Old Bird Season Review 2021

Down at the Cabbage Patch the new season started with 1 new Member joining to fly Young Birds, but sadly we lost 3 members. One was Steve Williams, who left to fly North Road, with Doru Burlacu moving to the Luton area and the other to leave was Steve Sheffield who moved and had been a member since the Club was formed in the 1970s.

Race One kicked off on the 1st May, with the first race for the Inter Counties Fed being flown from Blandford. For this race 7 Members sent 132 birds which were liberated at 8.30 in a North East Wind. Taking the 1st & 2nd Positions was Geoff Barker with a Blue WF Lambrecht Cock, previously a winner of 6th Thames Valley Fed Newark & a Grizzle Lambrecht Cock, a past winner of 4th Club, 25th Inter Counties Fed Honiton 3232 birds. Taking 3rd Club was Steve Holloway with a Blue Staf Van Reet Cock, a son of “Pedro” a winner of 5x1sts. Geoff Barker took 4th Club with a Red Chequer Lambrecht Cock, a past winner of 4th Club,4th Thames Valley Fed Newark & 6th Club Retford., with 5th & 6th Spot’s going to Steve Holloway with a Blue Pied Cock & a Chequer Pied Cock both Van Reets.

Race 2 the following week we were Back at Blandford with the birds being marked Saturday Night for a Sunday Race. At the end of Marking 9 Members had sent 166 Birds which were Liberated at 1pm in a SW Wind. Our Winner this week was Peter Twyford with a Mealy Busschaert Cock picking up his first win. This is bred down from Peter’s 2nd UBI Combine Kingsdown winner. Taking 2nd, 3rd & 4th Positions was Geoff Barker with a Blue Hen , a Blue Chequer Cock & a Dark Chequer Hen all from Geoff’s Combine winning Lambrecht family. Finally in 5th & 6th is Steve Holloway with a Blue Hen & Chequer Hen both Van Reets.

Race 3 was flown from Yeovil with 9 Members sending 142 birds which were liberated at 9.30 in a SSW Wind. Geoff Barker continued with his early season form taking 1st & 2nd Club with a Grizzle Lambrecht Cock, previously 2nd Club Blandford, 4th Club Blandford & 25th Inter Counties Fed Honiton. And a Blue WF Lambrecht Cock 2nd Club Blandford last week. Third & Fourth spot went to Steve Holloway with a Blue Van Reet Cock, a son of “Pedro” a winner of 5x1sts & a Blue Pied Hen a Daughter of the above Cock & a G Daughter of “Pedro”. Fifth Club was Paul Stone with a Blue Braspenning Cock. Finally 6th Club went to Steve Holloway with a Red Chequer Van Reet Cock.

Race 4 Honiton was the next race to be flown which the members would be flying between 137-148 miles and at the end of Marking 9 Members had sent 173 birds. Taking 1st Club, 7th Inter Counties Fed 2659 birds was Geoff Barker with a Dark Chequer Lambrecht x Busschaert Hen, a past winner of 1st Club Blandford & 1st Club Blandford. Second & Third Club,13th & 29th Fed was Steve Holloway with a Blue Van Reet Hen and a Red Chequer Van Reet Cock. 4th Club was Mihai & Roxanna Piper with a Chequer Pied Hen, a Taveirne Rigole bred from pigeons obtained from Dave Ramsay of Hazelmere. 5th Club was Geoff Barker with a Blue WF Lambrecht  Cock, and in 6th Spot is Algis Tiatauris with a Blue Pied Janssen Hen.

Race 5 was a UBI Combine race flown from Wadebridge and 10 Members sent 151 birds which were Liberated at 7.45 in an East Wind.
Clocking up his First win of the season was Billy Watkins with a Chequer Pied Cock bred by Johnny Black of Stotfold. Paul Stone took 2nd Club with a Blue Chequer Janssen Hen. Third Club was Peter Twyford with a Mealy Busschaert Cock, bred down from Peter’s 1st UBI Kingsdown. 4th Club we had Peter Glass with a Blue Hen from his own family. Peter Twyford took 5th Club with a Red Chequer Busschaert Cock. The sire of this cock won 2x1sts as a Young Bird and is a brother to 3rd Club above. Finally 6th place was Paul Stone with a Blue Jan Loots x Soontjen Cock..

