Otterburn 1 YBs - 20/7/14

The weather was very changeable over the weekend, with extreme temperatures in the south of England which added up to thunderstorms and unpredictable conditions. The race marking was delayed for 24hrs with the birds’ welfare foremost in the minds of the committee. The liberation was delayed till 11am and in sunshine the 4,900 birds were away, clearing in one batch up through Northumberland in the North East of England back to Central Scotland. The usual time of flight is around the 1hr 50 to 2hrs but not this time. The birds really struggled with this flight and the winners were taking 2 hrs 20 minutes for the journey. The birds took all day and some the next to home with returns erratic. Well what was the problem this week - possible atmospheric pressure, "electricity in the air"? Who knows. The point is again the birds struggled to home from only 80 miles and that's not a good start to our season. Well done to Robert Clark of Dalzel club, this week’s Federation winner.
