BURTON & SOUTH DERBYSHIRE FEDERATION.
MR & MRS JOHN DOWD TAKE 1ST FED FROM
CHELTENHAM.
Well the weekend of April 28th/29th is one I’d like to forget about. We were scheduled to race from Hullavington, but poor weather on the Saturday prevented a liberation.
Sunday didn’t see much of an improvement, apart from being a bit drier, but a strong ne wind and very cold air temperatures was the worry. It was decided to bring the birds nearer to home, so it was off to Cheltenham.
Our race advisor still wasn’t happy with the weather, so asked for the birds to be brought back to the clubs. what happened next, I don’t know, but it was decided it was ok to liberate at Cheltenham after all?
The strings were cut at 12-00 and the 1600 birds were liberated into a strong N.E. wind. It was said by a local in the Cheltenham racecourse area that our birds were still flying round the race point at 12-10 when he saw the peregrines go through them, this will be the major cause of the missing birds at nightfall, sadly there weren’t many back in the following days, personally we lost our best two cocks a 6yo and a 7yo?
The fact that the birds didn’t clear is probably the explanation why the top two fed birds were the furthest fliers in the fed on the east side? A poor start to a race always favours the farthest fliers?
Back to the race, and congratulations to John & Pamela Dowd of the Bulls Head Club, they took 1st fed on 1091 with a 2yo chequer hen. Clubmate F & T Salt Bros & Son were 2nd fed on 1083 with a yearling cock.
