Fermoy was the penultimate race of the NIPA young bird season, we started later than normal and all being well will finish at Skibbereen next weekend. The 5 Bird Championship was also in duplicate, and the total entry of just under 6,800 birds, were released at 9.30am am in a light North-easterly wind. The weather has picked up over the last few days and today we have sunshine and clear skies, with the odd shower forecast. It turned out a bit of a tester but no problem for Ron Williamson of Newry & District, topping the NIPA for an unprecedented 8th time in 2020.

The Wilton Cross Homing Pigeon Society which was formed in 1996 recently moved its clubrooms to the beautiful Meadows Equestrian Centre situated at Oxford Island on the shores of Lough Neagh. They had previously been on the premises of the I.N.F. in North Street, Lurgan but had to vacate when an extension was planned by the club. The pigeon club had spent 30 happy years there and would like to thank Gary and his committee for their hospitality and support over the years. New premises had to be found in a hurry prior to this season and after hard work by chairman Alan Larkin in securing the new location, the day finally arrived when James McCrory, pigeon fancier and haulier from Dromore set about moving the two huts to the present spacious location as can be seen in the photos .Sadly only three of the founder members are still racing in the club but several members have joined and next year the club will welcome one new starter and one fancier returning to the sport which is a promising sign. The members would like to express its gratitude to Mr. Hugh McCusker founder of M.E.C. for his kindness and generosity in allowing the members to join the community at M.E.C. As can be seen in the photographs the premises sit on 25 acres of beautiful countryside including an ornate lake with landscaped gardens including a cafe on site. This move to these premises should secure a promising future for the Wilton Cross HPS in what has been a very disappointing year for the pigeon fraternity due to the Covid 19 situation and the poor weather.
Wilton Cross HPS new premises on site at Oxford Island. Will be a pleasure here on a sunny day at Oxford Island in Lurgan.
Plenty of space for Wilton Cross members and visitors. Another view of the space at Oxford Island.

The full result for the YB 5 Bird from Fermoy can now be viewed in the main banner on NIPA Website, congratulations to J F McCabe & Son of Newry and District on winning the 5 Bird Championship. Many congratulations to the following three fanciers on winning the H Beattie & Son sponsored corn. Tom McClean Annaghmore 1216, Geoff Douglas Wilton Cross 1208 and G & S Smith Cookstown 1181
A young mealy cock came into me about 6 weeks ago, it had a phone number ring so I contacted the owner, John McCabe in Newry. I told him I would try get it up to him but due to weather it was in my loft for 2 weeks, I released it along with another stray and it made it back home safely. The lads put the bird back on the road the following week and it started to show some promise, yesterday the same Mealy won the Fermoy 5 Bird and finished 2nd Open NIPA, what a turnaround for a bird who was lost from Tullamore, just like to share with you all a good news story, not all strays are bad pigeons and if given a chance can make up for their mistakes. Big congratulations to John and Conor McCabe with their brilliant win yesterday. All the best, Dessie Rainey. Conor McCabe posted - A big thanks to Kevin and Kristopher Rooney for breeding us the 5 Bird 1st Open winner from Fermoy. Top class birds cheers lads, and a big thanks to Dessie Rainey for looking after him a few weeks back.