Race 6 was a Come Back race from Honiton & 8 Members sent 135 Birds which were released at 6.30 with no wind given at the Lib Site. In Pole Position we had Peter Glass with a Blue Cock bred from his own family. Second Spot was Geoff Barker with a Blue Lambrecht Hen, this hens best position taken being 1st Club,8th Inter Counties Fed, 8th UBI Combine 2045 birds. 3rd Club Mihai & Roxanna Piper with a Blue Braade De Joode Cock from pigeons given from Jim Courtney. Fourth Club was Steve Holloway with a Blue Van Reet Cock. 5th Spot was Mihai & Roxanna Piper with a Red Grizzle Cock purchased from Lier Market in Belgium, & Peter Glass takes 6th place with a Blue Cock from his own family.

Race 7 was due to be flown from Truro with the UBI Combine, but they were the taken to Wadebridge as the Convoyer was not happy with the lib site. For this race 9 Members sent 134 birds which were Liberated at 8am in a NW Wind. Peter Twyford took 1st & 2nd Club with a Red Chequer Busschaert Cock, a winner of 5th Club Wadebridge earlier in the season , And a Red Chequer Busschaert Cock a past winner of 1st Club Lyndhurst, 1st Club Lyndhurst, 1st Club Carentan, 2nd Club Honiton & 4th Club Blandford. Paul Stone took 3rd Place with a Blue  Braspenning Cock. Geoff Barker then took 4th with a Mealy Maarten Vinkenborg Cock, a steady pigeon who’s taken the following positions 1st Club Bordeaux, 3rd Club Poitiers & 4th Club Honiton. 5th Club Algis Tiatauris with a Blue Janssen Hen, and finally in 6th Position was Mihai & Roxanna Piper with a Blue Hen from Team Myloft.Ro Romania.

Race 8 was from Honiton and 8 Members sent 82 birds which were liberated at 10.30. Little did everyone know this would be a disaster for a lot of fanciers in this country with thousands of birds missing.  Billy Watkins took the top position this week with a Blue Cock. Taking 2nd & 3rd spots was Mihai & Roxanna Piper with a Red Grizzle Cock & a Blue Hen from Team Myloft.Ro Romania . Fourth Club was Peter Glass with a Blue Chequer Hen from his own family. 5th Club Algis Tiatauris with a Blue Pied Janssen Hen. Finishing off in 6th we had Mihai & Roxanna Piper once again with a Blue Hen from pigeons gifted by Billy Watkins

Race 9 was another UBI Combine race this was to be flown from Guernsey. Once on the Island the birds were all moved to another lib site which was roughly 2 miles shorter. These were liberated at 1.15 and for this race 8 Members sent 88 Birds.
Taking 1st Club, 3rd Inter Counties Fed, 3rd UBI Combine was Paul Stone with a Blue Chequer Jan Loots x Braspenning Cock. Peter Twyford took 2nd Club, 14th Fed & 14th UBI Combine with a Blue Busschaert Cock. Billy Watkins took 3rd Club, 31st Fed & 31st UBI Combine with a Blue Cock bred by Tony Cripps. 4th Club was Paul Stone with a Chequer Braspenning x Van Loon Cock. Fifth Spot was Peter Twyford with a Red Pied Busschaert Cock. Taking 6th was Geoff Barker with a Dark Chequer Lambrecht Hen.

Race 10 was flown from Honiton with 5 Members sending 58 Birds which were liberated at 13.50 in a SE Wind.
Taking 1st Club, 15th Inter Counties Fed we had Geoff Barker with a Dark Chequer Lambrecht Hen. In 2nd & 3rd place Paul Stone with a Blue Cock bred by Dave Ramsay of Hazlemere & a Blue Jan Loots x Braspenning Cock. Fourth Club was Geoff Barker with a Dark Chequer Lambrecht Cock. 5th Club Peter Twyford with a Mealy Busschaert Cock, with Geoff Barker taking 6th Club with a Dark Chequer Lambrecht Hen.

Race 11 was the final Old Bird race of the Season with the UBI Combine which was to be flown from Guernsey, with the shorter liberation site to be used once again. For this race 3 Members sent 35 Birds which were liberated at 8am in a Light East Wind. Top Spot was Geoff barker with a Red Chequer Lambrecht Cock. 2nd Club Billy Watkins with Blue Cock bred by Tony Cripps. 3rd Club was Geoff Barker with a Red Chequer Cock. Fourth Club was Billy Watkins with a Red Chequer Cock bred by Johnny Black of Stotfold. 5th Club was Steve Holloway with a Dark Chequer Van Reet Cock, with Billy Watkins taking 6th with a Dark Chequer Jos Thorne Cock.

That was our Old Bird Season over and done with, now the Young bird season was here.
