COMBINE YOUNG BIRD PROGRAMME GETS UNDERWAY

The East Down Combine Young bird programme for 2014 got underway with the first race from Navan on Sunday the 20th July delayed by 1 day, once again because of the weather, which as you can see had an effect on the overall entry and it is to be hoped that for the 2nd race of the season also from Navan that the weather will settle down for the last few races have been very difficult. Before looking at the Navan race, a look at how the Combine fared in the two INFC Nationals, the King’s Cup and the Friendship National, the latter being from Quimper whilst the King’s Cup was again flown from St Allouestre. Both these races were very difficult with neither completing the prize list.

Looking first at the King’s Cup a total of 40 birds homed in the 3 days of the race with two of these to Combine members. The first of these a 4 yo to the Ballynahinch partnership of W Catherwood & Sons who finished at 29th open 18th North section and win the East Down Combine Trophy. The other Combine loft to record an entry home was T Marshall & Son who finished 35th Open 22nd North section also with a 4 yo and both of these lofts have a proven record from these Nationals.

From the Friendship National from Quimper the total home in race time was 11 and there was one outstanding Combine bird to Sean & Jennifer Milligan of Tyrella who timed a yearling for 6th. Again this is a loft which excels from these nationals having won the Combine Cup in 2013 from St Allouestre when they finished at 13th open 12th North section with a 2 year old blue cheq hen.

Congratulations to these fanciers on their success from what proved to be two very difficult races in a season which has proved difficult almost on a weekly basis. I hope that further details on these and other outstanding performances of recent weeks will be forwarded on to me in the near future.

Returning to the first Young Bird race and as mentioned at the start, because of poor weather on the Saturday the young birds were race marked on Saturday evening but it was not until 12.45 on Sunday morning that the weather was suitable for a liberation with the convoy away into a light westerly wind with four clubs dominating the early times with Annalong on the coast having 5 of the top 6 places in the open and the partnership of John Trimble & son having 4 of these. Killyleagh’s Clifford Healy, who has enjoyed a great season so far, continues his success with 2nd Open from Navan this being of birds which race so well for him from Gregg Bros & McCandless, and both the dam and sire of this 2nd open Navan pigeon have each bred 3 winners so this season Clifford paired them together and Saturday’s 2nd Open winner is the result. The Dundonald and Crossgar clubs had the top places in the West section.

Terence Adair Memorial Breeder Buyer Exchange

The first flying of the Breeder/Buyer race set up in remembrance of Terence Adair of Cloughey the late husband of Olive our highly esteemed secretary will be flown from Tullamore the fourth young bird race of the season. This follows the ballot of young birds held in Portavogie in March by all those Peninsula Amalgamation members who entered pigeons and all birds were drawn by ballot. The prize money plus a trophy for the winning loft is as follows 1st £190. 2nd. £.110. 3rd. £80. Please make sure that your club secretaries make out a velocity for the B/B.ring numbered pigeon that was won in the draw. This should be forwarded to the Peninsula secretary as soon as possible after the race is flown. Good luck to all the Peninsula members who supported the first Memorial event in respect of Terence.

George McKinistry

We end this week with the sad news of the death of George McKinistry who raced with the Newtownbreda club and who over the years had many outstanding successes at Open level within the EDC and this included winning the old bird Derby three times. To his son Len and the wider family circle I extend my deepest sympathy at this time.
