EAST CLEVELAND FEDERATION

Brotton HS Presentation Evening
January always brings the Brotton Homing Society prize presentation evening. This time the do was on Friday 12th and as usual the venue was the Hunley Hall Golf Club Brotton. There was another very good turnout with a number on new faces attending the Clubs big night; the presentation evening seems to get more popular each year.
After the main meal the hard working Club secretary Terry Callan took to the floor to welcome everyone to the Club's prize presentation night, including guests Carole & me, Bill & Sheila Dowey the East Cleveland Federation Secretary. Terry then gave a run down on the 2006 racing seasons performances, giving credit to the winners. Terry then handed over to Chairman Bill Heslop who also gave praise to Bill, Terry & myself, the lad then asked me, followed by Bill Dowey to present the prizes. A new trophy was donated this time and presented by brothers Stuart & Keith Arkless, with the trophy being the Jim Arkless Memorial Trophy. Both Stuart & Keith had enjoyed much success flying in partnership with their late father. I honestly believe that Jim brought a new dimension to Pigeon racing when he started flying in the East Cleveland Federation, his whole set-up and twice a-day training made him a very hard man to beat. The Arkless family’s outstanding performances throughout the 1960s and 70s brought them 1st Up North Combine success, if anyone talked about Pigeons, then you were sure to hear Jim Arkless’ outstanding loft performances mentioned. After the presentation of the silverware gifts were presented to Carole, Sheila Dowey, Jean Callan & Pam Heslop. Karrots Mobile Disco & Karaoke followed next, a few numbers were played before the Karaoke got underway. One or two of the lads’ and lasses took to the floor to sing out their favourite tunes, as previous years there is always a prize for best singer and a special prize for the world’s worst singer. The brother & sister duo of Wayne & Jackie Reilly came out the Karaoke champs, with them winning a bottle of wine. I thought young ‘Karaoke Jack’ performed well and must have been narrowly beaten for the title. Everyone should know by now who won the worst singer award, Graham Wattis was his usual rubbish self. Mind you he did spit his dummy out and contested the judges verdict, his outburst of ‘Dave Jones was worse than me’ did not change the outcome as the judge was unmoved by his outcry. Everyone agreed that Watto was without doubt the worst ever singer, Dave can’t have been that bad as he received a well-done kiss from his good lady Kirsty. If I’d known Dave was going to get a reception like that, I would have got up and made a fool of myself for the same kiss. The raffle followed and the rest of the night was spent either listening or dancing to the music, with everyone enjoying a great night, Carole thanks the members for her gift. Iv’e just remembered the time Graham Wattis presented a trophy to Kirsty at a previous payout, after Graham had stuck the lips on Kirsty; I was unable to take a photo for some reason. I asked them to stay where they were while I played about with the camera, after I said I was ready to take the photo Dave shouted out in fun, ‘Wattis if you kiss her again you will have me to deal with’. We have enjoyed many a laugh about that night over the years, I can still see the expression on Watto’s face. Anyway that’s enough of that, now for the list of prizewinners.
