federation, and Sheila who catches everyone with her raffle tickets at Fed clocking setting night where good money is raised for Fed funds. Chief guests were Brian & Keith Simpson who were accompanied by Val & Carole; the lass congratulated Brian & Keith for another successful season where they were top flyers in the East Cleveland Federation in 2007. Barbara also said a well done to Val & Carole for putting up with the two brothers throughout the season, which we know is never easy especially from April to September. Barbara then gave a run down on the thrills and spills throughout the racing season, which resulted in put back races and holdovers, and flying only two of the five channel races due to the Bird Flu. The 22 Club members sent a total of 2,266 birds to the 26-race programme, with a total points pay out of £936, competing for £6 a point paid out on the first-three positions. Barbara gave praise for the members who scored Fed points throughout the 2007 racing season and gave a special mention to the three members who featured in the first-thirteen in the Fed from Bourges where the Club only entered 18 birds. Barbara followed that up by wishing everyone a great night before handing over to Club chairman Bill Ward, who once again turned out very smartly dressed. Bill thanked Barbara for another job well done throughout the year and was well pleased with the turn out, believing this occurs when the secretary’s job is done right. Bill then asked Brian & Keith to present the silverware and prize money to the very worthy winners. Before I go onto the roll of honours, I would like to say that although the Brotton Six Bird Club is small birdage wise due to the six-bird limit, the members have achieved some outstanding performances over the years. I know the members have not scored as many Fed positions this year as they have done in the past but the ambition to achieve success has never dropped. Looking back to the members previous results, there’re best performances have come from Bourges, which proves they have something special for the longest race of the season. Lets not forget that they are getting birds home from Bourges on the day and in race time, where others are failing to achieve this. The same members are doing this year after year, sometimes with the same Pigeons where good Fed and Combine positions are scored. The Brotton Six Bird Club members are enjoying their racing and anything after their Club wins and positions is a bonus, a bonus that has been appreciated in the past and I’m sure will return again very soon.

Top loft for 2007 was the partnership of Frank Reilly & son Wayne, with the duo winning 3 x 1sts, 2 x 2nds, 5 x 3rds, 4 x 4ths, 3 x 5ths and 1 x 6th. Frank & Wayne amassed a season total of 67pts pocketing £108; this must have been the closest finish ever for top spot in the Clubs history with 2pts separating the top three lofts. The father and son partnership received trophies for their three wins and also won the best old bird inland of the year trophy, the bird of the year trophy, the ‘Dave Drinkhall’ youngest flyer of the year trophy and the combined average. Frank & Wayne hit the winners’ enclosure on the first day of the new season when their Selby winner went onto score 21st East Cleveland Federation from an entry of 2,872 birds and also chalking up 37th North Yorkshire & East Cleveland Section from a convoy of 4,759 birds. The loft recorded their second old bird win of 2007 at Huntingdon (1) when two cells were filled to win 1st and 5th, with the red card winner going onto achieve 28th Fed out of an entry of 3,131 birds. The blue was potted up at Rivenhall (1) and the yellow was netted from the back-to-back Folkestone National and Melton Mowbray (2) races. Frank & Wayne were in the clock for the fifth consecutive race at Lillers when a couple of birds were timed to lift 3rd and 5th. Win number three of the season came the duo’s way at Huntingdon (2); another single bird was in the clock at Bourges to pocket 3rd Club, 12th Fed and 31st Section. The green was taken for the second week running at the Maidstone National, and 5th was notched up at Melton Mowbray (4). Onto the young birds where a couple of babies were in the clock at Selby (2) to chalk up 3rd and 4th; the blue was taken at Bourn, 3rd netted at Rivenhall and 4th was picked up at Selby (3). Frank & Wayne have won a great number of averages in the Club over the years with some very notable performances in that time. Frank & Wayne’s best performance came in 2004 when their Le Ferte Bernard red card winner that was timed on the second day scored 2nd Fed, 4th Section and 39th UNC from a convoy of 5,427 birds. This was Frank & Wayne’s second timer for they had won 1st Club, 1st Fed, 1st Section and 5th UNC the previous day in Brotton H.S., there was no doubt this was a outstanding performance from a race where only a few made it home on the day and many other birds failing to make it home due to the very nasty weather hit on their way home.

