IHUNFC. Pembroke YB National by Francis Corcoran - 04-10-21

IHUNFC. Pembroke YB National.

The IHUNFC held their young bird national channel race from Pembroke on Saturday the 28th of August, convoyed by the Irish south road federation, as with all channel races this year, this race was to be yet another tough affair.

However, as with all events there will always be those gallant birds that are prepared to face up to the challenge, and with at least eighty miles of water to cross, it was a very brave bird that made it into Waterford city to the lofts of Joe Flynn, recording a velocity of 1174ypm, for first section "D" and First Open National.

The Blue hen, now named Joe's Girl is bred from parents, both of whom were bred by Blain McAvoy, Castlebellingham, the dam is a daughter of Mammies Girl who won the Kings cup for Blain, the sire is a grandson of Stiches x Mammies Girl, these are all of the old Soontjen lines that Blain and his dad have cultivated over the years. At this point Joe would like to thank Blain for supplying both parents to his most recent national winner Joe's Girl.

Showing what a great and fair National has to offer, the next bird timed and taking first section "A"  & Second Open National was clocked in Dublin to the loft of Martin Walsh, his timer on a velocity of 1165ypm, Martin also timed another arrival close up to finish 3rd sect, 7th Open. Here is what Martin had to say about his winner,

Hi Francis, The sire of this young hen is a double grandson from Johnny Whelans open winner from France. The dam was a gift pigeon from Thomas Maguire, it’s down from Jimmy Cullens French pigeons, this cock also bred 1st club in the old bird Pembroke race earlier this year, needless to say, I will be pairing these back together again next year. Thanks Martin. For those that follow Irish channel racing, you will obviously recognise the names mentioned above, as they are household names here in channel and distance racing into Ireland.

Next we have Peter Lucas who hails from the Bunclody area on the border of Carlow and Wexford, taking a very creditable 3rd Open position and also winning section "B" into the bargain, the sire of Peters pigeon was bred by Maurice o Donnell, the dam was bred by Brian Clayburn.

4th Open was won by Mr & Mrs Byrne, Dublin with their single entry, fantastic flying by them, congratulations.

In 5th Open and winning 1st section "C" it’s the Corcoran & Keegan partnership from Maganey, flying with the Barrow Valley RPC. Their timer is a nice little Blue W/f hen bred from a House of Aarden White Binnerman x Roland Janssen purchased from PBO Auctions.

6th Open, went to Pa Cullen from Enniscorty, in his first attempt at channel racing since his restart a couple of years back.

7th Open sees Martin Walsh back in with his second timer, whilst 8th Open fell to Joe Brennan of the Barrow Valley club in Carlow, Joe has had an absolutely fabulous years racing in his first year of retirement, so we can expect a lot more from him in the future

9th Open goes to Tom Gorman also from Carlow with 10th Open going to the partnership of Keegan & Darling of Dublin.

Well that’s it for channel racing for this year, it’s been tough, but quite enjoyable.

Hopefully, we'll all have a better season next year.
