Burton & South Derbyshire Federation - 24-05-21

Burton & South Derbyshire Federation.

D. Nesbitt & Sons make it 2 x 1st fed in 3 races, with a win out of Frome.

Once again the weather was unkind to us, with rain forecast for Saturday May 15th, the fed delayed marking by 24 hours.

91 members from 10 clubs sent 1802 birds to Frome, with heavy showers moving up from the south, an early lib was on the cards, and Alys cut the strings at 07:05 in a light SW wind, here at home the wind was S.S.E. the leading birds made light work of the journey with the west side lofts dominating the result. It was a strange race with plenty of empty perches, and a lot of the birds again over-shot their lofts and came back out of the north. They must have had a great start to achieve the velocities they did?.

It’s a possibility that our birds would have been over the Cheltenham area when the Staff Moorlands fed liberated at 08:00? I know that one South Derbyshire loft had a couple of birds in from the Stoke area. 52 miles split Cheltenham and Frome, and there was 55 minutes between the liberations.

Back to the race, and congratulations to D. Nesbitt & Sons of Hill Ridware on taking 1st; 2nd; 6th; 7th; and 9th fed on 1779; 1775; 1752; 1751; 1745; the fed topper was a 2yo granddaughter of their champion hen “Isla”; she was 2nd fed 2 weeks earlier; she is a spare hen, she just would not pair up.

She was followed by 4 more Heremans; 3 hens and a 2yo cock; the 5th bird, a direct daughter of “Isla” actually came with the first bird but the ETS missed her; it was only when Mark checked his clock he realised it was one time light. These Heremans are flying brilliantly for Mark.

Club mates R & G Jones & Batt were 3rd fed on 1765; Rich & Gordie timing in a yearling slatey cock off Graham Jones of Guisborough.

At Hill Ridware, 6 sent 106 and their first 9 all appeared in the top 11 of the fed result.

Well this Saturday (May 22nd) the forecast is for a dry day with a W.N.W. wind, this should see the birds coming more into the heart of the fed, time will tell? Unfortunately on the way down to Yeovil the transporter had a mechanical failure, which couldn’t be repaired on the Saturday. Repair was carried out on the Sunday morning, and the birds were taken to the nearest racepoint which was Hullavington. They were libbed at 10:50 in a strong S.S.W wind, and they tumbled in. So well done Alys on caring for the birds and giving the members a good race, on a testing and tedious weekend for our convoyer.