Top loft for 2006 was Reg Wilson, Ray Mole & Partners, who get help around the loft from Dennis. Reg & Ray enjoyed an absolutely fantastic season winning 10x1st, 12x2nd, 6x3rd, 2x4th, 3x5th, 10x6th and 166pts. The jubilant duo and Reg’s grandson Jack received the Channel Average, Old Bird Combined Average, Combined Average, Champions Trophy, Classic Average, Bird Of The Year Trophy, W. Rigg Memorial Trophy, T. Clayton Memorial Trophy, The £1 Trophy, Selby Old Bird Trophy, Lowest Winning Velocity Trophy, Young Bird Derby, Young Bird Knock-Out Trophy, Retford Old Bird Trophy, L. Riddiough Trophy, Huntingdon (1) Trophy, Metcalf Cup, Chapman Cup, Eddie Ward Memorial Trophy, Hatfield (3) Cup, C. Nicholson Shield, R. Wright Memorial Cup, Hatfield (3) Trophy, Young Bird Retford (2) Trophy, Grantham Young Bird Trophy, r/u Old Bird Inlands Average and r/u Young Bird Average. Reg & Ray hit winning form from the off by winning 1st Club and 10th Fed old bird Selby. Win number two off the belt was achieved at Mansfield when a couple of cells were filled to win 1st and 3rd Club, 5th and 12th Fed when there were 3,513 birds competing. A single bird was in the clock a week later at Melton Mowbray (1) to notch up 5th position. Retired self-employed Joiner Reg & Ray the Scaffolder returned to the winners’ enclosure at Huntingdon to record their third win in four races, the red card winner went onto chalk up 5th Fed when there were 3,256 birds away. The duo took 6th Club and 38th Fed out of Brooklands (1) National and won 1st Club and 6th Fed at the substitute channel race North Weald out of an entry of 1,853 birds, the pole position winner also chalked up 9th North Yorkshire & East Cleveland Section and a very impressive 10th Up North Combine from a convoy of 20,721 birds. The partnership were in the points for the seventh race running at Melton Mowbray (2) when 6th was notched up, and 6th was taken again the following week at North Weald. Brooklands saw the lads’ pocket 4th Club and 24th Fed. The long time fanciers were out of the points at Newark but hit back at Huntingdon (2) after timing a couple of birds to win 1st and 2nd Club, 7th and 18th Fed from an entry of 1,769 birds, the red and blue card winners went onto chalk up 7th and 21st Section when there were 2,845 birds competing. The inform Reg & Ray had scored in all eleven races so far with them winning five of them, their birds were making a name for themselves and they continued to do so at Lillers, the first of three channel races. Reg & Ray filled two cells for the second race running to win 1st and 2nd Club, 12th and 21st Fed when there were 911 birds away, the two timers also went onto score 15th and 32nd Section out of 1,623 birds, 49th and 189th UNC from a convoy of 13,804 birds. The Brooklands (2) National brought 2nd and 6th Club, with the blue card potter going onto lift 23rd Fed. Reg & Ray have always given Bourges the longest race of the programme their best shot over the years with them winning the 540 miles race a number of times over the years. This year they came up trumps once again with them filling three chambers to win 1st, 2nd and 3rd Club, 9th, 22nd and 25th Fed when there were 165 birds competing. I was surprised Reg & Ray failed to get a bird home in race time from Bourges in 2005 despite there only being five clocked in race time, even thou I did say my money was on them to win it. On saying that my later comments were that my double money would be on them in 2006, their record from Bourges over the years speaks volumes with many wins achieved along the way. Reg & Ray celebrated two wins on the same day for they timed another three birds at Melton Mowbray (3) to win 1st, 2nd and 6th Club, 6th, 9th and 28th Fed out of an entry of 1,667 birds. The duo’s first couple of timers went even further to chalk up a notable 7th and 12th Section when there were 2,600 birds competing. The lads’ won their third consecutive race at Melton Mowbray (4), the final old bird inland race of the season to record their ninth red card of the campaign. Their pole position winner went onto score a very impressive 3rd Fed from an entry of 1,905 birds and 12th Section from a convoy of 2,300 birds. The partnership were in the points again at Clermont after clocking a couple of birds within 14 seconds to net 2nd and 3rd Club, 4th and 5th Fed, 5th and 6th Section; the partnership also timed two later birds to pocket 28th and 31st Fed.
Top prizewinners, Jack, Ray & Reg receiving silverware from Bill Dowey.
