SUPERB DOUBLE FOR COWAN & MCCARTNEY

 

The 2019 season drew to a close with the two Derby races from Skibbereen and I was all ready to go with the result of the first one when the result of the second one came in and what a result for the Dundonald partnership of Rob Cowan and George McCartney for not only did they win both events but they did it with the same pigeon a blue cock and with two very different velocities with the first one being won on 1251ypm and the 2nd one on 1979ypm but back to the start .

 

 

The first Skibbereen Derby saw the birds being released on Saturday 7th September at 10.45am into a NW wind which saw leading velocities in the 1200’s and George & Rob had two birds together the blue cock followed closely by a blue hen for 1st and 2nd Open they then had five more in the result at 8th ,14th,17th,31st and 32nd and this is a loft in really top Form for you will remember that the previous week from the Talbenny YB Derby they had finished 3rd open and had enjoyed a really super race with no less than a further 5 birds in the result at 5th ,10th 11th ,16th & 30th Open. For the last event of the year on the 14th September it was again Skibbereen and it was the Ken McConaghie Skibbereen YB Derby and again the Blue Cock of Cowan & McCartney was out in front this time from a 9am liberation into a southerly wind which saw the leading birds record velocities in the 1900’s

The winner of these two Skibbereen events was as I mentioned a blue cock a darkened Young Bird, he was racing roundabout a system adopted after the 5th Race and his breeding is through the partnerships good friend Stephen Brown of Dundonald being the bloodlines of Frank Tasker & Jeff Greenaway . The dam of this winning blue cock is the winner this year of the Meritorious Award for hens for Cowan & McCartney and this partnership have enjoyed a tremendous season and as most will recall they are previous winners of EDC Fanciers of the Year . In 3rd place from the first Skibbereen it was the Newtownbreda partnership of B Hogg & family followed by another loft in great form Dundonald’s Mark Foulis . In 5th and 7th it was C McManus & dtr of Crossgar with Bangor’s Reggie & David Moor in 6th spot .The full result of this and the Ken McConaghie Skibbereen Derbies is :

Congratulations to all the winner and at present I have details on the winner of 2nd Prize which was to Sam Regan of Ballywalter .This was a home bred darkness hen flying to the perch. Her Breeding is a Cattrysse cross carrying all the best of Shorelinelofts winning bloodlines Skibbereen was the 4th race of her life when she also won 1st Club . Skibbereen being a distance just short of 260 miles to Ballywalter.

Ken McConaghie Skibbereen YB Derby

The leading birds in this race saw some of the same lofts feature with the winner which we have talked about being that super blue of Cowan & McCartney . In 2nd and 3rd was the Bangor partnership of Reggie & David Moore who were 6th Open in the first Skibbereen having enjoyed another very consistent season .Their pigeon at 2nd Open was a Mealy Cock.

This young cock raced well all season having previously taken 1st Club, 7th Section and 14th Open from the 2nd Thurles and three other top 12 club positions. The dam of this cock is from their old No. 1 stock cock “Dakota 801” (G. Verheyen) when paired to a Leo Hereman’s hen, his Sire was a new stock cock for 2019 obtain from STS Lofts, and containing the best of the “Better Than Bolt” Hereman/Cuesters lines with a little Marina Van De Velde and Flor Engles. Interestingly this Mealy cock is the nest mate to J Young & Partners 9th Section, 12th Open from the 1st Skibbereen YB Derby which Jim purchased in a kit for racing.

The Moore’s second pigeon at 3rd Open is a Blue Cock and he is also a G/son of their old No.1 stock cock “Dakota 801” (G.Verheyen), his dam is a multiple 1st Prize winner and a direct dtr of “Dakota 801” his sire is also a 1st Prize winner and is from our Guido Verheyen/Willy Jacobs lines. This young cock is also a full brother to the mother of their 2015 Skibbereen Derby Winner.
