“The Original” Around The Up North Combine
By Good Corn
The Up North Combine first of seven young bird races got under way on Saturday 1st August when Group 3 which consists of East Cleveland (1,679 birds), North Yorks (1,876 birds), Middlesbrough & District (753 birds), Teesside (697 birds), Tees Valley (775 birds), Hartlepool (731 birds) and South East Durham (1,189 birds) Federations convoy of 7,700 birds were liberated from Bubwith (1) at 7.40am flying into a South-West wind. Starting at the very top where I received information from Dez Williams and his loft helping mate Roger Wall of Skelton Green H/S where the duo won a earth-shattering 1st Club, 1st East Cleveland Federation (56 members) and 1st Group 3. With Demolition Dez & Roger's pole position winner being a dark pied cock recording a chart-topping vel of 1508 with the sire being bred by Graham, Gilchrist & Brennan of Boldon, Mid Tyne Federation fame gifted to Dez & Roger by former Clubmate Derek Winspear, while the dam was bred by Dave (I & D) Maddison of Hartlepool H/S fame that was gifted to the two lad's by Tess Collinson of Guisborough. A few hours after Dez & Roger's outstanding win they were on their way to their local to watch the F A Cup final where Dez's favourite team Arsenal saw off Chelsea to win the cup. Dez who sadly recently lost his father Tike once said to me at one of the Clubs presentation evenings “if it weren’t for the likes of me, there wouldn’t be any winners”. I have remembered that saying time and time again over the years, Dez loves his Pigeons and keeps on sending win or lose, and it's times like this that makes it all worth while.
Roger Wall & Dez Williams of Skelton Green H/S winners of 1st Club, 1st East Cleveland Fed, 1st Group 3 Bubwith (1) 7,700 birds.

There were reports of some very heavy losses from this group liberation at the end of the day, with very few turning up the following morning, while others had good or 100% returns. A number of youngsters have since being reported from all parts of the Country, young Kyle Douglass who runs the Whitby Stray Centre is doing a fantastic job getting birds transported up to Whitby by very caring fanciers who are going out of their way picking birds up. Once Kyle has sorted the strays out the likes of Darren “Daz” Frost of the Pigeon Arch Corn Store in Middlesbrough collects the birds that are from his area and takes them to his Corn Store for their owners to collect. It's being amazing how many man hours by so many has gone into making the Whitby Stray Centre a great success. Well done all involved.
The second young bird race took place from Bubwith (2) on Saturday 8th August but not as a Group 3 liberation, the North Yorks and the East Cleveland Federation were liberated at 9.20am in a North wind that was going to be a tough fly for the youngsters. The losses were even greater than the previous race with the numbers missing from some lofts being unreal, and I must add like the previous week some top fanciers took a big hit.