Lifelong member of the sport Tony Biott enjoyed a fantastic season being second highest prizewinner. Tony was the winner of 5 x 1sts, 2 x 2nds, 5 x 3rds, 4 x 4ths, 3 x 5ths and 1 x 6ths, his total of 66pts all scored with the old birds earned him £144. Tony flew a very consistent old bird with him lifting 3rd Club and 29th Fed Selby; the lad also took 2nd Club and 36th Fed Melton Mowbray (1). The following week at the new race point Rivenhall (1) Tony filled a couple of chambers to win 1st and 5th, with his red card winner going onto score 19th Fed out of an entry of 2,398 birds. Tony recorded his second win off the belt at the Folkestone National, the inform Tony was in the frame again at Lillers when 2nd Club and 36th Fed was chalked up. The lad recorded his third win in five races at Rivenhall (2), and this was followed up a week later by notching up 5th Huntingdon (2). Tony’s best performance of the season came at Melton Mowbray (3) when two birds were timed to win 1st and 2nd, with his chart-topper going onto score a most impressive 3rd Fed from a convoy of 1,339 birds. At this time Tony had chalked in nine of the eleven races so far, a record that takes some achieving by anyone’s standards. There was no holding up for another couple of thimbles were filled the Maidstone National to net 4th and 6th; the yellow was potted a week later when the birds were at Eastbourne. Tony recorded his fifth old bird win of the campaign at Newton Abbot, a substitute race for Andrezel when his well out in front winner netted a very impressive 4th Fed out of 382 birds and also going onto lift 8th Section when there were 804 birds competing. Tony’s impressive season where he scored in twelve of the sixteen competed races saw him win the old bird inland average, and best channel bird of the year and also received silverware for his five wins. Tony enjoyed great success when flying with Staithes in the 1960s with him taking the Club by storm and topping the Fed many times along the way. Tony has also flown a notable Pigeon in his time in the Brotton Six Bird Club, with one of his best performances being achieved in 2001 when he timed two birds to win 1st and 2nd Club, 1st and 11th Fed, 28th and 74th UNC Eastbourne from a convoy of 23,138 birds.

Third highest earners were Mr & Mrs Bob & Barbara Moore who were the winners of 3 x 1sts, 3 x 2nds, 5 x 3rds, 2 x 4ths, 3 x 5ths, scoring 65pts to pocket £120. Bob & Barbara were in the points from day one when they chalked up 2nd Club and 28th Fed old bird Selby (1), the green was potted at Melton Mowbray (2) and the yellow at Huntingdon (2). Bob & Barbara recorded their first win of the season at Maidstone, in place of the Lillers (2) race. Bob & Barbara flew a very consistent young bird with them hitting the winners’ enclosure from the first young bird race when their Selby (1) chart-topper went onto score a very impressive 3rd Fed out of 3,043 birds and 3rd Section from a convoy of 5,015 birds. Then 5th was chalked up at Selby (2) and a couple of thimbles were filled at Mansfield (2) to net 2nd and 4th. The green was then potted at Bourn, this was followed up with Bob & Barbara winning their second young bird red card of the season at Rivenhall. Another single bird was in the clock at the Maidstone National where the green was potted, Bob & Barbara rounded off the season by timing two youngsters at Selby (3) to score 2nd and 3rd to help them win the Club young bird average. Bob & Barbara have won the Club combined average a few times with them being the Clubs top loft in 2006. One of Bob & Barbara’s previous impressive performances came in 2002 when they won 1st and 2nd Club, 10th and 13th Fed, 28th and 74th UNC young bird Maidstone National from a convoy of 14,202 birds. Bob & Barbara’s two sons Paul & David have attended the payout night for a great number of years, with the grandchildren now following on to enjoy a great night.

Ces Rawson a lifelong member of the sport and Senior Vice - President of the Up North Combine 2007 season saw him fourth highest lifter winning 3 x 1sts, 3 x 2nds, 3 x 3rds, 3 x 4ths, 1 x 5th, 3 x 6ths accumulating 59pts to pocket £108 and also lifting another £35 for winning the young bird nom. Ces kicked off his season by potting the yellow at old bird Melton Mowbray (1), the lad filled a couple of chambers at Rivenhall (2) to lift 2nd and 3rd. The next points were scored at Bourges when 4th Club, 13th Fed and 38th Section was chalked up. Ces won Bourges in 2003 when his red card winner went onto score 4th Fed and 73rd UNC from a convoy of 2,741 birds, Clubmates Jim Waters & son James were 2nd Club, 9th Fed and 94th Combine from the same race. Back to the present day with Ces potting the blue at Melton Mowbray (4), and two birds were in the clock at Maidstone to net 2nd and 3rd. Surprisingly Ces never had a old bird win in 2007, with all but his Melton Mowbray (1) points being achieved at the latter part of the old bird season. Ces who served his Pigeon apprenticeship at Skinningrove has flown a very notable old and channel bird in the past, but no doubt Ces will be hoping to get back to his old bird winning ways in 2008. Ces flew a better young bird this time around, with consistency in his young bird team. Ces hit the winners’ enclosure at Mansfield (1) and followed that up a week later by timing a couple of youngsters to win 1st and 3rd. The following week when the birds were at Melton Mowbray 5th was notched up; another single bird was in the clock at Bourn to lift 6th spot. Ces clocked two birds at Rivenhall to chalk up 4th and 6th, the Maidstone National saw Ces record his third young bird win in six races. Ces decided not to send to Selby (3) so looking at his young bird performances, he will be well pleased winning 3 x 1st Clubs and scoring in six consecutive races as this is a very good achievement.

