Skinningrove Presentation Evening

Skinningrove Homing Society held their 2006 prize presentation evening at the village pub, Timms Coffee House on Saturday 25th November. Guests for the night were Colin & Glenda Linford and Tom & Charlotte Hawksfield.  Colin a former Skinningrove H/S member was a onetime partner of Dennis ‘Chick’ Murrell, with one of the duo’s memorable performances coming from Bourges in 1970 when they won 1st Club, 1st Fed and 22nd UNC from a convoy of 5,220 birds. Chick was picking a few strawberries when their winner arrived, once Chick had spotted the bird he threw the strawberries up in the air and run to clock the pole position winner in. Colin later went into partnership with Bill Hewison, flying as Linford & Hewison. Colin & Glenda have attended the Clubs payout night for the past few years, after the 2005 payout Glenda decided to run a raffle for Club funds, which thankfully raised £40.00. Tom & Charlotte have presented the silverware for the past two years, the Beach Road Fisheries owners kindly donated two new trophies in 2005, with a cash donation going to the trophy winners in both 2005 and 2006. The pole position winner also went onto score 3rd North Yorkshire & East Cleveland Section and 21st UNC. If my memory serves me right, Gordon, Sack & Jim’s winner was the first Bourges winner timed on the night in the Club since 1994. The lads’ chalked up 18th Fed at old bird Selby and notched up 6th Club at Clermont. Pigeons have been in the family for years with Gordon flying in different partnerships in his time. Gordon who won the M.B.E. for his services in the local Coastguards has enjoyed much success in his time in the sport. The lad has enjoyed some great performances from Bourges and this season must have brought back many happy memories in racing. Sack has always tried his best from the channel with Bourges being his main race to win, so understandably Sack was overjoyed with his Fed win. It was the only time in years that I was not at the loft for the Bourges race, as there were already 4 people at the loft I decided to visit Jeff Murphy instead.

The partnership of Gordon Peirson & Son Jim are the previous winners of 1st UNC old bird Wednesday Folkestone National in 1994. Brian ‘Brunks’ Laity’s was the winner of 1x1st and 5pts, with the lad’s old bird Mansfield red card winner that topped the Club charts by 3 minutes to win the ‘Vaux Trophy’ going onto win a most impressive 1st Fed when there were 3,513 birds competing. Brian started his racing in Skinningrove as a youngster and later raced at Loftus, before moving onto Carlin How. It was while he was at Carlin How he teamed up with Albert Breckon, flying as Breckon & Laity. The two lads’ more than won their share in their time together, with the duo’s greatest moment being achieved in 1983 when 3rd and 11th UNC old bird Eastbourne was won from a convoy of 18,609 birds. This outstanding performance won Albert & Brian the ‘Danish Cup Of Friendship’ for the best 2-bird performance. Bobby McConnell chalked up 1x3rd and 3pts when his young bird Selby (2) green card potter netted 36th Fed. Albert Breckon the previous winner of 1st UNC Brussels (1) in 2001 with Galileo from a convoy of 11,870 birds, netted 1x4th and 2pts with the yellow being taken at Clermont when 33rd Fed was taken. Mr & Mrs Bernard & Christine Powls were the scorers of 1x5th and 1pt with the duo’s single prize card being achieved at young bird Selby (1) when their blue Busschaert cock went onto pot 24th Fed.
