NIPA & AROUND

BY ADIE

GLEN & JOHNNY DO IT AGAIN

With another week ahead of very difficult weather conditions the NIPA made the decision to move everything forward by one day, the bird’s race marked on Tuesday early morning and hoping to release at St Malo in France on Thursday. The plans soon had additional problems when the French Government placed restrictions due to a Bird Flu problem in Germany. A number of release sites were closed and one of those was St Malo, NIPA Secretary was to quickly put in place Lamballe from where we have raced previously as a replacement. Next big problem was the weather condition’s, Thursday was good in France and reasonable on the route if the birds could avoid the heavy showers which were moving out of Ireland to be across parts of England and Wales by the afternoon. Although the weather was much better over the route for Friday it was thought a release would not be possible in France, the next few days were totally hopeless. The alternative was to wait, maybe for ever on a better forecast, just one week earlier the Ulster Fed birds were unable to release in St Malo and were returned back into Ireland. The race turned out far from perfect, some 180 birds recorded in three days. The hope was I suppose that with the second day so good a large number of birds not able to make home on the day would be clocked from early on the second day, this did not happen, the birds were not handy.

Glenn & Johnny of G Buckley & Son of Annaghmore HPS holding their two arrivails from Lamballe. The partnership win the Open for the 3rd time in four years (A record at that).

Looking at the situation overall the race was probably as good, if that is the word, as many other races we have held from France, I have recently published the list of all the previous winners going back to 1946 and the vast majority of those look to have been very hard and difficult events with a lot of winning velocities under 900ypm. The winning birds made good time from Lamballe following the liberation on Thursday June 28 at 6.30am with the winner timed in the Portadown area at 6.21pm recording velocity 1107. Glen Buckley & Son from Annaghmore win 1st Open NIPA in the Premier OB Nat for the record third time in just four seasons, such fantastic racing. Adie made an early morning call on Sunday and his report will be published shortly with the result. G Buckley & Son have won 1st Open NIPA Lamballe in 2004 vel 1313, 1st Open NIPA Portland in 2005 vel 1217 and now 1st Open NIPA Lamballe in 2007 vel 1107.

The NIPA Section A West had Alan Hall of Omagh & Dist winning 1st Sect doing velocity 784 and finishing 50th Open NIPA. Alan's pigeon is a Blue Bar cock of Davy Strains Van Wanroy blood lines. This 03 bird won 1st Section & 9th Open NIPA from Portland, he was raced from St Malo last year and was came home just out of race time. This year he won 1st Section & 85th Open NIPA from the 1st Talbenny and was in the clock from Roscrea with another Section position the following week. He was sent to Lamballe and was timed on the second day to be 1st Sect & 50th Open with a velocity of 784, Alan also timed another bird on the second day after 10.00am, this hen is a Kenyon of C & L Woodside (Ballyclare). He missed the bronze diploma last year but will qualify this time, well done Alan Hall who has won a record number of 1st Section in the NIPA.

Only a handful of arrivals were recorded in the local Cullybackey Centre, four birds on the day, five on the second day and a further four on the third and final day of the race. The best bird locally was timed by Alan Darragh of Cullybackey who had six birds competing and recorded three arrivals for a fantastic result. He timed his good Ch Pied cock that was bred by George Barr of Ballymena at 7.55pm to record velocity 1029 for the 471 miles to the Fenaghy Road, Galgorm. In the opening two races this good cock won 6th Club Mullingar and then the next week 4th Club Tullamore. From Clonmel he scored 1st Club, 2nd Combine, 5th Sect & 24th Open NIPA with 28,928 birds competing doing velocity 1742. Better was still to come when the loft had two early birds in the Talbenny (2) and he was timed to win 2nd Club, 2nd Combine, 2nd Sect & 2nd Open NIPA with 8,300 birds competing doing velocity 1333. This same bird has 1st Club for the second season from the OB Nat and for the second year takes the runner-up place in both Mid Antrim Combine and the NIPA Sect B. Last season he was beat into top spot by Davy Houston & Son from Broughshane & Dist and in 2007 is beat by Houston Bros of Randalstown who were best in the Muckamore Centre doing velocity 1038. The Cheq Pied cock is a fantastic racer and has won from all distances, very consistent and not many birds can score from all points through to France. Having been placed for the last two years he will qualify for the NIPA Bronze Diploma. The next night almost at the same time he timed his Champion Betty’s Girl to win the Gold Diploma and Gold Medal, this bird has been placed four times. Very few lofts have qualified for the French Gold Medal & Diploma award, Alan Darragh has now won two. Blue cock Golden Dreams was his first winner, placed in 1998 – 2nd Sect B & 10th Open NIPA Dinard, 1999 – 16th Sect B & 96th Open NIPA St Malo, 2000 – 4th Sect B & 27th Open NIPA Sartilly, 2001 – 12th Sect B & 74th Open NIPA Lamballe. A different race point for each year of performance and the new winner Blue Pied hen Betty’s Girl has scored from three different points. 2004 – 24th Sect B & 133rd Open NIPA Lamballe, 2005 – 189th Open NIPA Portland, 2006 – 9th Sect B & 102nd Open NIPA St Malo, 2007 – Lamballe to list.