Les Cropper who has enjoyed retired life for the past 2 years was the winner of 2 x 1sts, 2 x 2nds, 3 x 3rds, 3 x 4ths, 2 x 5ths, 3 x 6ths chalking up 50pts to net £73. Les made a notable start to the season scoring in the first - four races, with the lad starting off by taking 5th at Selby. Les hit the winners’ enclosure in great style at Mansfield when no fewer than three thimbles were filled to win a very impressive 1st, 2nd and 4th Club, 7th, 14th and 21st Fed from an entry of 3,347 birds, with the red and blue card winners also going onto score 9th and 29th Section from a convoy of 5,549 birds. I have always said that when someone has three positions in the frame, it’s a great achievement and more so in the Six Bird Club because you have got half your entries in the points. 6th as notched up at Melton Mowbray (1), and a couple of cells were filled at Huntingdon (1) to pocket 3rd and 4th. After missing out at Rivenhall (1) Les was back in the frame at the Folkestone National to lift 3rd spot, this was followed up a week later by taking 6th at Melton Mowbray (2). The lad’s next prize card was achieved at Huntingdon (2) when 6th was taken; the following week at Melton Mowbray (3) the yellow was potted. Onto the young birds were Les topped the Club charts at Selby (2) and potted the blue a week later at Mansfield (1), the green was chalked up at Melton Mowbray and 6th was taken at Selby (3). Les won the ‘Ladies Race’ and also received the ‘Keith Adamson (Butchers) Trophy’ to add to his trophy haul.

Ricky Cush enjoyed his season winning 1 x 1st, 3 x 2nds, 3 x 3rds, 1 x 4th, 3 x 5th, 1 x 6th scoring 43pts to bank £72. Ricky’s first points of the old bird season were achieved at Melton Mowbray (2) when 2nd Club, 34th Fed and 36th Section was netted. His second blue card was potted at Huntingdon (2) and that was followed up a week later by taking 3rd spot at Melton Mowbray (3), Ricky took 5th at the Maidstone National before netting the green at Eastbourne. Ricky a onetime Skinningrove H/S member was back in the points at Newton Abbot when 4th Club and 28th Fed was notched up. The lad flew a notable young bird this time around, chalking in five of the nine races. With his first young bird points coming at Selby (2) when 2nd was taken, this was followed up a week later by netting 3rd at Mansfield (1). After missing out at Mansfield (2) The lad hit the winners’ enclosure at Melton Mowbray, two weeks later at Rivenhall 5th was notched up and a couple of thimbles were filled at the Maidstone National to chalk up 5th and 6th. Ricky who also won the young bird of the year trophy with a Mick Smithies Marcelis x Soontjen x T. Cruxon Stichelbaut cock, who took 3rd Mansfield (1), won 1st Melton Mowbray, netted 5th Rivenhall and potted 6th Maidstone. Ricky’s best performance in the Six Bird Club was when he won 1st Club, 2nd Fed, 3rd Section and 21st UNC Clermont in 2004 when there were 11,585 birds competing.

Mr & Mrs Graham ‘Golly’ & Linda Peirson flew from a new loft location this year, after being moved to a new plot due to new houses being built on their patch of land. Golly missed the start of the season because of this, the lad had a new loft built and settled the birds into their new loft a short distance from their previous allotment. Once Golly & Linda got underway they won 2 x 1sts, 2 x 2nds, 1 x 3rd, 2 x 4ths, 2 x 5ths, 2 x 6ths chalking up 38pts to net £66. The duo’s first old bird points were netted at the Folkestone National when 6th was notched up, this was quickly followed up a week later at Melton Mowbray (2) when a most impressive 1st Club, 5th Fed out of 2,448 birds and 5th Section from a convoy of 3,929 birds was won. Golly & Linda potted the yellow at Lillers and took 5th at Rivenhall (2) to give them four positions from four races. The duo’s next points were pocketed at Eastbourne when 6th was picked up, a week later at Melton Mowbray (4) a couple of chambers were filled to win 1st and 4th. Two more birds were in the clock at Newton Abbot to chalk up a notable 2nd and 3rd Club, 25th and 27th Fed. Golly & Linda were in the clock for the fourth consecutive race at Maidstone when a single bird was timed to take 5th position. It looked like Golly & Linda were flying a new system with the old birds, the four on four off system after scoring in four races, missing out on four and carding in the last four old bird races. Golly & Linda scored twice with the youngsters with 5th Club, 21st Fed and Section being achieved at Selby (1), and the blue being potted at the Maidstone National. Golly another ex Skinningrove member has very limited time with the birds due to work commitments, the lad always seems to be taking mobile phone call whenever talks to his Pigeon pals.  While Linda’s time is spent with her show dogs travelling to and from shows up and down the Country.

