Fealing The Heat

NIPA & AROUND

BY ADIE

FEELING THE HEAT

All the Northern Ireland based organisations suffered yet more liberation misery at the weekend, with all three heldover - the NIPA and EDC in Pilmore Beach and the Ulster Federation in Thurles. Having been in Dublin early on Saturday morning and travelling home about lunch-time, it was very evident by the darkening clouds and very low lying mist that Saturday just wasn’t for happening. As I progressed further North the visibility was somewhat better, as was the brightness, but it was a wise move to hold over by all three. Sunday saw a delay once again with the mist and haze taking some time to burn off, but it did eventually burn off enough for the liberations to take place with the East Down Combine liberating in Pilmore Beach at 11.45am in a light variable wind, followed at 12.45 with the Ulster Federation in Thurles and finally the NIPA liberating in Pilmore at 1.00pm. Although the haze hadn’t totally cleared and with a slight North/North East wind all liberators reported good clearings by all that were liberated. As I travelled around the Clubs on Sunday night it was evident just how good a day we had weather wise as it just wasn’t the haze that took a burning but some fanciers also. This week will see the first major race of the O/B campaign heading off on Thursday evening for the NIPA Rosscarbery O/B Inland National.

After a one day holdover the NIPA liberated at 1.00pm in Pilmore beach a distance of 215 miles to local flyers in Derry City. With the wind mainly from the east a difficult race was on the cards for the 75 members competing with 655 birds in the Federation. Making it back to back City of Derry Fed wins is the widowhood loft of Mr & Mrs Paul Maxwell. There is no doubt that "Picka" has mastered the art of widowhood racing and it will be no surprise if his results continue in the weeks ahead. This loft also takes 18th spot. 2nd and 15th positions go to Stephen Barker who will be well pleased with this performance .Tommy McDaid is in for 3rd & 20th with Kevin Payne also in the frame in for 4th. The ever present Anthony McCrudden of the Foyle takes 5th & 19th Fed.

The best bird in the local Mid Antrim area was timed by George and Ann Eagleson from the Grove Road at 5.36pm recording velocity 1379 for the 216 miles and winning 1st & 2nd in Broughshane & Dist. George lost a bit of time this week again, this hen racing Roundabout lost her mate and sat out 8 minutes previous and still won 3rd Club. She is a direct daughter of his good France Cock, a half sister of the lofts second bird. This one had 2 x 2nds last year including Skibbereen YB Nat and this year has been clocked every week winning 2 x 2nd, 1 x 4th, 1 x 5th Club etc. Both the birds are bred from the late W J Workman stock, a bird purchased at his Entire Clearance Sale for £12. Although this race bird is a hen George has named her Willie John, I like your style George. Surgenor Bros stay at the top in Kells & Dist and R Service & Son take 1st Club in Harryville HPS. It was a close finish in Ballymena & Dist with W & J Smyth just ahead of Richmond Bros and Gary Gibson has 1st Cullybackey HPS.

Some local information now regarding the arrangements for the first big race of the year the OB Inland Nat to be flown from Rosscarbery on Sat 17th May. Cullybackey will be open between 8.30pm and 9.30pm Wednesday for collection of club entries etc, race marking is in Cullybackey Centre on Thursday 15th May between 4.00pm and 6.30pm. EAST DOWN COMBINE NEWS

This week seen the East Down Combine in Pilmore Beach and with the weather in the North of Ireland something similar to what you would expect on the beach, unfortunately the South was much blacker and with low lying mist it was decided to hold over on Saturday, with Sunday looking better, but not by much.

As Sunday morning approached, the low lying mist that had caused the problems the previous day was still lingering about but with an North Easterly wind and brighter and stronger sunshine, the combine new that come lunch - time their was a very good possibility that the strong sun would burn up most of the low lying mist and haze, looking at some fanciers on Sunday evening also the sun played its part with them, all in all worth holding them over with most lofts reporting 100% returns.