Alan Darragh from Cullybackey had the top local bird from Lamballe in France, his Cheq Pied cock bred by Ballymena fancier George Barr wins the Bronze Diploma.

On the other arrivals on the day Ballymena & District had a photo finish with two lofts recording arrivals at 9.45pm, George Barr just beat Martin Graham into the clock. George has won this big race from France many times in the Ballymena & Dist HPS, Martin just a few seasons back had 1st Combine & Sect and 2nd Open NIPA from Lamballe. George timed a Blue Ch Pied cock two year old sent sitting, it had five inland races and the hard Talbenny (1) before France. Both the sire and dam have won from France, the sire Dordin x Van Der Espt was purchased at Blackpool as a youngster and the dam has all the top Kellens, Frans Van Wildemeersch and Decroix bloodlines of B Fletcher & Son.

George Barr won the Ballymena & Dist HPS in a photo finish, his winner was timed at 9.45pm flying 470 miles. George has won the French Cup many times.

Martin Graham is building up a good family of distance birds and looks forward to the cross channel racing. His two year old Cheq hen was bred from a cock obtained from J Waring of Lisburn this from a Red cock that had flown the Kings Cup twice and the dam was from Norman Thompson, a daughter of the Broken Wing Hen. The hen had one inland race and the bad Talbenny (1) followed by one training toss and into France. Hid father in law Denis Craig is a very good hand around the loft and takes the birds for any necessary training. The final bird recorded late on the first day was to Jimmy Letters and his grandson Calvin who scored 1st Harryville HPS with a bird that had already won prizes in two Talbenny races, including the hard one. This bird contains all the top lines from B Herbinson & Son of Cullybackey.

Martin Graham had the runner-up place in Ballymena & Dist in a photo finish clocking on the day at 9.45pm. Just a few seasons back from Lamballe the loft won 1st Comb, 1st Sect & 2nd Open NIPA.

The ever consistent Houston Bros Alan and Bobby had the top bird in the Muckamore Centre to record the lofts best ever position from the French National. Over the years Houston Bros who race close to the Ramble Inn on the main Antrim to Ballymena line have had a lot of success, many times 1st Club in Randalstown HPS, they have topped Sect B many times and earlier this year from Pilmore Beach won 1st Combine & 1st Section. They don’t keep a lot of written records, just many memories, on at least one occasion from Tramore in 1999 they have won 1st & 2nd Open NIPA. Their three year old Blue cock racing on widowhood had all the inland races and Talbenny (2) before France, he was timed in the Yearling Nat and has previously won 1st Club. Bloodlines were Van Den Bosche obtained from Tommy Cotter who has supplied the loft with a lot of top stock over the years and distance lines from Robin Duddy and Stephen Bell. Although the loft never time in on a Sunday, they had all four birds home in the recent Yearling Nat and no doubt some of those may well turn up in future seasons.

Houston Bros from Randalstown had the top bird in the Muckamore Centre from Lamballe in France and win 1st Club, 1st Mid Antrim Combine and 1st NIPA Section B.

Ernie Thom kept the flag flying for the Chimney Corner HPS timing on the day at 8.05pm, this bird will be very well placed. Ernie races stock bred by his dad Vernon who still fly’s a good bird in Cookstown and timed in again from Lamballe, his old stock is mainly Cattrysse and Jan Aarden. His favourite hen missed the race after breaking a leg but should be fit for the future, the winner this year had Talbenny (1) and was then trained private from Balbriggan. In Randalstown J McNeill & Son had a bird home late on the day at 10.15pm and Stewart Bros were on the third morning at 8.15am.

Just one single bird on the day in the Coleraine Centre, I think they sent 14 crates and four of those belonged to the clubs in the City of Derry. Alfie Strawbridge has a fantastic recent record in this race his 2 year old cock was timed at 8.36pm and records velocity 1023 for the 492 miles into Coleraine. Alfie had 1st Coleraine Premier in the race from St Malo last year and his winner in 2007 was bred from a daughter of his OB Derby winner from a few seasons back paired with a bird from Nevin Bros who have one of the best distance lofts in the North West. Diamond Bros from the Coleraine Premier timed on the second day at 12.20pm to record velocity 594 for the almost 493 miles and following that four arrivals for Ballymoney HPS with Danny Laverty 1st Club at 13.10pm doing velocity 568 followed by Willie Blair, John McConaghie who had 1st Dervock, and Steven Laverty.