Former Eaglescliffe secretary Les Rees joined forces with Brian Stone & Brian McCormick this season flying in the partnership of Rees, Stone & McCormick. The lads’ were the winners of 1 x 1st, 2 x 2nds, 1 x 3rd, 4 x 4th, 1 x 5th, 3 x 6th scoring 37pts to collect £48. The lads’ scored from the first-three old bird races with them filling a couple of thimbles at Selby to lift 4th and 6th, with their yellow card potter going onto net 31st Fed. Then 3rd Club, 16th Fed and 33rd Section was chalked up at Mansfield. Les & Brian Mac hit the winners’ enclosure at Melton Mowbray (1) when their red card winner went onto score 15th Fed from 3,259 birds and also going onto pocket 20th Section from an entry of 5,652 birds. After being out of the points at Huntingdon (1) the partnership returned to the frame at Rivenhall (1) to pot the yellow, this was followed up by picking up 6th Rivenhall (2). A steady young bird was flown with the boys scoring from five of the races, starting with a notable 2nd Club, 4th Fed and Section Selby (1). Then 6th was collected at Selby (2) and the yellow was potted at the back-to-back Melton Mowbray and Bourn races, 2nd was netted a week later at Rivenhall and 5th was notched up at Selby (3). The loft performances have improved this year, I’m sure Les & Brian Mac are going to come good once they have established themselves.

Mr & Mrs John & Cathy Richardson were the winners of 2 x 1sts, 1 x 3rd, 2 x 4ths, 2 x 5ths, 2 x 6ths and 28pts lifting £42. John & Cathy kicked off the season by filling a couple of birds from the Selby Open race to win 1st and 2nd Club, the duo also potted the green at Melton Mowbray (1). Then 5th was notched up at the Folkestone National and 6th was taken at Lillers, once again John & Cathy topped the Club charts at Bourges with their red card winner going onto score a most impressive 4th Fed out of 231 birds and also netting 16th Section when there were 414 birds competing. Two weeks later when the birds were being basketed for Clermont the Bird Flu forced the channel race to be cancelled, so the UNC raced from Eastbourne with John & Cathy filling a couple of cells to win 1st and 5th. The partnership were back in the frame at Maidstone to pot the yellow, the duo were 4th again at young bird Selby (1) when their yellow card-scoring youngster went onto chalk up 8th Fed and Section. Denise Cush presented the ‘Shirley Waters Memorial Trophy’ to John & Cathy for their Bourges win, this new trophy was donated by Jim and family as this was always Jim’s main race of the season which he won many times over the years. John & Cathy also received the lowest winning velocity trophy for their Bourges win, along with the channel average which they have won a number of times in their short time in the Club. John & Cathy have been noted for their Bourges performances with them winning 1st Club, 3rd Fed and 54th UNC in 2004 out of an entry of 2,123 birds. The duo won Bourges for the second year running in 2005 when their red card winner went onto win 1st Fed and 69th UNC when there were 1,886 birds competing. Bourges win number three off the belt was achieved in 2006 with their chart-topper scoring 2nd Fed and 22nd Combine from a convoy of 2,825 birds. Four consecutive Bourges wins that was achieved in 2007 is something very special, even more special from a small back garden loft flying in a six bird Club. These very impressive performances at Club, Fed and Combine level were achieved by fantastic Pigeons owned and raced by two equally fantastic fanciers who get the very best out of their birds from 540 miles.

