Monday Blues For Many

EAST DOWN COMBINE

Reports by Clifford Browne

MONDAY BLUES FOR MANY

Penzance was the venue for the last old Bird Combine race scheduled for June 22nd before the old bird St. Malo Derby and again the great British weather was the chief factor that had to be considered. Unusually high winds and some rain had been forecast for that weekend so the East Down weather committee after considerable discussion opted for a Friday basketing with just the possibility of a liberation on the Sunday but as it turned out Sunday was not suitable so it was Monday before a release was possible and the birds were away at 8am into a NW wind. With the wind from the NW it was a testing event for the birds and many fanciers at the end of the day were suffering from the Monday Blues.

The leading birds were on their time with the top Combine velocity being 1190 to the Ballywalter partnership of Winston & Hugh McMaster who have been racing consistently all season. Runner up on 1160 was Joe McGreevy from Crossgar, with W & L Robinson at 3rd open. Top places in open and section were as below but it certainly did not turn out to be the race most had hoped for.

AROUND THE ARDS PENINSULA

Abbey Road Lofts record victory from 2nd Talbenny

The Peninsula members returned to Wales for their second race from Talbenny and again a head wind from the North East had to be faced for the birds to reach their lofts in the Ards Peninsula. Numbers fell by half due to the heavy losses made from last week's difficult race. Winning loft was Millisle club's top pigeon flown by Laurence Brown improving on his third Amalgamation place of the previous week timing the winner along with his second bird in 5th Amalgamation into his Abbey Road home, the first pigeon taking 6th position in the East section of the Combine and many congratulations to all the Brown family on their success. The East coast of the Ards Peninsula with the wind from the North East meant that the birds homing to their lofts followed a inland path up Ireland and turned East to return to reach home resulting in the velocities being poorer than were expected seeing the clear blue sky and bright conditions. Runner up is a Donaghadee bird, a 3 year old Blue pied hen Staf Van Reet flown by Kieron McCutcheon. This hen has been a top racer for the loft and was very well fancied, winning the club and the three bird and she won the corresponding race last year. Kieron timed a second pigeon a yearling son of his winning bird to take 8th into the Amalgamation to give an excellent return by this Van Reet family of pigeons. It's down to Portavogie with their club winner Leslie Young clocked two birds close together to be 1st and 2nd club and take 3rd and 7th Amalgamation to complete a good day for the Cloughey road fancier. Shoreline lofts clocked a well fancied two year old Blue Cattrysse Cock to take 4th Amalgamation. As well as winning its clubs D.T.W. the pigeon gave its owner Sam Regan of Ballywalter runner up spot in the three bird club to finish off a good result. Next two places are won by Jackie Rankin clocking two pigeons on the result sheet for 6th and 13th positions into his lofts at Ballybuttle close to his club situated in the seaside town of Millisle. These pigeons both contained Van Dyke bloodlines which have been very successful for Jackie gaining many top prizes. It's back to Portavogie with father and son team of Walker and Naill Cully continuing their good consistent form being third club and 9th in the Peninsula Amal. Millisle members Raymond and Michael Strain had two drop together into their lofts in the townland of Ballyhay for 10th and 11th. This father and son team finished off last season's old bird racing by winner the St. Malo French Derby with the East Down Combine and are looking strong as the French races approach. Donaghadee's Alec Trimble and family timed a yearling Janssen to be 3rd club and 12th Amalgamation and this loft has been very racing very steadily all season. The result is completed by the runners up in Ballywalter club with the Greyabbey road lofts of Billy Albert having to settle for second club following his victory of last week and 14th Amalgamation with a yearling Blue Cock.
