TOP SPEEDS RECORDED FROM TULLAMORE

The NIPA experienced one of its quickest flying days in recent old bird seasons at the weekend from Tullamore with the winners homing in at speeds of over 70 miles per hour, obviously helped by the fresh South West wind that the birds were released in at 11.30 am.

I was able to get away from work for a couple of hours and was present at the lofts of P & J Boal to see the early arrivals. Philip and Joe got two early arrivals together losing about 1 minute on trapping but as the afternoon went on it wasn’t a bad trap in comparison to how the others trapped, I did notice that the birds were extremely high up and over the course of the afternoon I seen many batches of pigeons having been released in a South wind were finding themselves heading home in a head wind having over shot their perspective runways.

I had the pleasure of speaking to a few fanciers who visited the restaurant on Saturday night with the overwhelming story from most being bad traps. Section D this week looks to have gone to Myles Taylor of Glenavy & District who timed his yearling Black Pied Cock at 13.03pm flying 111 miles. Myles has only been racing pigeons for six years and has started the season with 11 widowhood cocks. This will be his first time in reaching the summit of Section D flying to his Benson Road home on the North side of Lisburn City.

A fast race was had, with the winners doing velocities over 2000ypm.

First bird into Larne and looking good to top the NIPA East Antrim Section C was Bowen & Currell who timed a three year old Chequer cock, taking all Pools, Nom and DTW. As a young bird it was 2nd Club from Talbenny and 3rd Club Mallow, it has won prize money in every race flown. For two years he was put in the stock loft, but Davy noticed a real buzz in the cock when he was let out to exercise and the decision was made to train him up and race him again. The parents of this bird have bred Bowen & Currell three first prize winners to date. Runner-up was taken by the ever consistent Marshall & Wilson, 3rd were Ferguson & Crawford and 4th R Mills & Son. A demonstration of the Bricon ETS Timing system has been arranged for Tuesday 1st May 2007. The team will arrive at Larne & Dist Clubrooms between 9.00pm and 9.30pm having earlier been in Ligoniel.   EAST COAST CHAMPIONSHIP CLUB Tullamore 41/948 – Marshall & Wilson 2087, R Mills & Son 2080, Marshall & Wilson 2071, D & J Armstrong & Son 2071, 2068, Arthurs & George 2066, B & L Dodds 2066, J McMaw 2066 ABCDE & NOM, M McMurtry 2065, J & A Rankin 2063, M & A Pearson 2057, T Creighton sons & Welch 2056, Grattan Bros 2056, R Francey 2055. Mid Antrim Combine Report

The second race like the first saw an increased entry over the season previous, some 500 birds more this time in Mid Antrim Combine compared by the entry in the corresponding race of 2006. Overall winner remains in the same club Harryville HPS, last season it was Roy Clements who topped the MAC and this year it’s Allen McBride who is best from Tullamore. The convoy was released at 11.30am in a helping south west wind and a fast race was expected. The McBride loft wins for the second week getting away to a very good start, he timed his yearling Blue cock at 13.17hrs and records velocity 2061 for the almost 126 miles. He was paired to another cock and sitting on the nest, the sire was a distance cock paired to a Berghmans hen from Keith Kernohan and the dam was Soontjen all the best Frank Sheader lines purchased at the Joe Brown Clearance Sale. Keith himself was runner-up doing velocity 2023 and he was also runner-up in the same race last year. Charlie Young timed a very early bird to take 1st Ahoghill (2037), Surgenor Bros had 1st, 2nd & 3rd Kells & Dist (2036), Joe Devlin was 1st Ballymena & Dist (2034), George Connolly had a good card and 1st Broughshane & Dist (2029) and Alan Darragh returned to top spot in Cullybackey HPS (2028). Other local winners included Houston Bros 1st & 2nd Randalstown (2020), Raymond McFall & Son 1st New Antrim (1985) for the second week, and J & D Surgenor have 1st & 2nd Rasharkin & Dist (1934). Not just so early this week having topped MAC the week previous with a lot of early birds.

ULSTER FEDERATION REPORT

Joe Flood writes that the Ulster Federation were back in Kildare for the second race of the old bird season flown on Saturday 21st April, the liberation was at 10.15am in a fresh southerly wind. The birds made light work of the 105 odd mile fly into Belfast with most of the club winners exceeding 2100ypm. With most of the results available it looks like the Lagan Valley RPC in Lisburn will take the top honours for the second race on the trot, R & A Gore had a super card and the winner records velocity 2135. Into Belfast for the runner-up A & A Ferran of the Grosvenor records velocity 2131, a very close finish. The training programme must be working Tony. Third Open a loft always near the top of the sheet Joe & David Braniff of the Wheatfield record velocity 2119. The boys have the top six in the club, a super performance good shooting lads. J McErlean of the Alexandra is 4th Open, another loft with a top card and a second arrival 7th Open. Back into Lisburn to Lagan Valley for 5th Open to Smyth & Adams who have started well, Fancier of the Year recently. Paddy O’Neill and son Michael of Grosvenor are well placed on 2110 and looking down the results I see Healy Bros of Fortfield make it two wins on the trot. Great racing when you consider the boys are only racing six widowhood cocks, that’s how to do it! Other lofts with the top two in their club include Rab Fear of South Belfast, big John Jackson of Andersonstown and T Mawhinney of West Belfast. Congratulations to all this weeks winners, any news contact me by Tel: (90) 225999 or Fax: (90) 200848.