Onetime Six Bird Club secretary Dave Wilson flew a notable old bird this season with the lad winning 2 x 1sts, 3 x 2nds, 1 x 3rd, 1 x 5th and 33pts picking up £78. Dave potted the blue at the Folkestone National and followed that up the week after by notching up 5th spot. Dave recorded his first of two old bird wins at Lillers, the first channel race of 2007 when his red card winner went onto score 23rd Fed when there were 1,311 birds competing. Huntingdon (2) saw Dave pot the green, the lad scored his second lot of channel points at Bourges when his blue card scorer went onto chalk up 9th Fed and 27th Section. Win number two of the old bird season was achieved at the Maidstone National, and 2nd was netted at Eastbourne to give Dave 1 x 1st and 2 x 2nds in three races. The right honourable Vic Garbutt was the scorer of 1 x 2nd, 1 x 3rd, 1 x 4th, 1 x 5th, 2 x 6ths and 20pts pocketing £18. Vic’s first prize-card of the campaign was achieved at Melton Mowbray (1) when 5th was taken; the lad notched up 6th a week later at Huntingdon (1) and then potted the green the following week when the birds were at Rivenhall (1). Vic returned to the frame at Rivenhall (2) when the green was chalked up, Melton Mowbray (3) saw Vic time a couple of birds to net 5th and 6th. The lad’s highest position of the season was achieved at the Maidstone National when 2nd was scored; Newton Abbot brought 5th Club and 30th Fed. Vic became the first fancier to receive the ‘B & K Simpson Trophy’ for the fancier with most points without a win. Vic seemed very surprised and well please about winning a trophy he didn’t know existed. Bill Ward & g/son Shaun who fly in the partnership of W & S Ward were the winners of 2 x 1sts, 1 x 4th, 1 x 5th, 1 x 6th and 18pts collecting £36. Bill & Shaun carded once with the old birds with that coming a Mansfield when 6th was picked up. A couple of chambers were filled at young bird Bourn to win 1st and 5th, the duo recorded their second win of the season at Selby (3) the final race of the season. Bill & Shaun had a quite year compared to their good winning start in 2006, the duo have the winter months to work out their strategy for 2008.

Jim Waters & son James carded twice with the young birds scoring 1 x 2nd, 1 x 4th and 8pts netting £12. Jim & James potted the blue at Melton Mowbray and took 4th at the young bird Maidstone National. Jim & James who won 1st Club, 1st Fed and 32nd UNC Lillers in 2006 from a convoy of 20,591 birds have enjoyed success in the past with them winning Bourges a number of times over the years, with their distance family topping the Fed and scoring some top UNC positions. Merv Pearson & Son netted 1 x 3rd, 1 x 6th and 5pts picking up £6, Merv notched up 6th at old bird Rivenhall (1) and chalked up a well-earned 3rd Club, 5th Fed and Section young bird Selby (1). Merv was hobbling around for most of the season but seems to be getting around a little better now. The new-formed partnership of Mick ‘Chukka’ Ovington, Bob Laker, Merv Brown & Sacka Cole scored 1 x 5th and 2pts, with the lads’ taking 6th at old bird Huntingdon (1). I thought these boys would have pushed for the top this season; they must have saved their best for the Homing Society. Darren J Waters netted 1 x 6th and 1pt, with Darren’s single position being taken at old bird Melton Mowbray (4).

After the presentation of the silverware I thanked the members for inviting Brian & myself along to present the trophies, for those who never won this season better luck in 2008. After presenting flowers to Val, Carole & Sheila, the members then presented flowers to Barbara for all the hard work assisted by Bob throughout the year. Any previous or present secretaries will tell you it is a job and a half, which often results in very difficult times. I honestly believe any secretary that takes up the post is always going to be judged on the previous secretary. Well one things for sure the Brotton Six Bird Club has had a number of brillient secretary’s in it’s time, and Barbara Moore certenly comes into that category. It was time to hand over to Brenda Reilly who gives her time in raising money for the successful ‘Ladies Race’, where she picks all the prizes. Birthday girl Brenda (yet another 21 candles on the cake) was presented with flowers for all the hard work she puts into the well-run event, which always offers some fantastic prizes. Rachael Cush was also thanked for her work in running the weekly raffle for Club funds, some of the money raised this year went to purchasing new trophies. One thing for sure the members always put any money raised always goes to good use, either buying new trophies or new baskets whenever needed. After the Ladies Race winners wife’s had picked their prizes the disco followed, with a number of the crowd getting up on the dance floor. The 2008 young bird raffle and prize raffle took place half way through, then it was back to dancing the night away for the in the mood family and friends. Once again I would like to thank the members for inviting Brian, Val, Carole and yours truly along for another great night, a night that always goes down well with the children playing a big part in another successful night. We would like to wish the members all the very best of racing in 2008, and please make it a special one. Any news to Good Corn at 139 Zetland Row Skinningrove Saltburn Cleveland TS13 4BN.
