Mull April13john Patterson Gets The Combine Off to a Flying Start

EAST DOWN COMBINE

Reports by Clifford Browne

John Patterson gets the Combine off to a flying start

Well it was no surprise that the weather on the weekend of the 13th April was such that the EDC Committee decided on the Saturday to put racing back by one week, which was how we came to be in Mullingar on the 20th April. It proved to be a wise decision for the 20th was a great flying day with a South, South West wind which helped them home from Mullingar with the top open velocity being 1910 ypm. The convoy of 4361 birds were away at 9.15am and the leading birds were on the West side of the Combine with Ballylesson, Dundonald and Bangor getting the early ones.

It was Ballylesson’s John (JP) Patterson with the top three in the open and a 4th bird at 12th open these taking 1st 2nd 3rd and 8th West Section. Over in the East section it was Bangor’s Reggie and David Moore with the top 4 in the section with a further 5 in the section result. The top 4 in the section finishing 8th 9th 10th and 11th open. Dundonald’s Jim Young and Ptnrs 4th 6th and 7th open with Ballylesson’s A Cousins & sons 5th open. It was a good way to start the old bird season and it was nice to watch the birds finish as they came in very high and it is lovely to watch them drop to their lofts and returns were good.
