IRISH NATIONAL FLYING CLUB

2011 PRIZE PRESENTATION

Once again the Stormont Hotel in Belfast provided the setting for the Annual Dinner Dance and Presentation of Prizes for the Irish National Flying Club. Last year we were greeted by a good fall of snow, which left driving conditions rather difficult but this year the weather was very kind to us as members and friends from right across Ireland gathered for this very special night.

Chairman Eugene Fitzgerald welcomed the special guest for the night, Ruth Rodgers, Editor of the Farming Life, a part of the News Letter, one of Northern Ireland’s leading morning newspapers. Eugene explained that Ruth was from a family of pigeon fanciers, the McBrides of Banbridge. Ruth, in thanking the Irish National Flying Club for the invitation, said she was privileged to be among the ‘Creme de la crème’ of the pigeon world. She added that two years ago she was approached about putting some pigeon results in the paper. She said that in journalistic terms they talk about stories having legs but this one had wings as the coverage for the pigeons has grown in those two years and this was matched by the sales of the News Letter on Wednesdays, the day the pigeon articles are published.

Eugene went on to introduce the top table: Secretary Trevor Topping, Treasurer Davy Mawhinney, liberator Davy Black and President Sid Collins and their wives. Eugene thanked Ronnie Johnston and his wife Alice for organising the event and for all the work they do in gathering the trophies in and preparing them for the night. Eugene had a special mention for Helen Marshall for all the work she does for the Flying Club’s Charity Committee. Eugene said that he was pleased to see a smattering of young fanciers among the prizewinners, which can only be good for the future of the sport. He went on to thank the liberators Davy Black, Tom Marshall and Willie Hore for providing us with excellent races in what were at times difficult weather conditions.

The Chairman paid tribute to the secretary Trevor Topping and his family for all their work throughout the year, and to the treasurer Davy Mawhinney who had now completed 25 years service with the Flying Club.

Before moving on the Presentation, Eugene congratulated all the winners throughout the year, and made a special mention of Dan Campbell on winning the Kings Cup and to Jackie Waring on winning a Gold Medal for a pigeon timed 4 times in the prizes in the Kings Cup. Four new trophies were presented to the INFC this year:

Mr G Delaney for 1st member in the section not winning the Open in the Skibbereen Old Bird National

Mr J Millar for 1st member in the section not winning the Open in the Friendship National

Mr B Ingle for 1st South Road Federation member in the Kings Cup

Mr T Ingle for 10th Open Yearling National

Mr Ronnie Johnston, Patron of the Irish National Flying Club, was then called upon to act as MC for the Presentation of Prizes. Ronnie provided us with a wealth of knowledge on the various winners and of the history of the prizes, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed as he kept the crowd engrossed through the presentation. As is customary with the Irish National Flying Club, the first prize to be presented was the Kings Cup by the previous year’s winner, Jim Martin of the Reilly & Martin partnership from Bray. This year’s winner Dan Campbell of Gilford was greeted with a standing ovation.