After being through a fantastic old bird season where 9x1st Clubs were won and only being out of the frame once in 17 races from the distance of 52 miles to 540 miles, what was in store for them with the young birds? The lad’s scored in 8 of the 9 races chalking up 16 positions, which was some fete after enjoying such an outstanding old bird campaign. The loft was out of the frame at Selby (1) but were in the points at Selby (2) timing a couple of babies to score 2nd and 3rd Club, 8th and 10th Fed, 11th and 14th Section. Two later youngsters were clocked to notch up 22nd and 40th Fed and 29th Section. Newark (1) saw two cells filled to pot 2nd and 6th, with the blue card potter going onto lift 36th Fed. Reg & Ray’s youngster hit winning form at Newark (2) after no fewer than four birds were timed to win 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th Club, 10th, 19th and 26th Fed from 1,796 birds. The boys who had hit double figures for the season followed that up by timing a single bird at Melton Mowbray (1) to collect 6th place. Next stop was Huntingdon where 2nd and 3rd was chalked up with their blue card scorer going onto take 11th Fed and 19th Section. Moving onto Melton Mowbray (2) where a single cell was filled to take 5th Club and 34th Fed. Race number 8 of the young bird campaign brought 2nd and 5th Club, 14th and 32nd Fed, with the blue card scoring baby also netting 17th Section. Reg & Ray’s first class season came to a close at Selby (3) where a couple of more birds were timed to chalk up 2nd and 6th Club, 2nd and 31st Fed and Section. It has taken a while for Reg & Ray to have this good of a season but they have never ever given up with them always having faith in their birds. Breeds have come and gone but whatever strain they have housed they have always given their best, be it inland or the channel. Reg & Ray have won the channel average a number of times through the years from the distance of 300 to 500 miles, this season saw an all around loft performance right the way through the season. We all hope and dream of a top season and this time Reg & Ray have achieved just that, will they top this? We will just have to wait and see, if this seasons performances are never bettered, they can look back and savour the magic moments of 2006.
Mr & Mrs Bob & Barbara Moore enjoyed a great season winning 6x1st, 3x2nd, 6x3rd, 4x4th, 6x6th, 3x6th and 102pts to become the Clubs second highest prizewinners. Bob & Barbara were the winners of the Vaux Young Bird Average, F Reilly Memorial Trophy, Peterborough (2) Trophy, Young Bird Selby (1) Cub, Dr Cauley Cup, Bortner Young Bird Cup, K Adamson Shield, Jim Arkless Memorial Trophy, Melbourne Motors Trophy, T Shaw Memorial Trophy and r/u Combined Average. The duo’s first chalk of 2006 was achieved at the Brooklands (1) National when 3rd Club and 22nd Fed was netted. Bob & Barbara hit the winners’ enclosure in great style at Newark after three chambers were filled to win an impressive 1st, 2nd and 5th Club, 1st, 18th and 29th Fed out of an entry of 111,9 birds. The red and blue card winners also went onto chalk up 3rd and 28th Section when there were 1,900 birds competing. Bob & Barbara had a couple of birds in the frame at Huntingdon (2) a week later to pocket 5th and 6th, they also notched up 5th Club and 33rd Fed at the Brooklands (2) National. Bob & Barbara’s youngsters made an explosive impact scoring in seven of the nine young bird races to chalk up an incredible 21 position, the partnership are making a habit of churning out some outstanding young bird performances. The duo hit the winners’ enclosure at Selby (1) after a couple of thimbles were filled to win 1st and 5th Club, the red card winning baby went onto pocket 22nd Fed when there were 3,022 birds away. After being out of the frame at Selby (2) a single bird was clocked at Newark (1) to take 3rd Club and 37th Fed. No points were scored at Newark (2) but Bob & Barbara hit back in vengeance a week later at Melton Mowbray (1) when no fewer than four chambers were filled to win a awesome 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Club, the first three timers that were clocked 28 seconds apart went onto pot 23rd, 24th and 29th Fed when there were 1,673 birds competing and also collected 28th, 30th and 36th Section from a convoy of 2,850 birds. Win number two on the trot was achieved at Huntingdon when three youngsters were timed to win 1st, 4th and 6th, the chart-topping youngster that won the Club by a good minute went onto chalk up a notable 6th Fed from 1,869 birds and 10th Section when there were 3,103 birds away. The inform Bob & Barbara had their youngsters on song again a week later at Melton Mowbray (2) with no less than four birds in the frame to lift 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th Club, 18th, 19th 31st and 39th Fed, 21st, 22nd and 38th Section. Bob & Barbara’s on fire youngsters were leaving a trail of destruction behind them and things did not change at the Maidstone National when they won 1st, 3rd and 4th Club, 4th, 16th and 30th Fed when there were 1,401 birds competing, with the red and green card winning babies also going onto lift 5th and 19th Section out of an entry of 2,317 birds. Bob & Barbara’s chart-topping youngster did not finish there for 69th UNC was scored from a convoy of 16,490 birds. Bob & Barbara’s youngsters had won from the start of the young bird season so with them providing top performances throughout there was no reason why they should not be there at the end, and they didn’t disappoint, because Bob & Barbara timed four birds at Selby (3) to win 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th Club, 1st, 14th, 19th and 23rd Fed out of 896 birds and 1st, 14th, 19th and 23rd Section when there were 1,570 birds competing to finish off a brillient young bird season. Bob & Barbara are starting to get a family of Pigeons together, with them really making an impact this time around. They have introduced new birds in the past couple of years and they still have their old Busschaert bloodlines that have performed very well over a number of years.
