Roy Irwin 1st Open 2nd Fermoy

The East Down Combine were back to Fermoy on May 26th for the 2nd race from there this year . The wind this time had swung round to the East North East so it was going to be a much slower race than anything we had had so far this year . The convoy were in the air at 11am and the Open winner averaged just under 40 mph for the flight home with later birds returning up to near dark .

This week’s winner is Dundonald’s Roy Irwin clinching a 2nd x 1st Open win for the season but what a contrast in the two races ,Roy winning the Tullamore race on 1700 ypm showing his birds can perform well in differing conditions . The Newtownbreda partnership of R & R Lambe were in 2nd place with Ballylesson’s Alex Crawford 3rd and Bangor’s Reggie & David Moore at 4th open and with the first three all being West section birds Reggie & David also take 1st East Section ahead of Killyleagh’s McComb bros who were 5th open 2nd East Section with John Patterson 4th West Section 6th open . This week ,as we have come to the end of the Old Bird Inland racing for 2018 it is a good time to draw readers attention to some loft performances from around the Combine and this week I feature the performances this year so far of two such lofts and as I said a few weeks ago please forward me any such information ,photos etc which are always welcome . The first of these is;

Jackie Crossan ---Downpatrick Premier

Jackie is a former King’s Cup winner having won the coveted trophy in 1985 when we flew the North Road ,the race point that year being Lerwick when Jackie’s winner recorded a velocity of 605ypm . The Crossan lofts most recent success comes last week from the 2nd Fermoy on May 26th when Jackie was 1st Club ,10th open and 4th East Section EDC. This being a home bred pigeon from his own family .

The previous week from the Joe Ringland Skibbereen Classic he was again 1st club ,3rd Crossgar Centre ,14th open 4th East Section EDC with a pigeon bred by England’s John Wheatcroft

The loft was also 1st Club Tullamore and has had many other club places so far this season .He is pictured here at his home loft at Ardenlee with his granddaughter Emma.

R & G Thompson --Portavogie

Another loft enjoying their share of success this year is that of Glenn Thompson ,racing as R & G Thompson in the Portavogie club and their latest success was also from 2nd Fermoy where they won the club making it their 4th club win of the season having already won 1st club Mullingar, 1st Club 1st Fermoy and 1st club Mallow where they were 26th open .In addition they were 2nd club from both Tullamore and Thurles as well as 1st Fermoy . They are certainly having a great old bird inland season and our photograph shows Glenn Thompson with daughters Charlotte and Maisie .