Barbara Moore receiving the Jim Arkless Memorial Trophy from Keith & Stuart Arkless.

Bill Heslop’s loft helper Les Rigg holding silverware.
Mick Smithies has enjoyed much improvement in his racing performances the past 3 years, with the lad-performing better with the old birds. Mick returned to the frame at Melton Mowbray (3) where 4th Club, 22nd Fed and 36th Section was taken, a couple of later birds were timed within 5 seconds to notch up 39th and 40th Fed. I don’t know if Mick changed his young bird system this time around, for his babies performed well early doors with the lad scoring seven times in the first four young bird races. Selby (1) saw a couple of babies timed within 6 seconds to lift 3rd and 4th Club, 37th and 39th Fed. Two more youngsters were in the clock at Selby (2), this time clocked within 12 seconds of each other to chalk up 4th and 6th Club and a notable 11th and 16th Fed, 15th and 21st Section. Mick ‘Chukka’ Ovington & Bob Laker netted five times throughout the 2006 racing-season, with the two lads’ scoring 1x3rd, 1x4th, 1x5th and 2x6th. The duo were in the clock at the second attempt when a single bird was timed at old bird Mansfield to lift a useful 4th Club and 18th Fed. The partnership filled a couple of chambers at Huntingdon (1) to chalk up 3rd and 6th, when their green card potter went onto pocket 19th Fed. A week later at the Brooklands (1) National 5th Club and 33rd Fed was collected; the boys were in the frame for the third consecutive race at North Weald to take 6th Club, 34th Fed and 107th UNC. The two lads’ get not score in the Club with the young birds but they did pocket 25th Fed and 32nd Section Selby (2).
In their first season in the Club, the Brotton Six Bird Club’s Bill & Shaun Ward chalked up 2x2nd. Bill and grandson Shaun’s first blue card of the campaign came at old bird Mansfield when a impressive 9th Fed was netted, a second bird was timed to lift 40th Fed to give them a good start in their new Club. Bill & Shaun recorded their second blue card of the season at Selby (1) when their youngster notched up 30th Fed. I have not forgotten about Bill’s granddaughter Chloe’s photo, I have added her photo to this report after missing it out of the Brotton Six Bird Club’s do due to not knowing her name at the time. Chloe has spent some time is Australia with her family recently; apparently she arrived there too late to help the England cricket retain the Ashes. Just getting them to perform would have been a vast improvement, they would have been better off sending Bill out there for he could bowl them over in his day.

Stuart & Joy Arkless scored three times winning 1x1st, 1x5th, 1x6th and 9pts, with the duo receiving the young bird Selby (2) Trophy for their win. The pole position winning baby also went onto chalk up a most impressive 5th Fed out of 3,418 birds and 7th Section from a convoy of 5,781 birds, a second bird was timed to lift 21st Fed and 27th Section. The duo were in the frame at Newark (2) to notch up 5th spot, and they also took 6th at the Maidstone National. Jim Waters & Sons netted twice with the first of their 5pts coming at Brooklands when 5th place was taken, the partnership went one better the following week at Newark to pot the yellow.
The right honourable Vic Garbutt netted a 5th and 2pts with that being achieved at North Weald. Vic showed some promise in 2005 but things never went right for him this time around. I believe Vic was saving all his best performances for the Thursday night dominoes in Loftus Club, the lad and his sharing partner Hedgy Johnson of Skelton were proving to be tough nuts to crack. If only Vic could have exchanged his dominoes performances for his Pigeons performances he would have certenly being top dog.
Vic ‘Dominoes’ Garbutt, Graham Wattis & Brian McCormick, planning their 2007 assault.
Merv Pearson & Son notched up 2pts with them being netted at young bird Selby (2) when 5th Club and a notable 12th Fed were pocketed. Brian Stone & Brian McCormick potted 23rd Fed and 30th Section from the same race.
